The Muse Search

Chapter 2

- About one month later - I woke up in Hermes cabin (Yep, still unclaimed) and went to the showers. After I finished I saw myself in the mirror. Damn, I thought, I’ve gotten kind of ripped. I was no body builder, but for a fourteen year old kid, I had muscles. I saw my, normally curly, wet, dark-brown hair slightly covering my purple eyes, which always bugged me. No one ever talked about my eyes. No one. You think after fourteen years, someone would ask. Not even Sakura seemed to think it’s weird that I had bright purple eyes. Trying to stop thinking about it, I got dressed and got ready for another day at camp. In the month I’ve been here, I’ve made a few new friends, and one new best friend, McKenzie. Her, Sakura, and I just became a trio out of nowhere. Also, I heard all the stories of Percy and his adventures, which made me take a little bit of pride from the first fight I had with him. Now he trains me in sword fighting almost every day, the other days he’s off making out with Annabeth. I spent half my time in the infirmary because I would always hurt myself. I did that by trying to fight monsters in the forest. Just yesterday, I fought a hydra and nearly got myself killed, and I had two hydra fangs to prove it. Also on an earlier expedition into the forest I found something called Stygian Iron, which was a pure black metal that can apparently only be found in the Underworld. I’ve also been to Camp Jupiter, the roman equivalent to Camp Half-Blood, once and met some cool people like Hazel Levesque, Frank Zang, and Jason Grace. While there I ‘obtained’ an Imperial Gold sword. (When you live with Hermes kids, you pick stuff up, and things from people’s pockets ;P) I also enjoyed the Fourth of July fireworks show on the beach. During my free time today I decided not to sword practice with Percy today, which he was fine with him (probably wanting to trade spit with Annabeth), so I could do something I’ve been thinking of doing for a long time.
When I got to the Hephaestus cabin I met with Leo, he was awesome with forge and always had his Archimedes’ Sphere with him. He also had the power to spawn and resist fire, which was freaking amazing. “Hey, Leo, can I ask you a favor?” I asked. “Depends on what it is.” He said. “I need your help to forge a sword I had an idea about.” I explained. “Go on.” He urged me. “Well, it was going to be a mixture of all three different monster slaying metals and modumetal, with a hand guard and pommel made out of hydra teeth, with the grip being dragoon blood wood bound in minotaur hide.” I said. “Wow, slow down there. Where do you think I’m going to get that stuff?” Leo asked. “I have most of it; all I don’t have is the modumetal and the dragon blood wood.” I said. “Wait when did you get some imperial Gold?” Leo asked. “Well, you can say I ‘found’ it while on a trip to Camp Jupiter.” I said. “You stole it you mean.” Leo said. “Steal is such a strong word, but yah.” I said not hiding the fact. “I would be willing to help you but, I don’t have any modumetal for a blade.” he said. “I can get it.” I said. “How, for how much would be needed to forge into this sword,” he said as he pulled out a calculator from his tool belt, which could spawn any tool he wanted, “it would cost about one thousand dollars.” He said holding up his calculator to me. “Modumetal doesn’t cost that much.” I said. I knew this because of looking it up on a reliable website. “True, but you can only buy it in tons.” He said. “Oh, well, I could still pay for it.” I said. “What, when in Hades did you get that kind of money?” Leo shouted. “Gods you’re loud. I get about five hundred bucks every two weeks from the courts, because my mom’s dead and I normally save half of it every time. So I’ve built up about sixty-five thousand dollars in a bank account.” I said doing the math in my head. “My gods, your freaking rich dude!” Leo shouted. “So, will you do it?” I asked. “Sure, for sixty-four thousand dollars.” he said. “Ha, very funny Valdez. Could you also make it have a state like Percy’s pen or Jason’s coin?” I asked. “Now that will be a bit more challenging but yah I could.” he said. “Here, just payment in advance.” I said as I gave him fifty bucks and ten golden drachmas. “Thanks dude.” Leo said. “No problem, but could you not tell anyone about my money, please?” I pleaded. “Sure, your secret’s safe with me.” “Thanks. So, when do you think the sword will be done?” I asked curious about when I could wield my new blade. “Probably a week, or when I get the modumetal.” he said. “Cool, and thanks again dude.” I said. “No problem.” He said.
The week had passed and Leo came to me early in the morning. I woke straight up when I noticed why he was here. “So is it done?” I asked eagerly. “Yep. Now, close your eyes and hold out your hands.” he said. I did as he said and then felt something hit my hand. It felt circular and it had a small hole in it. I opened my eyes and I saw a ring with a black onyx in it. “Cool, it’s a ring.” I said. “Yep, and to make it a sword you press the black onyx on it down.” he said. I pressed the crystal and it transformed into a sword with a swirl of black, bronze, gold, and metallic silver. It had the hydra-teeth hand guard and pommel. Also, it had the minotaur leather grip. It also had a black onyx in the middle of the hand guard. It felt perfectly balanced in my hands. It was perfect. “I call it Omnia, Latin for everything, because it has a little bit of everything in it.” he said. “This is awesome, thank you so much.” I said. “No problem. Also, to turn it back, you need to tap the onyx in the hand guard.” he said as he went to breakfast. I put the sword back into to ring form and went on to breakfast. While I ate breakfast with my cabin, Apollo came down with his sun chariot, which was a bright golden sports car, to camp. Everyone was in awe and I was wondering why the sun god was here. “Hello everyone, greetings and salutations, I have some bad news.” Apollo said. Did he just make a bad haiku? I thought. “My lord Apollo, what is it?” Chiron asked. “The muses are gone, they’re all missing from Olympus, now we need a quest.” Apollo answered. Another haiku? I asked myself. Then Percy said while stretching “Okay, I’m on it.” “This time you won’t lead, new blood is need for this, and it shall be him.” Apollo said while pointing at me. “What?” I Percy and I said in unison. “All the Olympians unanimously agreed that he will take this quest.” Apollo said still pointing at me. “But, why him? He hasn’t even been claimed, plus, this is way too big of a quest for someone who’s only been here only a month.” Percy said, which hurt a little. “Even you father, is in agreeance with us, so it shall be him.” Apollo said in yet another haiku. “So you want me to find the nine muses?” I asked still hurt at what Percy said. “Alright, I’ll do it. Do you have any leads on where they are?” I asked. “We aren’t sure were but we believe that you should start your search in Hoboken, and the sooner you can leave the better.” Apollo said. Him saying that made me feel a little off. “Okay I’ll leave right before lunch.” I said to the sun god. “Good, now prepare for your quest.” Apollo said as he got into the sun chariot and sped off into the sky.
Chiron said I was allowed to pick two other people to come with me. I immediately decided Sakura and McKenzie would come with me. Most of the camp was shocked I didn’t pick Percy and Annabeth, but I thought that if the gods wanted me to do this, instead of Percy, then he shouldn’t be part of the quest at all. (Sorry dude, I guess you don’t get to have all the fun) We three spent the rest of the morning packing and getting ready to head out. When I was ready, I went to check and see how the other two were doing. I went to see Sakura first. She had just got out of her cabin when I saw her. Then, we both went to check up on McKenzie. She was putting the last few things into a backpack. She had her bow and quiver strapped over her shoulder. “Looks like were all ready to go.” I said when she zipped up her backpack. “I guess so.” McKenzie said. “Let’s go see Chiron then.” I said. When we got to the Big House, we saw Chiron standing with Mr. D. and other campers about to see us off. Percy wasn’t there. I guessed he was still mad about not going on the quest. “Are you ready?” Chiron asked us. “As ready as we’ll ever be.” I answered. “Alright then, I wish you the best of luck on your quest.” Chiron said to us. “Okay kids, everyone into the van.” Mr. D. said hurrying us out of there. All the campers waved us goodbye on our way west towards New Jersey.
The ride was about an hour of us discussing how we thought of how the quest would go in a van that smelled like strawberries. Mr. D. was dead silent on the way there. That made me worry, so I asked, “Are you alright Mr. D.?” “Yes.” he said like he didn’t want to talk. I just backed off and went back to my conversation with McKenzie and Sakura. When we finally got to near the border of New Jersey and New York, we unloaded and Mr. D. sped off. “That was weird.” I said. “Yah, he didn’t even say bye.” Sakura said. “Well, whatever, let’s get going,” I said looking down the road, “Hoboken is just a few miles that way.” I said pointing west-word. So we followed the street down until we wound up right next to the Williamsburg Bridge, right outside of New York. “It looks like we’ll be heading through the city.” McKenzie said. “Yep, unless you guys want to swim around the city?” I said. “I’d prefer not to swim across the Hudson Bay.” Sakura said. “Alright, let’s go.” I said. We made it across the bridge and through about nine to ten blocks until we decided to take a rest at one of the restaurants. We stopped at the Olympic Restaurant, which was a decent little place. It was mainly a breakfast joint but it had other things for lunch and dinner. I decided that I would try one of their breakfast dishes just because. I got three pancakes with bacon, while Sakura got the stuffed grape leaves and McKenzie got a grilled chicken sandwich with fries. After we got our food we chowed down. “This place isn’t half bad.” I said with a mouth full of pancake. “Don’t talk with your mouth full.” Sakura said. I just stuck out my tongue at her and she did the same back. “Now, now, children, behave.” McKenzie said in her best motherly voice she could muster without laughing. After I swallowed my mouthful of pancake, I said, “Sorry mom. Alright I’ll stop.” in the best sorry voice I could. “I’m sorry to.” Sakura said following my lead. Then we all busted out laughing. After that, we paid for our meal and head down the street. It was another thirty-two blocks until we reached the Hudson River. “So how do we get across?” I asked. “We could hitch a ride on a boat.” McKenzie offered. “I guess we’ll have to be stowaways.” I said in a pirate accent. “I just noticed that we haven’t been attacked by monst-” Sakura was cut off by a hoard of harpies shrieking overhead. “You were saying.” I said. “Never mind.” Sakura said. The harpies attacked us. We dealt with them quickly, just a few cuts and scrapes. “When did you get the new sword?” McKenzie asked. “I had Leo make it for me, he finished it this morning.” I answered. “What’s it made out of?” Sakura asked. “Celestial bronze, stygian iron, imperial gold, and modumetal, for the blade. It has hydra fangs for the hand guard and pommel, and dragon blood wood wrapped in minotaur hide as the hilt,” I said, “it’s called Omnia.” “Wow, that’s a lot.” she said. “Well I’m weird, even more so than most demigods.” I said. “So, should we stow away on a boat?” Sakura asked. “Alright, let’s do it.” I answered. We got on a boat that was from the ‘BubbaGump Shrimp’ company, which was weird because I didn’t think that there would be shrimp in the Hudson, but none the less, we reached Hoboken.
