Alexander Jackson; the Great

The Sword

The Hephaestus cabin is split into 2 areas; bunk beds in one, workbenches in the other. Smoke emanates from the work stations with a smell that makes me comfortable, like this is home for me.
“Is everyone here immune to fire?” I ask.
“Nah man, just us bros. Or, um, whatever we are…”
The next day I woke up to the smell of freshly lit matchsticks and solder – some of my favourite smells. Some of the people in my cabin have been up for hours, but its only 8am. Leo spots me in the chaos of the work areas and says good morning, but with vacant eyes I ask him where the food is.
“Breakfast ain’t for an hour yet, you can sleep or find something else to do if you like.”
I figure I’ll stay with Leo because I don’t know many others and I’m meant to be learning from him today. He leads me over to a workstation –by far the most complex – and shows me what he’s working on.
“It’s a mechanical sword, for you to use. Top of the line”
Leo gives me a smug look, like he knows just how awesome he is.
“It’s not quite finished yet.” He says, “We have to figure out your fourth Godly parent first. Here, check this out!”
He hands me the sword, and although it looks completed, he assures me it’s not. I run my fingers over the bronze hilt, and over the owl engraved into the base of the blade. The blade is made of many pieces of Celestial Bronze, but I can feel something special about this blade. I can feel the blade hum with intelligence - another Hephaestus trait.
“Hold it tight at the hilt. With both hands.” He says. I do as he says and the blade hums louder, sensing my presence.
“Think about fire.” Leo says, and as I concentrate on my hands and on fire my hands glow red-hot, and the blade starts steaming, the edge turning white-hot.
“Awesome!” We say in agreement, and as I concentrate more, my hands and the blade burst into flames. Everyone in the room is fascinated by my sword, and so am I. Leo has really out done himself.
At my command, the blade and my hand stop burning, and almost instantly it cools down back to room temperature.
“That’s not all it can do.” Leo says.
“Seriously!? It can do more?”
“Yeah man; just think about water instead.”
I focus on the blade, holding it steady and thinking about the ocean. The sword hums and swirls and slowly it cools down. The sword turns blue, not a bright blue but an ocean blue, and then in an instant, the hilt climbs up the blade as two smaller blades rise out of it. It locks into place and I realise that the sword had just turned into a trident.
“That’s incredible!” I shout, as Leo nods in agreement.
“I call it Shapeshifter.”
“Awesome, thanks man!”
“No problem! Wanna go outside and see what else it can do?” Leo asks.
I jump at the chance to use my new sword, and Leo takes me to the arena so he can show me it’s other features.

The sword is more amazing than I originally thought possible, Leo has thought of everything. It’s as if he knows exactly what I like in a weapon and how I fight. He even included some extra things I would never had thought of. After all, we are related. We look identical; the same curly hair except mine’s black. We have the same build, same skin tone, but my eyes are stormy blue compared to his dark brown eyes.
“The sword is part mechanical and part magical, so some of the features are technically impossible, but are actually magic. I even had the Hectate kids put a few charms on it for you. Throw it. Anywhere.” He says.
“Okay then.” I respond, and throw my sword to the far end of the arena. “What now?”
“Hold out your hand.”
I hold my hand out and my sword, that is at least 20 metres away from me, starts to rattle, and before I knew it it was flying through the air and into my hand. My eyes widened. I was actually so amazed and impressed with this sword.
“This is by far the most amazing thing I’ve ever had.” I tell him.
“Tell me about. I might just make another one for myself!”
And with that, the horn sounded for breakfast.
