The new Goddess

26. Alex

I was still looking for a secret door in the wall.
'There has to be a way out. There just has to...' I said more to myself than to Mathew. After a while I gave up and sat next to Mathew who'd gave up a long time ago. I sighed. 'What now?'
'I don't know...' He answered.
I'd gotten used to the dark so I could look around now. It was like we were sitting in a little round chamber with no ways out. Really depressing. There was a tiny spot of red light on the ground. That came from the gap above us. The entrance to this stupid hole.
'Cant we just climb?' I asked.
'You're kidding right?'
'No.. Actually I'm not.'
'You're crazy. That's like: hey let's die now instead of in a few days.'
'So... What's the difference?'
He sighed. 'Okay... Let's try it.'
We got it and I heard him mutter to himself why he'd said yes and that it was a really stupid idea. I ignored it.
Mathew went first and I followed him. It went surprisingly good.
'This isn't that bad right?' I said.
'Shh. I'm trying to concentrate here.'
'How high do you think we are?'
'Hmm about 25 meters or something?'
'Wow that's not high.'
'Well it's higher than a normal house and I wouldn't like to fall of that height. So please be quiet and concentrate.'
We climbed further in silent when suddenly a stone fell down and almost hit Mathew head.
'What the...'
A second stone fell and this time it hit Mathews head. He screamed and fell.
'No!' I yelled and fortunately i could grab him before he could fall to the bottom of the hole.
I looked if he was alright but he definitely wasn't. His head was bleeding and he was unconscious. I felt his weight getting more and more heavy. I looked up and saw shadows in the red light by the entrance of the hole. Someone or something was trying to kill us. Another stone fell down and hit my shoulder. I bit my lip and tried to ignore the pain. My fingers were the only thing that were holding the wall now and I felt them slowly slipping away. No. I thought. I should've had listened to Mathew. Two stones fell this time. One hit my head and the other one my fingers and before I knew it I'd let go. I felt the blood running down my face but it didn't matter. I had to save Mathew. That's what mattered now. I pulled him to me and held him so I would hit the ground first and he would fall on me and not on the ground. Maybe that would save him.
We fell for a long time. Apparently we'd climbed pretty high. I felt Mathews warm body against mine, it was weird to feel it because my skin was always so cold.
The entrance of the hole was so little now that I knew we could hit the ground any moment. I prepared myself for the moment I would hit the ground and tried to breath calm. This is the end, I thought. 'I'm sorry Finn, Tess, Abby and Callum for leaving you.' I said to the air. Tears appeared in my eyes now. 'Im so sorry.' And on that moment I hit the ground. There was just enough time to feel Mathews body falling on mine before I closed my eyes and everything turned black.
