The Quest Returns

Silena's POV

When the Argo II’s sails poked their white heads over the tops of the horizon, the camper that had been instructed to watch for the ship blew his conch horn, signaling the entire Camp. Annabeth and I were sleeping at the time, and when we heard the noise, we both sprinted towards the dock. How did I know what Annabeth was doing? Well, I joined her in our race to the dock.

It was still pitch-black, and I had no idea what time it was. I thought that maybe the harpies that presided over the curfew hours would start chasing us, but I didn’t care. I had to see Charlie.

As Annabeth and I were running, I thought about Tommy yesterday, and how we had kind of completely ignored him when we had talked with Luke, and I felt bad about that. That boy deserved someone actually noticing him. And I can say that as a daughter of Aphrodite.

We kept running, and I told Annabeth of my dream. She accepted it with a touch of concern.

“I’ve been on a four-man quest before, you know,” she said between breaths, “remember the Labyrinth? That was Tyson, Grover, Percy and me. Four people can survive a quest.”

Then, she stopped abruptly, grabbing my arm.

“Silena, everything’s going to be okay. I know we both want to see our boyfriends, but let’s walk, eh? It’s makes talking easier.”

I nodded in agreement, but I could still fell myself shaking with worry.

“I know your four-man quest was destined to survive, Annabeth, but what about Charlie? What if he doesn’t come back? I saw him, Annabeth! He was withered up like pieces of decaying wood and rotten old newspaper! What if Charlie—if he’s—if…”

“Silena!” Annabeth snapped back at me, “don’t you think I’ve been worried too? Charlie’s not the only boy worth caring about on that boat!”

Then she realized I was crying, even before I did. The tears, silent in their endeavors, rolled down my cheeks as I stared blankly into the night.

“Whoa, whoa, Silena, it’s okay. Everything’s going to be fine. We just—we just need to calm down, okay?”

She grabbed my shoulders with surprising gentleness.

“Charlie’s going to be fine, and Percy’s going to be fine. Let’s think through this, okay?”

I was amazed at how her words seemed to calm me, as we started walking again towards the pier.

“Are you sure you can’t use charmspeak?” I asked.

“Words often calm people down. It gives them something to listen to,” Annabeth responded, “but let’s think this through. The number three was the main thing you saw in the dream, right?”

“Yeah,” I said as we got within half a mile of the pier, “and Charlie, rasping about ‘not being able to warn them’.”

“Well, we know three can have multiple meanings,” Annabeth said calmly.

“But what other meanings would it have in this situation?” I said, the panic rising in my voice.

Seven hundred yards from the pier.

“What if Charlie is the third person to redeem his soul from Kronos?” Annabeth suggested, but I still didn’t believe everything was okay.

“Why would Kronos send me a vision telling me that Charlie would succeed in redeeming his soul?”

“I—I…” Annabeth didn’t have an answer. Nice. The smartest girl at Camp, and she can’t think through a simple problem.

Six hundred yards from the pier.

We picked up the pace in silence, syncing our jogging pace together.

“Silena, calm down,” Annabeth tried to soothe, “He’ll be fine.”

Five hundred yards from the pier.

I started to go even faster, my heart beating out of my chest.

“Silena!” Annabeth shouted, trying to catch up to me. I was full-on sprinting now.

Four hundred yards to the pier.

I could see figures moving on the deck, trying to get off the ship. I sprinted faster, the tears running down my face.

Then, a sharp pain erupted from my shoulder. With a vice-like grip, Annabeth ripped me towards her.

“Listen to me!” She screamed, and I could see around us multiple cabin lights being turned on.
The whole Camp was waking up for this. I wondered where those curfew harpies were.

“You need to calm down! Kronos—”

I had no time to listen to her, so I did something crazy. I punched Annabeth Chase, one of my best friends in the entire world, straight in the face just to shut her up. I turned around and kept on sprinting.

Three hundred yards from the pier.

I saw two figures, one of which was Leo, climbing down a rope ladder. They were laughing, while I was going out of my mind. I sprinted faster again.

Two hundred yards to the pier.

Without meaning to, I heard the voice of Luke Castellan after he had turned, the voice that greeted me when I had informed for him during the Battle of Manhattan.

Go and see Charlie, Silena, go! He’ll be DYING to see you!

“No!” I wailed into the darkness. My heart rate was through the roof, and my eyes were darting everywhere, like a cornered animals. I felt light-headed, and I felt like I was going absolutely insane.

One hundred yards to the pier.

Then, a third figure emerged. But it wasn’t the boy I was looking for. It was Percy.

“NO!” I screamed, sinking to my knees. Charlie wasn’t there.

“Silena!” Leo said running to me as I pounded my fist into the ground. But I didn’t care. Charlie was gone. I couldn’t take it. I passed out, hyperventilating like a trapped rat.

Charlie was gone.
