Youth
01.
The grounds were cold.
Nathan's bare feet quivered out of the sheer sense of emotion. Nathan didn't know where he was, but he did know he was dreaming. He had learned how to check for Lucid dreams every now and then, and for him, it was only a matter of observing his surroundings.
He didn't know exactly where, but it looked like a place in the afterlife. Nathan didn't believe in any form of higher power. He never saw the religious things to be captivating or true. Glancing at the area, he noticed he was walking through an area with a red river grazing across. It was a river that he had read about in a book once before. The odyssy? He wondered.
Brushing the idea aside. He walking into a plazza of old Greco-Roman statues. They seemed to resemble disney characters from the movie Hercules. Trying to grasp everything, he caught a glimpse of a man in a long black cloak racing across the plazza.
"Wait!" Nathan cried, chasing after him. Racing through the Plazza and down towards the river, he collapsed. Rolling towards the river, he almost dove in to be saved by the cloaked mystery man.
"Who are you?" Nathan asked, wondering why the man saved him.
Concealing his face, the man nodded. "I'm a friend." He smiled or at least Nathan thought he did. "Try not to touch the waters of this land, they are deadly to you even in dreams."
In a shimmer of light, everything froze and shattered. In a gasp, Nathan opened his eyes. Disappointed, he rose. "Damn." He sighed. "I had the same dream again, and it ends at the same exact-"
Before, he could finish a knock was at the door. Opening stood a woman in her mid thirties. She had her hair down and curly. Olivia was that kind of mother that, you could never hold a serious face with, which helped Nathan with his sense of humor.
"Nate, honey, you'll be late to school if you don't get ready." She smiled.
Nodding, Nathan tossed aside his dream and put it in the to-do file in his mind.
After getting dressed, he headed down for breakfeast. He had a fried egg and cheese omeleat, a stack of his mom's famous blueberry pancakes and a man's favorite side dish, beacon. Midway into his pancakes, he decided to share some info about his own problems.
"Mom?" He hesitated. "Did you ever have weird dreams as a kid, like about you standing in a plazza of ancient Greek and Roman statues?"
Glancing at him, his mother made that childish, anime character look, as if she were trying to think really hard. "Come to think of it, I haven't." She replied thoughtfully. "I don't remember much of my dreams. Sometimes it kinda feels like I just pass out and then wake up. What happens in between can be a bit of a mystery!" She laughed.
"Oh." I replied even more confused. "Did my father ever have weird dreams and tell you about it?" I asked hoping she'd say something important.
"No, but he was always aspiring that his family got along one day. That no body would shunn another, and that his sister would stop brewing up trouble." She replied. "I never got much of it, but he never seemed to tell a lie. I loved so, I didn't ask questions."
Tired, he took a piece of beacon and decided to finish his food in silence. When he finished, his mom, decided to give him a hug a kiss on the forehead and send him off for his last day of school.
