Daughter of a Curse

Last Day

“Guy’s remember, even though it’s the last day of the school year, and you think that this class was basically useless, please remember the gods and goddesses, and all of the basic terms. You never know, they might come in handy some day.” The final bell rang right as Mr. Suez finished, and that was the last of my sophomore year. I hurriedly got all of my things so I could get out of my Greek history class as soon as I could. As I gathered the last of my things, I ended up dropping everything I had.

“Need some help Ambrosia?” I looked up to see a face I knew very well. My best friend, Calissa. She bent down and helped pick up my books for me.

Calissa has been my best friend ever since the third grade. Her hair is blonde. She has long bangs that are parted to the side, and her hair goes slightly passed her shoulders. Her eyes are the color of a brilliant emerald. She has a few freckles from cheek to cheek and over her nose. She is 5ft 6 and thin. She has a nice golden tan. Her eyebrows are neat and perfect, without doing anything to them and her eyelashes are naturally long and thick.

She enjoys going to the beach. She said she loved the beach so much because of all of the shells and because of the ocean. She is very girly, and is obsessed with men and dating. I would sometimes describe her as vain, since she always needs to adjust something. She is very nice, and sweet, and gentile. Her favorite plants are myrtles and roses and her favorite animals are swans and dolphins.

I on the other hand, have auburn hair. My hair is long and somewhat curly. My eyes are grey, but everyone says they are silver. Someone once said they shine like a full moon in a black night sky, but don’t know about that… I am fairly tall for my age. I am 5ft 10 1/2. I am strong, compared to most girls as well. I have a tan as well, but it’s not very golden.

I am very athletic and agile. I usually never get the chance, but when I do, I always love to shoot an arrow with a well-built bow. I love being outside, and going into the woods. Just seeing all of the animals wandering around at night gives me great joy. For some reason, I love it when all you see in the sky is a crescent moon and maybe a few clouds. I really don’t like men that much. I mean, I can be with them and all, but I do NOT want to be in a relationship at all. My favorite plant would be the cypress tree. Honestly, I love all animals, but if I had to pick one, it would be the graceful deer.

As we finished picking up my books off of the filthy floor, we rushed towards the door.
As I just placed my first foot out of the door, Mr. Suez called out “Goodbye Artemis and Aphrodite.” He then snickered to himself.

Since he teaches Greek history/language he loves mythology. For most of his students, he nicknamed them after Gods and Goddesses. In Mr. Suez’s mind, I am like Artemis and Calissa is like Aphrodite. Also, both of our names are from Greek origin, so I guess that also encourages the fact that we are like Greek Goddesses.

“Bye Mr. Suez, hope to see you next year!” I replied in the happiest voice I could. My name, Ambrosia, is a food eaten by gods. It can supposedly make you immortal if you eat it. And Calissa’s name means ‘most beautiful’, so that definitely supports the fact that she is like Aphrodite.

We both rushed out the door and out of the school grounds, trying to avoid any more delays that could keep us at this awful school any longer.

“Callie, baby! Hey, want me to drive you home tonight?” I sighed very heavily.

Well, I sighed for two reasons. The first reason was because the person who was talking, Brian, was Calissa’s boyfriend. I don’t hate everyone that she dates, but this one is awful. He is self-centered, vain, obnoxious, a jerk, and has cheated on girls before. I honestly don’t know why she likes him. Guys are just… blah.

The second reason why I sighed was because I wanted to walk home. I love walking because the quickest way back is a nice, quiet, path through the forest.

Calissa must’ve noticed that I sighed, so she looked at me with sad eyes and said, “Oh please! We walk home almost every day A!” I nodded and said ‘okay’.

Also, Callie and Cal are Calissa’s nicknames. A, Ambs or Rosie are mine. I followed behind as Brian and Cal talked and talked. We finally got to Brian’s car, and immediately regretted saying ‘okay’ to driving back instead of walking.

Brian’s car was a slightly beat up, red truck. In the back, there were some dents and some places where the paint was chipping. On the windshield, there was a big scratch right down the middle. Inside, the seats were old leather, and you could see the foam inside. There was trash everywhere and it smelled like dirty socks. Cal stopped once she saw his awful truck.

I smirked to my self and thought ‘I knew we should’ve walked’. I know it was immature but I had to. Callie hesitated as she slowly opened the passenger side door. I went to open the backseat door but I couldn’t find it. There were only two doors, the driver’s and the passenger’s.

“Oh, well, I guess you can’t ride with us, sorry, Alexandra,” Brian replied snottily.

“Ambrosia, my name is Ambrosia,” I corrected.

Cal happily hopped out of the old truck and ran towards us. She came up right next to me and grabbed my arm.

“I’m sorry Brian, but if A can’t come with us, than I’m not going either.” I was surprised; usually Cal would do anything to be with her current boyfriend. Then, an obvious thought ran through my head. She hated his old red truck, and she decided that she would not ride in it.

“Well fine!” Brian blurted out.

He pulled Cal over and asked her something. I could only here a few things like ‘tomorrow’ or ‘can she’ and ‘I’ll ask’.

A minute or so later, Cal came over and said “Brian would like to know if you would like to go out camping tomorrow morning? Well, he asked me, but I said that you would like to go to, because you like being outside and stuff. A few of his friends were going as well. I would really like you to go myself, so, what do you say?” She was obviously really excited because she spoke so quickly, I could barely understand what she was saying

I managed to make out the basic point she was trying to get across. Brian asked her to go camping with him and his friends. She wanted to invite me because she’s my best friend.
“I’m not sure, I’ll think about it,’ I said. I didn’t want to give a definite yes or no because I needed to evaluate the pros and cons first.

“Well, whatever. We’ll come over, and if you want to go, you’ll be packed and ready,” Brian said in an annoyed tone. Cal said bye to Brian and we started our way back home.

Six minutes later, we departed from the forest.

“Now that a nice walk, wasn’t it Cal?”

I always love walking through the forest. Just seeing the wildlife I their natural habitat makes me smile.

“I think I stepped in some deer poop,” Callie said as she passed the last of the trees.

“Wait, you saw a deer and didn’t tell me?” She just glared at me, most likely because I didn’t show any sympathy for her about stepping in poo.

After a few more minutes of walking, we arrived to where I lived, The Orphanage. Yes, I am an orphan. I was supposedly left on these steps. Mrs. Maitland, the owner of the orphanage, said she heard the doorbell rang. She rushed to the door and answered it, to see a deer running away. The deer stopped, looked back, and then looked up at the night sky. Mrs. Maitland also looked up and saw a beautiful, bright, crescent moon.

Mrs. Maitland says I’m very special, but I think she says it to all of the other children. Mrs. Maitland is very nice. She is in her mid-twenties, and is very pretty. Her Hair is very poufy on top, and very frizzy. Her eyes are a dark, chocolate brown. She seems to always where either long pants or a long skirt.

Cal and me parted ways. She lives with her dad, Freddy Perkins, in a nice sized apartment.
I walked into the large building and was greeted by a bunch of little creatures. By creatures, I mean the other children in the orphanage. Everyone else is younger than me. Everyone else that was my age or older all left. Even Delia.

Delia was like a sister to me, she always liked to shoot arrows with me, and she was very good as well. She had eyes that were a very bright blue. She had a few freckles that ran from check to check. Her hair was a dirty blonde and very long. She was a little shorter than me, but she was very pretty. She always cared for the little ones if they got hurt for any reason. She was like the doctor in the house.

After I greeted everyone, I asked Mrs. Maitland if I could go camping tomorrow. She was unsure about it at first, but I finally convinced her. I ran up to my room, which was crowded with little people, everywhere. I shooed them away and sat on my bed. I made a mental list of pros and cons for going on the trip.

The pros were that I could go in the woods, hang out with Cal, and maybe practice my hunting skill. The cons were that there would be a bunch of guys there, Cal will be obsessed with Brian, and I might be alone… I decided that the pros overpowered the cons. I packed up all the supplies I believed I needed and went to bed.
