The Sound of the River

I get Settled

Angela led me to an empty spot on the floor.
"Get settled" She suggested. "I'll go get you a sleeping bag"
I took of my backpack that I still had on from school and leaned up against it as I looked around at the others. They seemed so at home. Like they've been here all their lives. Meanwhile I was just sitting there like a loner, as usual. I was just hoping that it would be different here.
"Here you go" Angela laid out a light blue sleeping bag for me.
"Thanks" I said.
"Hey" She sat down next to me. "You don't believe all this yet, do you?"
"Not all of it. It's like...I know it's here, my brain just doesn't want to admit it's real" I replied.
"That's how we all started. Just give it time"
I nodded and fiddled with my necklace. The leather band/strap thingy had an old-fashioned key on it. On the side it had one word engraved in it; 'για πάντα', Greek for 'Forever'. According to my foster parents, my real parents gave it to me before they left me. I wore it everyday, I couldn't bear to loose it.
"Could I see that?" Angela asked, seeing me playing with the key.
I hesitated, remembering Hermes is also the god of thieves, but handed it to her with it still around my neck.
"Awesome" She grins. "Where'd you get it?"
"Umm...from my parents. Before they orphaned me" I replied.
"Oh...sorry" She said. "I didn't..."
"It's fine. I don't even remember them anyway. So, one of them is a god or goddess?"
Angela nodded. "Since you were able to get in. The border of camp has a sort of shield thing, blocking mortals and monsters from coming."

Someone blew a horn.
"Dinner time" Angela stood up.
The line to dinner went by seniority, so I was last. In front was Connor Stoll and his brother, who's name I forgot. Satyrs and nymphs gathered as well as campers. Each cabin had their own table. I sat down at the Hermes table.
"The cups fill with whatever you want" The guy next to me said. "Just talk to it"
I thought. "Dr. Pepper"
The cup filled with fizzy soda.
The nymphs served the food. There was barbecue, grapes, apples, strawberries, cheese, and warm bread.
I was about to take a bite when everyone stood up and went towards the fire. I followed.
Angela said into the fire, "Hermes" And pushed a portion of her food into the fire. When it was my turn, I did the same. I figured cause I was staying at the Hermes cabin for now to do that too.
Mr. D (Camp director, who I also found out was Dionysus) stood up to make announcements.
"The chariot races will take place this Saturday, capture the flag is later today, and just a reminder; no killing or maiming in either. You will be punished harshly" He sighed. "We have a new camper as well; Drea. Woo hoo, I guess. Eat up"

The "No killing or maiming" part got on my nerves. Capture the flag? The worst at my old school was getting nailed by a dodgeball. Although, I was starving, so I put all those thoughts in the back of my mind.
By the end of dinner, I met Brooklyn, who also wasn't claimed yet. It turns out we had a lot of things in common. We didn't have many friends, were really shy, zoned out all the time, etc. She'd been here a couple weeks, so she knew how capture the flag worked. Then she started telling me the rules.

I love the story. It seems really well written.
