Back to Mt. Tam

Charlie's POV

Thirty-six hours. That’s how long Ethan told us to wait. So we did. I sat on the porch of the Big House, Silena’s trmebling hand in mine as we both waited. Waited for the call.

We knew that eventually, one of the three that had gone to Mt. Tam was going to have to IM Nico so they could come home. However, Ethan had said that if they hadn’t called in thirty-six hours, we were to go to Mt. Tam anyways.

Needless to say, it had been thirty-six hours. I took one last look into my wife’s eyes, and I realized why her hands were trembling. She knew what I was about to do, and she knew that it would get me into more trouble. I knew I couldn’t keep anything back from her, so I said,

“Silena, I’m sorry. But this is for Alex. She will not be captured in vain. I have to help.”

She saw the pleading in my eyes and slowly stood up, keeping one hand on her stomach. She kissed me quickly and said,

“Go. But if you get yourself hurt, I swear, Charlie, I’m going to kill you.”

“Uh, yes ma’am,” I smiled. She giggled, and I kissed her cheek in farewell.

It didn’t take long for me to find Percy, seeing as he was walking up to me as I left the Big House. His entire face was redder than a tomato and he looked seriously spooked.

“What happened?” I asked, and he starte to laugh.

“You’re looking for Nico, right?” He asked. I nodded, and he giggled some more. “I found where they are. They’re in Cabin 13, and…well, things are getting steamy.”

“Oh, Gods,” I laughed, and Percy joined in, and soon we were doubled over. But then we both sighed and regained composure. We jogged towards Cabin 13, and just as we were about to knock on the door, we heard,

Right in the middle of a make-out session, Tommy. Wow. Okay, well then. Let me get ready for the jump. I might need to take some people to heal me when I get there because I haven’t had enough rest, but I should be fine. I’ll be there in—Tommy? Tommy? Gods damn it!”

“We need to move!” I heard Will say, and then we both heard cloths rustle, and belt buckles clink as they were hastily put back on. Percy grinned devilishly and planted himself flat against the Hades Cabin walls, hiding from sight. I mimicked his movements and as the doors flew open, Percy and I followed the happy couple as the walked briskly towards the Armory.

“Having fun, were you?” Percy asked, trying to hold in his laughter.

Both of them whipped around and their faces flushed.

“Percy!” Nico shouted, but then Will started laughing, putting his arms protectively around Nico.
“Yes, we were, Jackson. Nico does have a type, after all.”

I chuckled, remembering the moment that Piper had told me about the “not my type” comment Nico had made after the war with Gaea. It was Percy’s turn to be embarrassed, but then Nico said,

“Look, Tommy’s in deep schist. We need to move now. Meet back here with armor on in ten.”

So we ran, Percy and I getting our wishes granted of being included on this little jaunt out to Mt. Tam. As I was outing my armor on, I started replaying Nico’s facial expressions in my head. He was trying to look embarrassed, as anyone would who had just been discovered in an intimate moment.

But to me, it looked forced. Like Nico was trying too hard to look embarrassed, like he was hiding something. I hurried to put my armor on, and met with Nico at the central campfire. He looked afraid, something I wasn’t used to seeing for a long time.

I asked him, against my own will,

“Nico, do you know? Do you know whether Alex is still alive or not?”

He turned away from me, which confirmed it almost as much as if he had told me. My heart dropped into my shoes and I felt like crying. There was no reason to go now. But I picked up my head as I thought about Ethan, Tommy and Clarisse, and how Nico’s IM had been cut short for some reason.

They were in trouble.

Percy and Will joined us and we circled up, holding hands. Nico said,

“Deep breaths, and hold on!”

We all gasped in and closed our eyes shut. Nico squeezed my hand, and I opened my eyes.

What I saw was not pretty.

“Oh gods,” Will murmured.

A group of kids in armor were entangled in various stages of fighting. There was a group of about five kids in purple cloaks and golden armor, with short swords drawn. Tommy had his boot on top of one of the purple-cloaked-guy’s chest. The kid had blonde hair and icy blue eyes.

It looked like we had hit ‘pause’ on real life. No one was moving. No one seemed to notice us. Just as Percy and Will opened their eyes, the blonde guy said, in a very high-pitched voice,

“Romans, ATTACK!”

Tommy kicked the blonde in the face, a straight-up KO. Suddenly, there was a loud fwhoomph! above us, like a mix of paper ripping and gargantuan wings flapping. All four of us looked up to see a real-life dragon, getting ready to land.

Percy seemed to recognize the riders of the dragon, and possibly the dragon itself, for he ran towards them like he was about to help them out. The riders of the dragon slipped off, one of them obviously a leader, who looked kind of like Silena with her black hair, but she was much too warlike for my taste.

Percy kept moving towards the dragon, when I swear, it turned back into an Asian dude with Roman armor on and a bow and arrow. Percy and the now three new Romans ran towards the others, shouting at them to stop fighting. Will was attending to Nico, wwho had passed out from the long shadow-travel journey. I ran towards the fighters, but I stopped as Ethan drew his sword once more.

I could see in his eyes that his evil powers were back. Fear clenched up my throat as I thought about Silena, and about our child on the way. I didn’t want to get sliced up by that guy, especially if his powers were back.

I saw Tommy leap in front of him, trying to protect the blonde Roman, who had gotten up after getting knocked out and had been insulting Ethan and Clarisse. Then, Ethan, as if Tommy didn’t even exist, lept at the Roman. Tommy jumped in front of Ethan again, and took Ethan’s strike.

Blood poured from his chest, and Ethan’s eyes seemed to realize what had happened. He dropped his sword as the new Romans and Percy restrained the blonde kid’s cronies. Clarisse had gotten the blonde kid in a head lock, and was about to break his neck. The big Asian kid with the bow was aiming his bow, and just before he released, Percy shouted,

“Frank, NO! I can vouch for both of them, I swear!”

But it was too late. The kid released his arrow. Now it was my turn. To this day, I have no idea how I did it, but I drew my back up dagger and threw it. It flew through the air, and caught the tip of the arrow, sending it fluttering to the ground in a tail spin like a miniature helicopter.

I breathed a sigh of relief. But then my heart sank again as I looked at Tommy, his hand being held by Ethan desperately. It didn’t look good.
