When MYTHS Become Real

Nico

I was in the med tent sitting by one of the many occupied beds. Percy, Annabeth, Tyson, and Grover were there too but I didn't even pay them. I was too focused on Naida unconscious for the second time today. Before she'd been exhausted from using too much power so the Apollo healers knew she'd be fine. The same couldn't be said after being stabbed in the chest.
It had all happened to fast to protect her and I hated myself for that. One second she was kissing me just like she used to over the summer and the next her beautiful green eyes were wide with pain. I looked down in time to see the Celestial bronze blade get yanked out of her chest. She'd gasped collapsed into me. For one horrible moment I believed she was already dead but the painful sound that escaped her lips proved otherwise. Satisfied that she still had a chance, I turned my attention to her assailant.
The man that stood behind her looked extra-crispy and the rusted armor he wore didn't help his look. Little tufts of his soot-covered hair appeared a light brown but it was hard to tell from all the burns. His gold eyes were the only things I could really focus on through the ash. The guy's chapped lips pulled up into a smirk and he said, "Regards from Mnemosyne."
I raised my black Stygian iron sword to strike but he vanished in a puff of smoke before I had the satisfaction of doing any damage. In fact, all of the monsters just vanished. It wasn't like before when they fell back right before I'd gone to get Naida from the Underworld. They were simply gone.
I waited for only a second to see if they would return before scooping up Naida and rushing her back to the safety of camp and into the medical cabin. She wasn't the only one hurt so the Apollo healers were already swamped by the time I carried her in. But she was the worst off so it only took seconds for them to get her situated in her own little room and say they'd do everything they could. That was over two hours ago.
"Why doesn't sister wake up?" Tyson sobbed.
Percy patted his shoulder. "It's okay, big guy. I'm sure Basics Naida is fine. Just let her rest and she'll be up making sarcastic remarks in no time."
"Oh please can it finally be no time?"
Percy didn’t say anything to that. He’d already tried getting her to the ocean so the water could start to heal her but it hadn’t helped. I saw his face when Naida just continued to lay motionless. He was almost as worried as I was.
I jumped when Annabeth put her hand on my shoulder. She gave me a soft smile saying, "You look tired. You should probably get some sleep, too. We'll let you know if anything changes."
Over the last few hours she and everybody else had completely recovered their memories and she was back to being the mother hen of the group.
"I'm fine. I don't want to leave her alone."
"We'll stay with her. There's not much you can do for her now. Just sleep so you can be your best when she comes to, when she really needs you."
"No," I replied.
I don't know what she heard in my voice, it sounded lifeless to me, but she nodded without putting up any more of a fight. She shot me a sad smile before going back to sit with Percy. She put her hand on his shoulder comfortingly and then we all waited in silence for another twenty minutes, which felt like a lifetime.
Naida let out a soft groan and my head snapped up toward her. Her finger twitched slightly on the blanket before her whole face flinched in pain and both hands curled into fists. She released a whimpering sigh and her eyelids slowly fluttered open.
“Ugh. What happened? Why does everything hurt so much?”
I slipped my hand into hers and squeezed it lightly. Her gorgeous green eyes slid over to me and I gave her as reassuring a smile as I could manage. “Because you’re alive,” I answered.
Her lips twitched in the slightest smile before I turned into a wince. “I guess that has to count for something. But are you going to answer my question?”
I swallowed back the lump in my throat. I didn’t want to tell her, didn’t want to relive that moment and my failure to protect her. “Ixion stabbed you and I’m pretty sure the blade was cursed because you haven’t been healing, even from water.”
“Ixion? Wasn’t he just in the Underworld?”
“Yeah. But I’m thinking Mnemosyne got him out before you killed her. He said that he did it for her. Naida, I’m so sorry about what happened.”
She shrugged, just a tiny lift of her shoulders. “Don’t worry about it. So what happens now?”
There was a clomping of hooves sounded right before Chriron entered Naida’s private room. “Well, I’m glad to see that you are awake. After everything that’s happened, the gods have called a council meeting to discuss Mnemosyne’s plot. They have invited the camp.
“Invited the camp?” Percy asked. “To Mount Olympus?”
“Yes, exactly. Naida, are you up for it? The quest, after all, was yours.”
She blinked slowly and started to carefully lift herself up. I jumped into action and helped her so that she was sitting straight up. “Sure, sounds cool.”
I stared at her for a moment. That was it? No objection or sarcastic remark? Something wasn’t quite right here.
