The Muse Search

Chapter 4

We head do south for a few days. Along the way we fought a few monsters, nothing to spectacular. “I’ve been meaning to ask,” Sakura said, “why are your eyes purple?” “Finally,” I shouted, “someone has finally asked.” “What are you talking about?” she said “I’ve been waiting years for someone to ask me about it, even though I have no answer except that I was born with them.” I said. “You haven’t always had those eyes,” she said “you got those after you prayed to Limo” she said.

Then we reached the Potomac River in Mannes County, Virginia, and were interrupted by a giant crab attacked us. (You read that right, a giant f*cking crab) “Why is Sebastian’s big cousin attacking us?” I asked. Then the monster roared in anger (I guess it’s not a Disney fan) and swiped at Sakura. I pulled out Omnia and blocked the giant crab’s claw. “What is that thing!?” Sakura shouted. “It’s Crios, one of Poseidon’s right hand, or should I saw claw, men.” McKenzie said. “Why is it attacking us!?” I asked. “How am I supposed to know?” she said back. “Well doesn’t matter, it’s attacking us, so we fight it.” I said. I jumped up on its back and tried stabbing it. Its shell was tuff and I couldn’t break through before it swiped me off. McKenzie was shooting it with explosive arrows. ‘Cool’ I thought to myself, but I shook that thought off because I had to focus on fighting. Sakura and I rushed at it from both sides. She went on top while I went under. She stabbed it where I had cracked its shell from before with her knife. And I stabbed it in a chink in its underside. It screamed out in pain. Before we could do it again, it grabbed Sakura with its claw. “Help me!” she cried. “Let her go!” I shouted. (A little too enthusiastically) I slashed straight through the crabs elbow and that made the claw that had Sakura in it drop. I went to go and help her. “Are you alright?” I asked with my hand extended to help her up. “Yah, uh, thanks.” she said. We stood there kind of awkwardly, until the crab roared and was about to smash us with its other claw. Before it could, McKenzie shot it in the mouth with about five explosive arrows and turned it into a pile of giant crab legs. “Thanks for the save.” I said. “No problem, we’re a team after all.” McKenzie said. “Let’s rest here tonight. I hope you like crab, because that’s what we’re having for dinner.” I said. We ate and joked around the campfire until we were all tired and went to sleep.

This is weird, I thought to myself, why am I in hell? The landscape around me looked, well, like hell. There was a river below me that was made of fire. The land looked like a beach of black broken glass. There were high cliffs all around the river. Also, there were a lot of different monsters all scattered about. I even saw a hunk of flesh that was moving. It looked like it was trying to find something. Maybe the rest of the body it came from? I thought to myself. “Hello, Joshua.” A voice said to me, but I couldn’t find the source. “Don’t be alarmed, I’m not here to hurt you.” the voice assured me. “Who are you,” I said trying to assess the situation, “and where are my friends?” “They’re fine,” the voice said, “you all are sleeping soundly.” “What?” I asked. “This is just a dream, but this is also real.” it answered. “You lost me.” I said. “I’m talking to you through your dreams.” it said. “Okay, but still, who are you and why am I in hell?” “This isn’t hell, it’s Tartarus.” the voice said. “So, Greek hell.” I interrupted. “In a nutshell, I guess.” the voice replied. “You still haven’t answered my questions.” I said. “I am Tartarus and I’m here to tell you something important.” it said “Wait I thought I was in Tartarus?” I asked. “Yes but I’m the spirit of this pit.” Tartarus said. “So are you separate things, just with the same name or are you and the pit the same thing?” I asked. “We are both the same thing.” he said a little mad. “Sorry, I have a lot of questions.” I apologized. “Well, hold on a minute.” he said.

Then a flash of light appeared in front of me. I shielded my eyes because it was so bright. When the light subsided, I saw a big humanoid shape of purple muscles wearing armor, with a face of a black hole. “So this is your physical form?” I asked. “Yes.” he answered pissed again. “Sorry.” I said. “The reason I brought you here is to tell you something. It’s about your godly parent.” Tartarus said. “Wait, don’t tell me.” I said realizing what he was about to say. “Yes, I am you father.” he said. “Cool.” I said. “You took that rather well.” he said. “Well, when you spawned in front of me, your muscles reminded me of my eyes, plus, have you read my username?” I said. “Username?” Tartarus asked. “”Never mind.” I said. “I have one more piece of information for you,” he said, “the gods are hoping you die on this quest.” “What, why?” I asked. “They fear your power. They think of you will over through them if you realize your true potential.” he explained. “That can’t be true.” I said in disbelief. “Remember Crios, that was Poseidon’s work.” Tartarus said. “Oh my gods, they’re trying to kill me.” I realized. “Yes, my son, but don’t respond with anger, respond with determination.” he said. “Why are you turning into a motivational speaker?” I asked “Sorry, I never had a mortal child before. The only children I’ve had before were monsters and primordial gods, titans, and giants.” he said. “I guess you don’t have any experience with this, huh?” I asked. “Nope.” He said bluntly. “Well, good luck with that.” I said. “You’re a part of this to, you know?” Tartarus said. “Yah, I know, but, you’re the one with the new experience.” I said. “Whatever,” he said, “I have other news for you. It’s about your quest. You’ll find the muses somewhere westward as well as south.” “That’s descriptive.” I chided. “They’re blocked from even my eyes.” he said. “How, I thought you were even stronger than the gods, kind of the whole point they want me to die, right?” I asked. “The one who kidnapped them was someone even more powerful than me.” he said. “Who?” I asked eagerly. “Chaos, the nothingness everything spawned from.” he said. “What, why!?” I asked. “Even I don’t know his intentions, but I fear the worst.” He said. “Do the gods know?” I asked. “No they don’t, that’s why they put a demigod on this quest.” he said. “Oh.” I said. “It’s time for you to wake up, son, and remember don’t be angry at the gods, just prove them wrong.” Tartarus said as him and the pit faded to darkness.
