Daughter of a Curse

Hiking, Ugh

I had a very strange dream that night. I don’t even know where the idea of the dream even came from. I dreamt that there was a forest, but the forest had two parts to it. The left side of the forest was covered in a thick blanket of darkness, including he sky. There were a bunch of stars in the sky, everyone twinkling and shining so elegantly. In the smack center of the sky, there was a beautiful crescent illuminating the night sky. On the right side of the forest, it was light and sunny. The entire right side looked like it was glowing with sunshine. The sun looked as if it was hovering over the forest.

At the border where night and day meet, there were two animals on each side, looking at each other. The one on the left side was a deer. The deer was very elegant and graceful with every step it took, but it was very agile as well. On the other side, there was a wolf. Similar to the way the deer moved. His coat was light, almost blonde, and glowed in the sun.

Next to the deer, a small baby fawn came up to the deer. The fawn looked and acted just like the older deer. The relationship of the two seemed to be mother and child. As the wolf saw the young fawn, his face drooped, as if he was sad.

There was a rumbling sound, like rocks rolling down a mountain. All three animals looked up at the night sky to see the starts moving. They were all moving to the same place. Once all of the stars stopped moving, they revealed one massive star. A loud, ear-piercing noise came from the sky and a beam of light shot from the huge star in the sky. The beam shot the wolf and instantly, he disappeared. There was no dust, no smoke, and no remains at all. He simply, vanished.

I immediately shot up from my bed, panting. I looked around the room, looking for signs of the deer, the fawn, or the wolf, but found nothing. I realized that it was just a dream. I pulled the covers off of my legs and stood up.

I walked over to my dresser and picked out an appropriate outfit for camping. I had jeans that were warm but not to hot. They weren’t so tight that it was uncomfortable to run and climb, but they could keep my body heat in. I had a belt to keep them up as well, just incase something might pull on them. They were a light, worn-out-looking blue. My top was a shirt, made for hiking. It was a turtleneck that was a dark, purplish violet color. I also brought a bag that was good for camping.

A loud horn came from outside, I assumed it was Brian in his awful red truck, so I finished getting ready. I said bye to Mrs. Maitland and the tiny, little aliens that are always running around. As I got outside, I saw the red truck along with a few other cars. Callie was in Brian’s truck, looking miserable.

“Rosie, you decided to come! I’m so glad,” Cal said very excitedly. “I don’t know what I would’ve done if you didn’t come,” She whispered the last part so only my ears could hear.

Brian directed me to a black jeep, with huge tires. There was a girl in the passenger seat. She had pitch-black hair, with jagged bangs and an uneven back. Her ears had several piercings, along with her nose and lip. Her entire outfit was black with chains on them. She looked miserable as well. The person driving was Brian’s best friend, Bodhi. He has dark skin, black hair, and dark brown eyes. He shaves his head every few months so it’s either short, really short, or bald.

“Hey hot stuff, you riding with us?” He asked in his disgusting tone.

I just rolled my eyes and got in the back seat. Luckily, I had the entire back seat to myself so I can have a comfortable nap. Brian, in the lead, honked his horn, and started off to the campsite. But almost immediately I fell asleep, and the last thing I remembered was looking at the clock, reading 8:13.

I had the same, weird dream again. The night and daytime forest, the massive star, the deer and the wolf, and even the baby fawn. I honestly had no idea what it means or why I was having that weird dream. What felt like a few minutes later, I woke up. I instinctually looked at the clock and it read 12:18.

“Oh, look. The girl’s up,” I female’s voice said in a monotone tone. I assumed it was the girl that was in the passenger seat.

“Well, it seems someone had a nice slumber. Oh look, you woke up right on time, we have arrived,” Bodhi said.

I looked out the window and saw unfamiliar land, well, if we drove four hours I wouldn’t expect it to be very familiar. I opened the jeep’s door and took a step onto the road. All the cars were parked on the side of the road, with the passenger side facing a hill. Everyone seemed to get out at once, they all stretched, yawned, and clapped. I guess they clapped because they were happy they finally arrived, I would be but it felt like a minute to be since I napped the entire way.
I took my first breath of the fresh air, and it smelled like ocean air. We must be somewhere near the ocean. I saw Calissa get out of the truck. She yawned, stretched, and almost fell over before she noticed me. She quickly made her way over to me. She grabbed my arm kinda tightly and jumped up and down a few times.

“Isn’t this going to be awesome? Get to spend more time with Brian!” She said excitedly, as if spending four hours in the car with him wasn’t enough.

“Well, this might be fun for you, but I’m not sure what I’m gonna do,” I said in a fake sad voice.

“Well, you can hang out with me and Brian if you want,” She replied.

I pretended to gag at the thought of hanging out with Brian. Guys don’t gross me out, they just
annoy me.

“Alright guys! It’s going to be a half hour walk before we get to our campsite,” Brian announced.

I heard a few people whine and sigh, I guess they didn’t expect to walk on a camping trip. Who would’ve thought?

I but my backpack on my back and realized how heavy it was. I regretted packing so much things, most of them were completely useless. In my bag, I had enough clothes for a week even though this was only for a weekend, a lighter, matches, paper incase we needed a fire starter, and a kitchen knife I snuck out of the house. I also brought sun block, a sleeping bag, a First-Aid kit, a sewing kit, sunglasses, and a pair of shorts. Along with, a hat, hair spray to help start a fire since it’s flammable, a blanket, scissors, a sweater, a raincoat, a mini umbrella, batteries, and last but not least, a flashlight. If only I realized how much I didn’t need before we left.
Callie walked with me for the first ten minutes of the walk. I was actually relieved when she went of to talk to Brian because all she talked about was Brian and makeup. After awhile, it get’s really annoying and boring. I was fine by myself, honestly. I would linger behind the other people and observe the wildlife.

As I was observing a porcupine, I noticed another creature a few yards in front of me. It just so happened to be a deer, my favorite animal. The deer didn’t look like a normal, everyday deer that crosses the street and makes you slam the breaks on. No, this deer was much, much better than those deer. This deer was larger than most deer, taller and wider. His coat was shiny and beautiful, and every step he took was not only graceful, but prideful as well.
But, what really caught my eye were his hooves and antlers. They were very shiny and beautiful. They looked as if they were made out of bronze or brass. I knew they couldn’t have been, but it looked just as if they were. They deer stopped in his tracks and slowly turned his head in my direction. I was already in awe by its beauty, and the fact that he looked at me, directly at me, stunned me.

I decided to not act as if I was in shock and to calm my self since animals are usually calmer if you are. I took a few steps toward the phenomenal deer and stopped to see what he would do. I didn’t want to sprint up to it and startle it away, because it would be very disappointing if I did. The deer took a single step back as a response. I decided to take less steps even slower. The deer was now a few feet away and didn’t budge. I made a courageous move and reached out my arm to try and touch him. Shockingly, the deer walked up to me and bent his neck so my hand was touching it.

For a few seconds, I was surprised and didn’t move. I finally moved my hand in a petting motion and realized he was surprisingly soft. I couldn’t believe what was taking place. I am petting a wild deer with bronze hooves and antlers. I’m sure this doesn’t happen very often. I thought to myself. I was with the deer for what I though was as least twenty minutes.

I heard a voice up ahead call out, “Rosie, hurry up!”. I looked toward the voice and saw Callie gesturing for me to come.

“Okay, I’ll be there in a sec,” I yelled back. I looked to the deer, sad that I had to say goodbye. He seemed to bow down to me, like he knew what was going on.

“Bye beautiful, I hope to see you again,” I quietly said the him. Again, as if he knew what was happening, he nodded in agreement. He then turned around and sprinted away. Before I caught up to Callie, I stood there in amazement, processing what had just been happening. I ran up to Callie and the other campers and continued walking.

“So, why were you so far behind?” Callie asked curiously. I didn’t want to tell her exactly what happened because who knew what she would do? Laugh at me because she though I was crazy or tell the others and maybe they would try to capture it and sell it. But, I didn’t want to lie to her since she was my best friend, even though she was very different from me. I decided to tell her part of the truth, not everything, but not a complete lie.

“I found a deer,” I simply said. I knew I could’ve said more, but she was very curious and would’ve wanted more if I gave her some info.

“Cool,” she replied.

After another ten minutes of walking and tripping, we arrived at our campsite. It was a large, empty field, covered in wild flowers, long grass, and various rocks, poking out of the earth. It was completely surrounded by many trees of all kinds, blocking us from the thick, dark forest. Not very far away, you could here the sound of moving water, moving downhill. The faraway sound of birds loudly squawking and beautifully tweeting their own type of music. The field seemed large enough to hold far more campers than we have.

I took a deep breath of the fresh, open air. The scent of sweet flowers filled my nose. It was strong, so my nose tingled afterwards. I inhaled and the oxygen filled my lungs, then I exhaled and everything unwanted left my body. I felt alive, free, peaceful, and happy all at the same time. This is my new favorite place. I thought to myself.

My peace was interrupted my several teenagers screaming and yelling annoying and obnoxious words and sounds. This place was meant for people like me that enjoy Mother Nature’s gift of the beautiful world, and take care of it. Not people that yell and whoop and disrupt the natural environment that only see places like this as potential camping spots and that’s it.

I looked around to see what everyone else was doing. Some of them had collapsed on the ground, exhausted from the hike, while others had already started to set up sleeping bags and tents. Nowhere did I see anyone taking in this beautiful scenery. Oh, well.

I started to take out my things, searching for my sleeping bag, when I cut my right hand on the scissors. I guess I forgot to put them somewhere in a bag or a separate section, not loose and dangerous. I carefully took them out and placed them on the ground next to me, out of harms way.

I reached in and grabbed the First-Aid kit I packed. I grabbed a wipe and cleaned the cut. It stung a little but I kept on cleaning it. I reached for the gauze and wrapped it around my hand a few times. I used my left hand and jaggedly cut the gauze with the scissors. I would’ve done it neater, but my left hand isn’t as coordinated as my right.

I put the scissors in their own pocket, and I also did the same with the First-Aid, just incase I needed it again. Before I could take out my sleeping bag, Callie walked, more like bounced, her way over to me.

“Hey want to sha- whoa, you hurt yourself already?” She asked.

“Yes, thanks to my awful packing,” I replied angrily. I was mad at myself for my carless placement of the scissors.

“What were you saying before you cut yourself off?” I asked while getting up from the ground.
“Well, I was going to ask you if you wanted to share a tent with me?” She asked sweetly. I was going to have a nice slumber underneath the night sky. I then slapped a mosquito that was trying to suck the blood from my arm. I noticed that bugs were everywhere, and I was just lucky to have not gotten bit yet. I decided that it would be better to skip the whole night sky thing, than to have thirty or so awfully itchy bites all over my body.

“Sure, but I won’t be much help setting it up,” I lifted up my hand, showing her my injury.

“That’s fine! I got the boys to set it up for us!” She looked over her shoulder to see something. I looked too and saw a good-sized, pink tent, already set up. I assumed that’s where we were going to be sleeping.

We both cared our things to the tent and put them inside. We helped set each other’s sleeping bags up and things that would be good to have out, just in case. I asked someone the time and they said it was already 2:15. For the rest of the day, we didn’t do much. Some people were smart and brought food that we all shared. We all went to bed early because we were all tire from the walk.

The girls changed into their sleeping clothes in a private area. After I was all ready, I unzipped my sleeping bag and crawled in, and Calissa did the same.

“Good night Rosie,” Callie yawned. She was definitely very tired.

“Good night Callie,” I replied, before I fell asleep.
