Deadly Relations
Anger
Dinner was awkward.
Jax sat and made googly eyes at Katie while almost the whole camp stared at Percy. By that time the whole camp had heard that Percy was back. The one-time great hero had returned.
Finally, Chiron stomped his hoof on the table he was standing by. “Demigods! I hope you found dinner to your satisfaction.”
The campers cheered as their response.
“Now we have a camper among us who quite frankly is extremely important to this camp. Please give a warm welcome to Son of Poseidon, Percy Jackson!”
Percy gave a small wave as the campers cheered and clapped and then he shot a glare at Chiron who just waved in response. He could feel Jax’s eyes on him.
“Down to business. As you all know another small group of Titans have risen to challenge the Gods. Now Aether has been providing supplies and help to battle the latest wave of attacks. Our outpost in the swamplands in Florida has come under heavy attacks lately and the demigods that are holding it are having trouble. I have asked Aether to send more troops and supplies to help them but he can spare nothing at this time. His battle with the Titans in the North is calling for all his reserves.” Chiron paced to his left. “I was reluctant to do this but I need a team of demigods to go and help. Who will led them?”
Nobody moved. Percy knew he would have to do it. He stood up.
“I’ll do it Chiron.”
“No way!” A voice called. Percy sighed. The voice belonged to Jax.
“He’s been back at camp for what? A few hours? And he’s already taking over everything again.” Jax yelled standing up. “I’ll lead it.”
Percy turned and looked at him, “Have I done something to you?”
Jax sneered, “No, but I don’t like your attitude. You think you own this camp.”
“Now Jax, this isn’t a time for this. We can settle this another time.” Chiron said trying to defuse the situation.
“No, it’s a perfect time.” Jax drew his sword out of nowhere. He pointed it at Percy. “Fight me Percy. Let’s see who is the better fighter.”
Percy shook his head, “I’m not fighting you. There is no point. You can lead the team.”
Percy began to walk off.
Jax called after him, “You’re scared then. That’s what has cost you to lose everything. Your camp, your friends, even Annabeth.”
Percy froze. Anger burned inside him. Jax had taken it too far.
Percy reached into his pocket and pulled out Riptide. He uncapped it and it grew into his sword.
The campers near him got up and moved away.
Percy turned and faced Jax.
Jax sneered, “Now this is what I have been waiting for.”
He charged.
Percy charged to meet him.
