The Cold Summer

Our Secret, and my 'date'

Our Secret and my 'date'

Kliyah's POV

"Okay, time for an explanation you two." Capitola said, as she put her hands on her hips, and cocked her head to the side.

I sighed. "Okay. I guess you deserve the truth. Me and Nixie, we've lived in a foster home since we were two. We soon became best friends, and as the years past, we became inseparable. We shared all our secrets, even the little ones. We were like sisters. We moved from one foster home to the next, and started going by a different last name." I took a deep breath.

"About a month ago, we were on a field trip, and we made a run for it. Right as everyone was about to leave, we made a break for it. And, well, we ran because," I looked at Nixie. "Should we tell them?"

She nodded. "They already know the rest."

I counted to three, and on three, Nixie's hand burst into flames. I pulled off my gloves, and for the fist time in months, felt free. I felt a light sensation fill my chest, and swirls of snow came out of my hands. The ground next to me was covered in frost already. I quickly put the gloves back on, sighing on the inside.

"Awesome! I can do that too." Leo said, willing his hand to ignite for just a second. I stared the the flames, watching the curl, and lick his hand. He extinguished them, and shoved his hands in his pocket.

"We have to tell Chiron." Cap said, glancing at the frosted ground worriedly.

"No!" Me and Nixie shouted in unison. "No. Not right now. Maybe later, but please. Not right now." I said softer.

"Why not? You told us." Cap said.

"We don't want everyone to know Cap! I don't want to be considered even more a freak than I already am."

"Your not a freak." Leo said. "I'm the same as her, what makes you any different?"

I stared at him. "Have you ever seen anyone who could control ice and snow? The Boreads are the only ones, and they don't have kids. At least.."

"Alright! Just, be careful." Cap said, and we stated walking back to the forge.

When we reached the door Leo said, "Well, I have a project to finish. See you guys for lunch!" We started to walk back, but Leo grabbed my arm.

"Hey!" I said in surprise.

"Sorry. I was just wondering if you wanted to sit with me at lunch."

"Sure." I said smiling, and walk away. When I caught up with Nixie and Cap, they were waiting for me by our cabin.

"He looks happy." Cap said, looking past me.

"Huh." I said. I looked back and saw Leo looking at me and smiling really big. When he saw me looking back, he quickly turned around and retreated to the forge. "Oh. He just asked me to sit with him at lunch, so I said sure."

"Well you'd better go get ready for your date." She said, handing me an orange t-shirt that said Camp Half-Blood on it. I pushed her playfully.

"It's not a date Cap. He just asked me to eat with him! It's not a date." I insisted.

"Sure." Nixie said, teasingly rolling her eyes.

"Come on girls." I said, pulling them along into out cabin and shut the door.

When it was lunch time, went over to the Hephaestus table. I wasn't dressed up I was just in jeans in the orange Camp Half-Blood T-shirt.

"Hey." Leo said.

"Hey." I said, as I sat down.

"Leo, introduce us." Nalaylia said, nudging him.

"Oh. Uh, guys this is Kliyah. She's new." Leo said.

Nalaylia looks at my gloves, and then at me. "Why are you wearing gloves? It's like 75 degrees out here." She said.

"I just uh... really like them." I answered nervously.

"Oh okay." She said, but she still looked a little suspicious.

"So how does this work?" I asked, looking at the schedule in front of me. "Like where do I go?"

"Well," Leo started. "You got archery with your sister and Capitola, sword fighting with Percy, then dinner followed by campfire, sing-along, and then off to bed."

"Oh. Cool! But, uh Leo? I don't have a sword yet." I said, smiling.

"That's why I'm taking you to the weaponry shed." He answered, smiling too.

Justin, everyone stood up and formed a line in front of the giant firepit.

"Come on. We have to sacrifice a part of our meal to the gods." Leo said.

I stood up with my play and followed him to the fire pit. I scraped off a bit of the brisket into the fire, and pray to the gods asking one of them to claim me. I was expecting a meaty smell, but it smells like flowers and nature and freshly baked muffins.

We sat back down at Hephaestus table and I dug into the brisket, mashed potatoes with butter, and green beans. I took a sip of my Coke, and glanced at Leo. He was smiling at me, so I smiled back.
