Two Bodies, One Soul

Blame Game

Delia

The morning of the chariot race Delia woke up early to make sure Kat wouldn't do anything rash. When deciding on a Camp Half-Blood team, Nic had volunteered, sending Kat into a fit of rage. But her rage just got worse when he was voted the best option to defend the chariot while a girl from the Demeter cabin named Bunny Summers drove.

They stood in the crowd as the two teams prepared to race.
'Why are you letting him do this?' Kat's voice sounded in her mind.
Delia studied her sister's face thoughtfully, her jaw was clenched and eyes hard, never faltering from glaring at Nic.
'Because he's a camper, because he's the best person for the job, because he has a right to defend his home as much as any of us do.' Delia answered back.
'He's not the best person for the job, he'll stuff up.' Kat retorted.
'Then the fates are not on his side. Give him a break, Kat.' Delia was almost pleading now.
'No. I gave him a chance and he blew it.'
'Don't you believe in second chances?'
'Yes,' Kat replied. 'I just don't believe everyone deserves them.'
On that note Kat strutted away intp the crowd to sulk.
Delia sighed and turned her attention to the race that was about to start.
Chiron barely had time to utter the word 'Go' before the horses took off around the track.
The Greeks took the lead, Percy's perfectly trained horses kicking up dust as they sped ahead. Nic aimed spears at the Roman's wheels but couldn't quite get in a clear shot, he threw them frantically, missing and missing again until he ran out. He began pressing buttons without any real strategy as the Roman's gained. He got lucky and emptied out some oil, turning around the pole and heading for the finish. He picked up a shield as the the Roman's began desperately emptying their chariot of weapons.
A loud 'crack' resounded as a spear stuck through Nic's shield, splitting it and digging into his arm. Nic cursed as he pulled out the spear, only to have another crack sound.
The wheel tumbled off the Greek chariot, knocked off with a spear. The well-trained horses stopped in their tracks as the Roman's passed the finish line to the Roman audiences cheers.
Delia and the rest of the Greeks just sort of stood there, shocked.
Kat could always be counted on to break the silence though, strutting onto the track towards Nic.
"What the hell was that?" Kat demanded of the injured boy, pushing him to the ground as he landed hard on the arm the spear had pierced.
'Kat...' Delia warned her sister, pushing through the crowd.
'Stay out of it!' Kat snapped before speaking out loud. "Were you purposefully trying to make us lose or something?"
"I-" Nic started before Delia finally reached her sister.
"Kat, leave him alone. Let's not point fingers." Delia placed a firm hand on Kat's shoulder.
"Oh, so now you're trying to defend him?" Kat growled, shooting her daggers with her eyes. "Did you not just see that? Did you not just see him completely flunk out when we needed him most?"
"Kat-" Delia started.
"No." Nic stopped her. "She's right, I failed. I- I'm sorry." He stumbled to his feet and walked dejectedly towards the Apollo medics.
Kat glared at him with pure hatred.
"Don't you see what this hating does to him?" Delia asked, shaking her head and walking away.

The next day there was no need to celebrate. The Roman's were too controlled to and the Greeks had lost, after all.
Delia walked past the Athena cabin on her rounds to check on the Javelin Throwing candidates for the next day.
"Lia!" A frantic voice called from the doorway. It was Carmine, one of the younger campers, and her face was streaked with tears.
"What's wrong?" Delia asked softly.
Carmine wordlessly held out a torn page of a notebook. It read;

Dear siblings,
I'm sorry I left so suddenly but I just can't being around her and disappointing her every day. I wish I could stay, I love you all, but I'm afraid that this is the last you've heard of Nicolas Hansen. I'm going far away and not coming back, because she's right, I'm a failure. I'm sorry for disappointing you all but at least you won't have
to live with the disappointment of being related to me any longer.
It's best for both of us if you just forget I was ever here. Forget that I lost for you. Forget that I failed.
I'm so sorry.
Love, Nic.

Delia was shocked, then she remembered her sister had done this. She handed back the paper and marched for the arena when she knew her sister would be.
"What did you just do?" She yelled, backing Kat against the stands of the arena. "Do you know that he left because of you? Do you know that you broke his heart and his spirit? You probably just signed his death warrant!" Tears were streaming down her face in angry rivers, but she didn't care.
"Who-" Kat began, obviously shocked to see her sister so worked up.
"Nic!" Delia screamed, people were staring. "Nic! You just made Nic leave camp! And he's not coming back! He's not coming back because of you! Because you broke him!"
Kat's eyes widened and tears began to flow. "I didn't mean to-"
"Oh didn't you?" Delia cut her off, "Because it seems to me that what ever you were doing worked pretty well! You got what you wanted, now he's out of you life forever."
Delia turned heel on her sister and somehow ended up crying by the canoe lake, but this time there was no Leo or Kat there to comfort her. She would have to be strong by herself, which was good, because she had just found that deep inside her was a core of iron, one that she hadn't known was there.
