The Wheel Of Time

Breakfast of Heros

White. Everything around me is white. And cold.

Snow. I'm surrounded by snow and ice. And fighting figures.

Everyone around me is fighting, in groups and pairs, All in full body armor, sword against sword, knife to knife. Little bombs explode in the snow setting off miniature Greek fires. The archers are shooting loaded arrows.

I look around, my eyes sweeping the landscape , until I lock onto a pair about twenty feet away from me.

One was definitely a girl, fighting with a sword, and she looked like she was winning. The other might have been a young boy; he was skilled with his sword, but not as strong as the girl.

As I watched, she struck the hilt of his sword, and twisted, throwing the weapon several feet away.

He swung back around, ready to fight hand to sword; but she pulled up her shield and knocked him to the ground. He scrambled from his back onto his knees, not ready to give up. He froze as she said something, but they were to far away for me to hear.

I watched as he pulled a dagger out, without her noticing. His motive was clear. But as he swung around, knife at the ready, she was pushed into the snow.
Suddenly there was a tall, blonde man standing in her place; with a knife in his chest.

I screamed.

My eyes flew open. I barely contained the scream that had ripped up my throat only moments before, in the dream.

I took a deep breath and turned off my alarm clock. I sat up shaking. I took another deep breath and stood, walking towards my bathroom. I showered slowly, and then got dressed. By the time I made it back to my closet, I was perfectly calm, and the dream was shut away.

I pulled the duffle bag back onto my bed, and began to put the last few things in it: My sword (sheathed of course), an extra pair of flip-flops (they break way too easily), and the wooden box I got on my birthday last summer.

I was still only guessing at who gave it to me. I knew I couldn't open it until he told me who he was; so I packed it up, knowing I would find out soon enough.

I zipped up the bag, grabbed my sandals, and headed to the stairs. I walked down them as slowly as I could. Even with the carpeting It was possible to wake Jack, and -as an ER doctor- he had probably gotten home either late last night, or really early that morning.

I set the bag and my shoes by the front door, and went into the kitchen. As I pulled out the bread to start on toast I saw a shadow fall over the window in the back door. The curtains were closed, so I could only see the silhouette, but a man was definitely trying to get in the back door.

I heard the door creak and the bolt unlock, so I pulled open the door and watched some guy fall onto the kitchen floor. With the extra momentum, he slid a couple of feet, effectively knocking his own head against the counter across the room.

"Ah! Holy Hades; what was-" he said and sat up. He was tall - I could see that while he was sitting down- with short jet-black hair. He looked up for a second and I caught the flash of sea-green eyes, and - oddly - a smile.

He looked up and locked eyes with me, still smiling. "You must be Lizzie." He said, almost laughing.

"Elizabeth." I said coldly. He was obviously a demigod. Once I really looked him over, I noticed the bronze dagger at his side.

"And who are you?" I asked him, still a couple of feet away from him.

"Percy. Percy Jackson. Good to meet you, finally. Seriously, David has been dogging me and Chiron for the past three years; trying to convince us to drag you to camp." He said still smiling.

I laughed knowing It was true, and held out my hand to help him up. He gladly took it and quickly stood. Too quickly.

"Whoa." He said and grabbed the edge of the counter nearest him.

"Sorry. You should probably sit down." I told him and motioned to the stools on the other side of the breakfast counter.

"Thanks." He said, holding his head in his hands.

"You want some breakfast? I was just getting started when-" I said, not sure how to word it.

"When I broke into your house?" He said and laughed. "I do technically have a key." He said, and set said key on the counter next to him.

"Um... Yeah." I started breaking eggs into a bowl, "So, have you come to drag me back to camp?" I asked, almost worried for the answer.

"No, only to try to convince you come. We only drag when followed by large monsters." He said. I wasn't watching him, but I detected the sound of a smile in his voice. I finished with the omelets, and set his down in front of him.

"This is great!" He said after only a few minutes.

"No kidding." I said and walked to the fridge as I swallowed. "You want something to drink? juice? milk?" I asked him.

"Juice if its not-" He started.

"It's no trouble." I said and poured us both a glass. As I gave Percy his glass, David walked into the kitchen.

"Percy." He said, surprise and worry coating his voice. I turned to get Davids eggs, taking the chance to hide my smile. If only he knew.

"So," I said turning back around, with his plate and glass in my hands, "When do you head off?" Percy must have seen the glint in my eyes, because he winked and continued to drink his juice. He still managed to answer before David did.

"In a few minutes. How does five sound?" he said turning his head towards David, while keeping his eyes on mine.

"Good." David and I both said at the same time. Davids eyes flashed to mine, excitement making them shine.

"You mean-?" He said, cutting off before I could jump in.

"I'm all packed." I said, and picked up Percy's and my empty plates. I finished rinsing the dishes and putting them in the dishwasher, when David walked up next to me.

"I only want you to be safe, even for only a couple of months." He said, meeting my eyes.

"I know." I said, and let him give me half a hug. "Come on. Lets get going." I closed the dishwasher.

"You aren't going to say good bye?" He asked, frozen by the sink.

"I did last night, and I am going to Iris Message them tonight after dinner. We don;t want to miss our boat." I said, smiling. I left the kitchen and walked down the hall, a mix of excitement and terror welling up inside me.

I was going to Camp Half-Blood.

@LCCabin3

All of the above, except not the something not great. And I have NOTHING to criticize. At. All. I LOVE reading this and cannot wait to read more!!!!!

@Frost Wrathbomber, could you elaborate a little on that? I love constructive criticism! But is that an "OMG, how could you?" or a "OMG what's gonna happen next?" or just an "OMG this is great/something not great!" ??????

thanks so much!
