The Demigod Games

Chapter 29

Percy:
When we see the fire, Annabeth and I begin to run.
We flee into the forest, leaping over logs and crashing through bushes and shrubbery.
I hear a cannon. Then another.
I choke on the smoke as I run with Annabeth.
"Percy....can't....go...on...." Annabeth wheezes. She stumbles through a bush, falling.
"Yes you can. You have to." I groan as I catch her. I pull her upright and she starts to run again, breathing harshly with effort.
I hear another cannon and I start to run faster. The fire already killed 3 tributes. What was going to stop it from killing us?
"Come on Wise-Girl, keep moving." I cough out.
Annabeth's cries out, crading her arm, thorns impaled in her bicep. Her legs give out and the fire is moving up behind us. I scoop her in my arms and continue running. My muscles of my legs begin to cramp and I am slowing down. The fire only gets faster. I trip over a tree root and I fall.
I tumble down a hill with Annabeth who is still unconcious. My head collides with a boulder, and the last thing I remember before everything going black, is the one breath of fresh air that filled my lungs.

Annabeth:
I wake up, hacking my lungs out. My eyes slowly focus, and the first thing I notice, is that it is slowly getting darker. My head is pounding and I am still dizzy.
Suddenly I snap to attention. "Percy." I whisper looking around. I don't see him anywhere, and I am starting to panic.
"Percy!" I yell, not caring if anybody hears me. I hear no response, and that makes me frantic. "Percy! Seaweed Brain ANSWER ME!!" I scream.
I see a dark object by a tree and hope surges through me. I run over, and sure enough, it is Percy. But he isn't moving. I take his face in my hands, and notice the back of his head is covered in sticky blood. His blood.
I start to tremble. I grab his hand, trying to check for a pulse, but my hands are shaking so much, I can't tell. Instead I lower my head to his chest, and try to listen for his heartbeat. I hear nothing, and I am about to give up hope.
But then I hear a faint thumping. I try to check his pulse again and I can feel it. It is very, very faint, but it is still there.
I shake him slightly. "Percy, please wake up. Please." I beg.
There is no response, and I start to cry.
"Please Seaweed Brain." I sob. I brush away his black hair from his face. I softly press my lips to his. Suddenly his green eyes open, looking disoriented.
"Percy!" I scream hugging him.
"Wise-girl." He says letting out a soft laugh.
"I thought you were dead." I whispered.
"I'm obviously not. Unless both of us are, and we are reliving the games as our punishment in Tartarus." He says.
I recoil as if slapped. "How dare you." I hiss.
Percy reaches towards me, but I pull away, eyes flashing. "Don't." I warn.
"Wise-girl, I'm so sorry." He whispers looking down.
"Don't mention that damned place again." I say, jaw clenched.
"I won't. I think I've received more than a few knocks on the head." Percy says.
I remain motionless as I close my eyes, the horrifying images and experiences of my time in the deepest pits of hell. I feel a single tear roll down my cheek as I stifle a sob.
"Oh Wise-Girl. Please don't cry." Percy says, voice thick with emotion.
"Why the are we stuck in here? Haven't we received enough pain and misery in our life? For the love of Gods, we have been to hell and back. Not even the Gods have done that." I cry. Percy pulls me in for a hug, kissing my forehead. "Thought you had left me."
"Of course not. We are staying together." He promised. "You're not getting away from me. Never again."

Notes
