I didn't choose life as a demigod. Life as a demigod rose from the depths of Tartarus and dragged me by the ankles into a living hell- well... I guess I can't complain, because its actually kinda fun down here.
And anyway, if I weren't a demigod then I wouldn't have met Annabeth. Long story.
So here I am- literally in the depths of Tartarus- when suddenly I realize. This might be my last chance to express my love to Annabeth.
I look over to her still body, and she finally stirs. I can't move, but I groan her name weakly.
"Annabeth..."
She looks around fearfully, tears running down her red cheeks.
"P-Percy?"
"Annabeth... Why... Aren't we dead?"
She looks around, obviously wondering the same thing, when she suddenly screams and I feel my blood run cold.
"What?! What is it?!"
"Sp-sp-sp-"
"Spider-?"
"SPIDER!"
"where?"
"Percy! We're SITTING ON ARACHNE!!!" Sure enough, when I look around, my eyes fall on the gruesome sight of Arachne's crumpled body. Her spider legs are bent at grotesque angles, and her eyes are all blank and animal like.
"Annabeth... I'm coming..." I moan, crawling toward her as fast as I can. which, mind you, is not very fast.
Once I reach her, I embrace her head, not letting go for a second. my mind wanders- to anywhere but here- and I hold her tighter.
She whimpers, saying "at least we didn't die..." but I was unsure if even that was a blessing.
"Are you able to walk?" I ask softly.
"... No. I can't walk. I swear I would try, but... my foot is just too broken." at that, she starts tearing up. "I'm so scared, Percy."
I don't know what to do. I know I don't want her scared. so I crack a joke. "How scared are you, on a scale of 'Circe's island' to 'Kronos is awake'?"
She smiles a little. "Circe's island was creepy, you know that!"
"Yeah... but we were little kids then. It is probably less bad than we think, judging by that."
She gives up, trying and failing to come up with a comeback. It's harder when you're so down in the dumps... or rather in Tartarus.
Suddenly, there is a growl from the shadows behind me. my hand immediately finds my pocket, unleashing my sword Anaklusmos (Riptide)onto a large boar-like creature that was attacking from the left. there is a sudden cry of pain behind me and I turn just in time to see Annabeth crumple to the ground. her hand hits the ground with a resounding 'slap', and I don't even have time to register that before I join her on the floor, our hands intertwined. I am hit from behind by another boar, and the last thing I remember seeing is two small wisps of air escaping my and Annabeth's lips. our last breaths in this world...
