Quick Quest

“Hurry, please, hurry!” Syd heard the call before she realized what it meant. Her reflexes kicked in, and she rushed forward, her arm raised. In her raised hand was a hammer. The blunt side was huge, and the back was wicked sharp.
She lowered the heavy thing, hitting a big ugly seal thing in the head before dogding away. The little girl who was calling out to her was crying, right under the seal-creature. Syd motioned at the little girl to move, and turned, hoping she got the message.
Syd ran as fast as she could, luring the seal-creature away. She heard it shout in frustration and knew she succeeded. She turned, feeling the creature behind her, and shoved the sharp end of the hammer into its head.
It fell to the ground dramatically, and burst to dust. Syd was breathing hard. Her arm grew tired, and she dropped the hammer numbly. Syd remembered the little girl and ran to her. The girl was huddled under a truck.
Huge, terrified tears trickled down her cute face. Her dark hair was a mess on her head. She blinked her big, brown, watery eyes at Syd and turned away a moment. Syd bent down. “Hi, sweetie. Can you tell me your name?” The girl looked back at Syd.
She sniffled and recomposed herself. “I’m Janie.” Syd smiled, exaggerating to make things seem better than they were. “My, what a pretty name. I’m Syd. How old are you, Janie?” Janie looked down at her hands, then held up four fingers. “Wow, four, huh? You sure act a lot older. You must be very brave. You did great.”
The little girl managed a smile. Syd held out her hand and helped Janie up. The little girl was much smaller than a normal four-year-old. Syd was, woah, ten years older than Janie. She held onto the young girls hand tight, and looked around.
The parking lot was almost completely empty, except for the truck Janie hid under and a few cars at the other end. There was a ramp leading to the next floor to their right, and a ramp around a bend to their left leading to the lowest floor, where the exit and entrance were.
Syd scrunched her eyebrows and frowned. She looked down at the red-eyed Janie. “Where are your parents?” Janie looked up at Syd and mirrored her frown. “I don’t have no- er, any parents. Mrs.Marka says I’m gonna get adopted soon, cause’ I’m kind.”
Syd looked down at the seal. When she met the creature, it was shrouded in the mist, making it look like an older buisness woman. Syd figured that that must have been Mrs.Marka, and she was trying to kill a young demigod.
Syd took a deep breath. They weren’t that far from Camp Half-Blood. If she could get to some water, maybe she could send an Iris-message? She doubted it, though. “Okay, Janie. Guess what? Your’e adopted now.”
Janie looked up at her, her brown eyes absolutely filled with wonder. Syd led her around the bend to their left, and down past the entrance gates to the parking structure. Once they were on the sidewalk, Syd looked around.
Trees, people, buildings, cars, pigeons, pollution. No water. No prisms. “Gah!” Janie looked up at Syd again. “What’s wrong, Syd?” “We need rainbows, or we could get hurt.” Janie looked around. She frowned.
Janie let go of Syds hand and stepped forward a few steps. She raised her small hands and out came a beautiful, clear rainbow. The girl didn’t seem surprised. She just casually conjured a rainbow. Mastery over light? Pfft, that was easy.
Syd let out a laugh. She thanked Janie and threw a drachma. The rainbow shimmered into an image of an old Satyr. “Oh, hey Syd. What’s going on?” Syd asked the old Satyr to bring someone to come get them.
No longer than an hour later, two pegasi flew over to where the two demigods stood. One pegasus was being ridden by a hermes kid. Christopher was his name, and he held the reins of the second pegasus.
He greeted them and got off, helping Syd get Janie up onto the great winged beast. Then, Syd got on and all three rode back to Camp Half-Blood.
