Two Bodies, One Soul

Dark Dreams

Beth

Beth slept restessly in the cabin she wove from light. He dreamt she was in Connecticut, 8 years old. The day she left.

"You worthless brat!" He screamed after her as she ran up the stairs to hide in her closet. He was in a drunk rage- it was happening more and more often. She lived in fear of him, hiding so he couldn't get hold of her again. She rubbed her arm which still hurt from him breaking it. She couldn't get any help. She lived too far away from anyone. Beth was just very lucky she healed quickly and the bruises had mostly faded.
"Come out here you good-for-nothing whelp!" He roared, throwing open the closet doors and dragging her down the stairs by her arm.
She cried out as she banged against the hard wooden stairs and she tried to gain her footing. Her dad's vice grip on her arm was too tight and she resigned herself to the bruises she would inevitably have the next day.
He tossed her against the the wall and began to pound her with his fists and kick her. She curled up in a ball and silently took the beating.
When her dad got bored and walked away, she waited until he was long gone, on his tractor and uncurled from her ball, checking herself over for major injuries. Her arm was broken again, as were some of her ribs. She eased herself off the floor and staggered up the stairs.
She made a sling for her arm and tossed some clothes and the book her mum left for her in a bag. The book was of greek mythology.
'Please Artemis,' She prayed to the goddess of maidens, 'Help me. If you're real then help me!'
She ran off down the dirt road, wincing at every step. She was never going back. Ever.

Her dream changed. It was two days later, May 27th, her 9th birthday. She was camped in a cornfield, slowly starving as the moon rose higher in the sky.
There was a rustling in the tall maize behind her. She picked up a sharp rock she had found and faced the source of the noise. A tall girl of about 12 stared back at her.
"Thalia, over here!" The girl called out. Her light blonde hair and silver outfit shining in the moonlight.
Beth hefted her rock. "Wh- who are you?" She stuttered.
The older girl smiled, "I'm Acacia, Artemis sent me and my friend, Thalia, to find you. We're to take you to safety."
"Artemis?" Beth asked.
"Acacia, take it slow." The face of an even older girl appeared amongst the corn, "First let's get you fixed up and then we'll explain more."

The dream jumped to only a week ago, the day she'd woken up alone only to read a note left by Thalia. 'Sorry we couldn't stay longer but moon and day don't mix. Swim for the beach and you'll be safe.'
Then the sea monster appeared.

Beth awoke, breathing heavily. Alone in her cabin that shimmered around her as the sun began it's daily ascent.

Notes

Beth was never invited to join the hunter's.
