Long Island Chapter 9: I Get Gassed

Griff's POV

I sprinted as fast as I could down the stairs and out the Big House door. I had to get to them. I had to get to them.

“HELP! CABIN THREE!” I screamed towards the Apollo medics as I kept sprinting, not caring about anything else in the world. I had to save them.

It took me about fifteen seconds to reach the Cabin Three door. I had brought one of my pistols just in case, and when I tried the door, it was locked. I thanked Poseidon and Athena for making me take the gun, because as it turns out, I needed it. I pointed it at the door and fired, the gun ringing out through the peaceful campground.

Campers screamed when they heard the gunshots, but I didn’t care. I had to save my family. I ripped the door open, and when I saw them, it was like a horror movie. I didn’t know whether to stay in the doorway and cry, or scream, or whether I should help them. In the cabin, my dad, Percy, my mom, Annabeth, Emily’s dad, Jason, Emily’s mom, Piper, Nico di Angelo, and Emily tied up like hogs around the cabin. Some of them had knife cuts on their faces, some of them had fresh bruises on their necks. Xavier really had been slapping them around.

Immediately, I moved to get Emily out first. No offense, but if anyone was going to survive this, it was going to be my girlfriend. My parents and hers had had their chance at being heroes. They could be sacrificed if need be.

But, that wasn’t the end of the bad news. As soon as I walked through the doorway, the gas stung my eyes. This wasn’t your normal ‘knock you out’ chloroform which I had been trained to deal with. This gas was mixed with a gas that deteriorated flesh, a nasty poison made out of aerosolized Greek Fire. I had no choice but to take off my shirt to use it as a gas mask.

But, as soon as I took of my shirt, the gas stung against my chest. But I could deal with that pain. I walked quickly to Emily’s chair, grabbed my mother’s dagger from my belt and sliced her free. Her entire body was covered in red lesions, and she was unconscious. But I dragged her out of the Cabin.

As soon as I dragged her out, the Apollo cabin was waiting in full to take her to the Infirmary. But I couldn’t worry about that. Emily was safe. Now, it was time to save my parents.

I grabbed Nico first, slicing through his bonds and dragging his light frame out of the cabin, leaving him with an Apollo medic. Then it was my dad, then my mom, then Emily’s mom, then Jason. Why Jason last? No freaking clue, I thought he’d be the strongest.

When all of them were out, I collapsed on the ground outside Cabin Three. My exposed chest was now covered in red lesions, and I couldn’t breathe. But I had saved them. I had saved them. An Apollo medic came up to me after Jason had been put into the Infirmary, and Chiron had been informed.

“You did it, man!” He said, rejoicing, “But what in Hades happened?”

“I—” I said, but then my entire body seized up. My eyes closed, but I could still hear.

“Oh Styx,” the Apollo camper said, “he’s going hypoxic, not enough oxygen to the brain. I need help over here!”

Then I felt multiple sets of hands helping me up. I realized with a painful jump that my back was covered in lesions too. My legs were covered in them, and my face too. But I didn’t care. I couldn’t care. I didn’t have enough energy to care. I had saved them.
