Murder in Family Decumius

Little History

They killed them. They really killed them.
Thought the young man as he ran through the courtyard dragging the girl. The rain was thundering, but the trees blocked most of it. Despite it being in the middle of a hot afternoon, it was cold and dark. They were both drenched.
After what seemed a long time, finally he found the low wall from where he and his companions broke in to carry on their dirty task.
The boy jumped and scrambled up, then he grabbed the girl, who didn't raise a voice, and brought her up, too.
He went and got the horses from behind the building. He sat on the black mare which he loved dearly. He seated the girl in front him.
She smelled of rose oil. It was sweet.
The boy pulled on the reins and they rode through the storm. He didn't stop until he reached the familiar house, which he knocked three times lightly and two times hard. The door opened.
He went inside, bringing the girl with him. They were both soaked.
The house wasn't as warm as the boy would have liked, but it was enough. The fire was doing it's job just fine. He turned as the dark haired old woman entered. She had a wrinkled face but her eyes shone as if she was still a child. Those eyes shone even more brightly when she saw the boy.
"Chariton!" she exclaimed as she hugged the boy. She stepped back and added
"Welcome home."
..................................................................................................................................................
It was the year 146 BC.
Rome had just won the Battle of Corinth, leading it to its conquest of Greece.
General Sulla and his army had already conquered most of Macedonia and were now heading towards Athens and the southern cities of Greece.
The Greeks, economically weakened, were easily beaten, conquered, and were now part of the Roman Empire.
Following these events, many Greeks (whoever had the means, of course) moved to the heart of the Roman Empire, Rome. These Greek migrants (who weren't rich) were put in the eastern part of the city where the streets were dirty and the conditions poor.
Some Greeks decided to earn a living. Some became what they used to be before the Romans took over Greece, such as blacksmith, merchant, ceramics, cooking, etc. Some even became servants to upper-middle class Romans. Some even became mercenaries and others participated in the games of the famous Coliseum... But others, due tothe poor conditions in which they were living and desperation, tried to find ways in making money fast.
There was only one option for such: the Black Market.
The Black Market, due to the fact that it traded stolen goods mostly and where secret contracts were made, there was a high demand for thieves and assassins.
Both of these 'professions' were highly paid down there. The payments depended on the job, the employer, and the employee (thief or assassin).
Many migrants of different countries (Greece, Egypt, Gaul, etc) would come to the Black Market and sell their services. Many were amateurs and were caught, but there was always a few that was never caught.
That few are the most notorious and dangerous band of men and, possibly, women. They've stolen the most precious gems, they've killed many men, and... no one knows who they are.
Which is why young Romans, be careful when you see a foreigner. You never know.

Notes

I'll get back to the story soon. Until then,
Be good, little Romans.
