The Ambassador of Athena

Chapter 18 - Next Stop: Monster

We rented a car at the Airport and headed towards South Dakota. Thankfully it had a navigation device so I just typed in Mount Rushmore and it told me where to drive.
I was the only one with a driver’s licence, so I had to do the driving. We followed the Interstate 25 North and continued on Highway 25, 26 and 18 till we reached the Black Hills. The landscape was amazing; huge forests on both sides of the street, every few miles a small village or a truck stop.
My company was not the best; they mostly were asleep on the backseats or staring out of the window. We just drove through a small tunnel and my eyes readjusted to the light when it happened:
Something with the strength of a bulldozer hit the car in the side and flipped us over. The world twisted upside down and all that could be heard was the sound of breaking glass and metal banging against the ground. When the car finally came to a rest on the hood we were dazed and had cuts all over our faces and hands. Johanna was the first to recover and unbuckle her belt. She climbed out of the car, her sword ready in her hand, but her reaction was not so confident: She screamed from the top of her lungs. I finally managed to unbuckle myself just to hit my head when falling down. I checked for Jessy, but he seemed fine and climbed out of the car, his javelin broken into pieces and completely useless. When I climbed out of the car and back on the street I saw what hit us and made Johanna scream. It was a bull, but not a regular one, this one was the size of a trailer, with beautiful white fur, silver horns and hooves and gleaming red eyes. It stood down the road, staring at us, pacing his hooves on the concrete.
“What the heck?” Jessy yelled and took a step backwards. I quickly activated my bow and pulled an arrow out of the quiver.
“I would tell you what monster that is, but Greek mythology is full of bulls.” I explained.
“That doesn’t help, just give me your sword, I’ll make steaks out of this beast.” Jessy said.
I handed him my sword silently, not complaining, but there was no time either. The bull stomped his hoof and charged, his horns at head height.
“Run!” I screamed and dived sideways, dropping my bow. From the corners of my eyes I could see Johanna also diving out of the way, but Jessy stood there, his sword pointed at the monster.
“Come on, let’s get over with this!” Jessy screamed at the bull, and for last words they were pretty impressive. The bull hit him with the side of his horn in the stomach and shot him into the forest next to the road. His screaming ended suddenly when he hit a tree with a horrible sound.
“Oh, crap.” I hissed and stood up, grabbing my bow. The bull needed a long way to stop, so I had time to target it with an arrow. The bull glared at me with his eyes and charged again. I shot the arrow, but its skin deflected.
There already was enough adrenaline pumping through my veins for more than one person, and I was so close to panicking I felt sick.
But I had to stand the ground against that monster, or we all would become bull food.
I just got out of the bulls’ way before I got flattened, but this time I had something like a plan.
“His eyeholes and nose should be vulnerable.” I screamed over the noise the bull made. “Aim for them if you get the chance.”
I pulled out the next arrow, this time it had a red tip, and I prayed to all gods that it was powerful enough to hurt it. I let it fly and jumped backwards so I could see if I hit it.
I did, and it was not something to describe. The only thing I will say here is that it had a rather… explosive effect.
The bull crashed to the ground, leaving a trench in the street, but it was still moving.
‘Wie kann das Vieh sich mit nur einem halben Kopf noch bewegen? ‘ I asked myself.
Sorry, that was German, I’ll translate it: ‘How can a beast with only half a head still be moving?’ If I am nervous I start thinking in German, even if I got used to think in English.
But the bull did. It was definitely not dead, no sign of crumbling to dust, just blood flowing on the ground, and a whole lot more was in splatters on me and Johanna who stood petrified next to the street, blankly staring at the bull in front of her.
“Finish him!” I yelled, but she still didn’t move.
I sighed and took another arrow and shot it at the wound, but the bull still didn’t crumbled to dust, and that was a problem. Thankfully it was too severely hurt to do anything, so I had time to go through all I could remember about bull monsters in mythology that were created for a purpose and could not be killed except for this purpose.
“Minos” I whispered and walked over to Johanna.
“Give me your sword.”
“What?”
“Just give me your god damn sword.”
She made no move, so I just pulled it out of her hand and went over to the bull.
I placed the blade at the throat of the beast and said:
“I sacrifice you to the god of the sea, Poseidon, as it was foretold millennia ago. May it be accepted.”
With that I slit the throat of the monster and for my relief it crumbled to dust, leaving behind a faint smell of the sea and salt.
“Oh, thank the gods.” I mumbled and fell to my knees. The rush of Adrenaline fell and I felt dizzy.
Johanna woke up from her paralysis and ran over to Jessy who still lay unconscious under the tree.
I went over to our car and looked that was to save. The car was completely crashed, pieces lying all over the grass. I pulled out our backpacks, thinking about the long long walking that laid ahead of us.
When I returned to the road the dust has been blown away by the wind, revealing a white leather bomber jacket. It was beautiful, with a blue trident stitched onto it and ‘CHB’ under it. Now that was a spoil of war I really liked, and I tried if it fit. It did, and despite that it was like a portable AC: It was cool despite the hot June sun burning down onto me.
I went over to Johanna and Jessy, and for my relief Jessy was conscious again. Johanna dripped Nectar into his mouth and handed him Ambrosia.
“How are you feeling?” I asked him, but he laughed sharply.
“Jeah, start bragging. I don’t believe her when she said you killed the monster. Mortals can’t do that. It’s impossible, only demigods can do such things.”
He jumped up, furiously glaring at me.
“This should be my victory, I should have killed the bull, and it should have been my spoils of war you are wearing.”
Normally I am not that short-tempered, but this time I exploded.
“Then why did you decided to face it heads on with no plan or clue what this beast was?”
I took a step towards him.
“This was the Minoan, or Marathonian Bull. It was created by Poseidon to be sacrificed, but King Minos decided not to, so Poseidon made the Bull crazy and Immortal, to rampage forever as a reminder not to upset the gods. The only way to kill it was to sacrifice it properly, and that’s what I did, not you. You were too stupid to think a second, so he hit you and you probably have severe internal bleedings or something like that.”
He glared at me, and before I could react he pulled out a dagger from under his shirt and stabbed me in the stomach.

Notes

Sorry it took me so long to post this chapter, but I lost the willing to write.
It is difficult to write down such a story, trying to think about everything and everyone, and even if I don't get bad comments, good ones are the fuel that keeps the engine running.
I have over 100 pages written full of Ideas and I am already thinking about more stories to write or spin-offs, but I want to share them with someone.
I see that a lot of people read my stories, and I am happy about everyone who reads it, but a comment is what makes me writing on.
Just tell me what you think, what I should change or improve, what you think will happen next or should happen. Share your thoughts with me, because I will respond, give you hints, maybe even include good ideas, and that is what I want: To write a story people read and talk about, even if only on this website. I want to interact with the people, and that is only possible if they ask questions, write comments or discuss about whats happening. I am not writing this story for me, I am writing it for you people.

That is all I have to say, but I cannot force you to do what I want, you have to be willing to do so.
And sorry for the cliffhanger, I felt the need to finish the chapter here ;)
