I Get Kronos Cooties

Ethan's POV

We really needed to start avoiding the infirmary, Silena, Charlie, Tommy and I.

Unless Chiron wanted to let us personalize our own beds, we'd be bored out of our minds, but we would still have to be there for a long time, seeing how much we were getting injured. It was like we four attracted painful situations.

Tommy lay next to me, and seeing how pale and weak he looked, and how restless I had been for about the past hour or so, I decided to get up. Big mistake. Stupidly, I had decided to rise from my prison of a bed when nobody was around to catch me if I, for example, felt so dizzy when I got up that I almost passed out again, which happened.

My bare feet made contact on the cold, polished wood floor softly, sending a tingling sensation up my spine, raising the hairs on my body. I put my left foot down first, testing my weight even though my ankle wasn’t injured. Then, I placed my right foot down. I felt fine, leaning against the side of my bed with my feet touching the floorboards. So, I lifted myself off of the bed, stood freely for about half a second, and then all of the blood in my head rushed to my feet, making me feel as light-headed as a person who had inhaled Helium from a balloon. My legs wobbled, and I fell to my knees, remembering how cold my dream-vision had been, only hours earlier.

When I had passed out attacking Percy, I had fallen into a different place. I found myself sitting in the middle of an interrogation room, straight out of a TV show. I was sitting on a cracked and dirty plastic chair, like on you’d see at a public speaking assembly. In front of me was a heavy metal table, and straight ahead was a mirror, which I knew from watching NCIS was see-through.
I looked myself over, and realized I looked like crap.

My hair was messed up and dirty, my clothes, the same ones I had had on when I passed out, were tattered with holes and looked bloody, even though I wasn’t hurt. It looked like my eyepatch had been scratched, leaving a seam like an X across the faded leather.

I was about to walk up to the mirror and look a little closer, when two figures opened a metal door to my left and walked in.

When I saw them, my brain froze, my heart stopped, and my soul burned in anger. Walking in, in a white cotton t-shirt and white cotton drawstring pants, was Luke Castellan. He looked thin, weak even, compared how I had last seen him. Walking behind him, looking like an interrogator, was a figure I couldn’t recognize, so I focused back on Luke.

Luke’s blue eyes, yes, blue, I realized, were full of fear, defeat, and sadness. I had seen neither the blue color nor the fear in a very, very long time. He looked in my eyes, and the defeated look intensified, as he sighed,

“I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. I knew that even in Elysium, it wouldn’t be long before I ran into you two.”

The anger roared back into my ears.

“Look at you, Luke!” I shouted at him, “You got Elysium, perfection forever, I got Asphodel, and you’re sighing like you got a bad deal!? Get over yourself, man!”

“Don’t you realized who he is?” He sighed, like he didn’t care about what I had said, “Ethan, don’t you recognize him?”

I looked back up at the interrogator, who was standing at the head of the table, in between Luke and I, sitting across from across from each other. He had a regal complexion and facial structure, like a king’s. But, his eyes were gold and full of pure evil, an evil that was five thousand years old.

“Yes,” rasped the metallic laugh of Kronos, “Ethan, don’t you recognize your own master?”

“You!” I growled in fury, “What do you want with me? I already beat the crap out of Percy for you!”

“That was nothing,” assured Kronos, “trust me, boy, you are capable of so much more. Which is why I’ve brought Luke along for a little incentive. To ensure that I rise again, I’m going to make your life a little more…difficult. If you even try to redeem your soul within the month I have allowed you, your body will descend into a level of sickness the likes of which no mortal has ever experienced. And just think,” He said, smiling evilly as he put his hand on Luke’s shoulder, “if you don’t try to redeem your soul, Luke here will come back to life, in better health than he has ever been in, so it’s a…win-win situation.”

He grinned horribly, and I opened my mouth to scream at Kronos, but nothing came out. All of the sudden, I felt like someone had punched my in the stomach fifteen times in the space of a millisecond. I doubled over in pain, and when I opened my eyes, I was still on my knees in the infirmary.

I shot my arm out, bracing my weight against the bed for support. I reached for the bottle of water that was lying on my bedside table, and took a couple cautious sips. The cool liquid felt amazing running down my throat, and my vision cleared, the blood coming back to my brain.

The blood coming back to my head didn’t help, as I suddenly felt sick to my stomach. I found the nearest trash can and puked, blood rushing out of my mouth. I wasn’t vomiting, I was coughing up pure blood. Had Kronos actually punched me that many times? I stood up again, and this time didn’t feel as dizzy, only weak and frail.

“The villain walks!” said a voice at the door. My bed was in the back part of the infirmary, farthest from the door. I turned my head to see who had spoken, to find Leo Valdez at the door.

“What do you want?” I asked grumpily.

“Well, if you’re felling well enough,” Leo offered, “I would like to show you to your cabin. Cabin 16.”

We walked out into the summer sun, and I was temporarily blinded by the glare. My eyes adjusted, and I found Leo waiting about a hundred feet away from me. I looked around, not sure what or who I was looking for, but I didn’t seem to find anything. Maybe I was looking for Percy. It was like I was in a trance, sleepwalking. I realized with a start that I had been moving forward the entire time, and that Leo and I were now standing in front of Cabin 16.

“You’re not looking so good,” remarked Leo, sounding a little bit concerned, “Are you sure you’re good to leave sick bay?”

“I’m fine,” I muttered, “Just a bit woozy, thank you. Besides, why are you worrying about me? You yourself called me a villain. I kicked the crap out of your Camp leader, and you have other problems to worry about, like Charlie and the Hephaestus cabin.”

I breathed in, and my breath was a gasping wheeze. Talking for that long had really drained my lungs.

“All right, then,” Leo said skeptically, “get some rest okay?”

“No problem,” I mumbled.

I didn’t even have enough energy to notice details about the cabin, except for its color, deep purple. I slumped onto a bed and Leo left me alone to sleep. I started coughing a little, but then it turned into a full storm of coughs, and I covered my mouth with my hand. When I stopped, bringing my hand off of my mouth, it was covered in blood and mucus. My head felt like it weighed a million pounds, and my eyelids started to droop, so I decided not to worry about the coughing and try to get some more sleep.

My own cabin, I thought sleepily, I gave one life for this, I think I'm entitled to keep this life as a refund for that sacrifice, eh?

When I woke up, I wasn’t in my cabin. I was back in the infirmary, Chiron’s concerned face staring into mine, his hands covered in my blood as I coughed and coughed and coughed until I couldn’t feel anything anymore except for the liquid in my lungs and all over my shirt, drowning me on dry land in my own blood.
