Time's Daughter

Fear

I stared out at the water, that washed up gently on the sand at Camp Half-Blood. It was beautiful, the ocean. I couldn't count the number of times I had painted the salty water, but I had never, gone more than ankle deep in the water.
"What are you doing?" asked a voice behind me. I turned to see Percy staring at me, a look of bewilderment on his face that fit him perfectly.
I turn back to the water, plugging my headphones in. "Is it wrong for me to stare at the ocean?"
"No," he answered. "But it is a bit weird."
"Whatever," I muttered quietly, sitting down and bringing my knees to my chest. I was still afraid. Athaliah's story had scared me worse than I'd ever been scared before. "The sound of the waves is calming," I told him, since the idiot hadn't moved. "And I'm a bit stressed right now."
Percy smiled and sat down next to me. "You know," he said. "I've always found that actually swimming helps me when I'm stress."
"I can't!" I said quickly, a little too quickly actually. "I mean, I'd rather go for a hike, if I have to go something physical."
He looked at me strangely. "Then why did you say you can't?"
I turned red. Honestly, I couldn't swim. I'd never been taught--But there was no way I was telling him that. "I'm gonna go find Nico," I said, getting to my feet and running away.
Nico and Clarisse had stayed with Chiron, they were making plans or something for me. You know, basic stuff, where I would be living, who would be my permanent body guards, what we'd do when Morrigan came out of my body four days from now. Fun stuff.
I couldn't stand the stress so I'd kinda walked out, I didn't think they'd noticed--no one had said anything, Annabeth had given me a quick tour around the camp, and Piper had even lent me some clothes--I was wearing a camp t-shirt with the sleeves cut off and a jean skirt with black lace leggings. While Piper, had tried to find me some jeans, I was a bit small so I had to settle for the skirt and lacey leggings. Honestly, I didn't see what the fuss was about--I don't always wear just jeans--I do actually like dressing up from time to time--it doesn't bother me!
For a while, I had sat with them, but it was easy to see that I didn't really belong, after all, I was just a mortal, even if I did have powers, so wondered off on my own and ended up listening to the wave crash down on long island sound, but now I walked away from the comforting sounds of the ocean.
My attention was grabbed when I saw two children, fighting over in a tree. Weird, I thought, approaching them. They had climbed high into the tree to try and see into the big house. "Can you see her?"the girl asked. She had dirty blonde hair and vibrant green eyes.
"I'm trying!" snapped the boy, brown hair and blue eyes. "But you keep pulling on my hair!"
"Hey!" I called. "Isn't it a bit dangerous up there?"
They looked at me. "I found her!" called the girl.
"What are you looking for me for?" I asked bewildered.
"Well, you're new aren't you?" asked the girl climbing down, while the boy floated down.
I held up my hands. "Okay, who the hell are you kids?"
The girl smiled at me with evil intentions (I could tell--either that or I just am no good with kids and they're all just evil). "I'm Claire Jackson! Daughter of Annabeth and Percy Jackson."
My mouth dropped. "Mother of god! They're married!" The girl nodded, still grinning that evil looked. "And they managed to have you?"
The boy looked at me. "If I tell you my mom and dad are Jason and Piper Grace will you freak out too?"
I shrugged. "No that one seems normal--I just find it impossible that Percy managed to land someone like Annabeth."
The boy smile--his actually seemed nice. "Well, I'm Jake Grace!"
I looked at the two of them. Jake didn't seem that bad. Claire on the other hand I had doubts about. I sighed and pulled on my necklace--the dog tags my other brother had given me, when he came back alive from Iran the first time--just not the second. Claire noticed.
"Is that necklace precious to you?" she asked.
I nodded. "They're my brother's dog tags," I told her."The only thing I have left of him."
"Can I see?" For a moment, I didn't do anything, but I figured she was just a curious child, so I took them off and handed them over--my mistake. She took off running.
"NO!" I screamed. Running after her, but she didn't listen. Claire ran past the big house as I screamed after her, gathering Clarisse and Nico's attention--which had probably saved my life. Then she tore for her father, who happened to be swimming for out into the lake.
"PLEASE!" I screamed. "PLEASE! THAT'S THE ONLY THING I HAVE LEFT OF DARREN!"
Clarisse tore after me then--once I had uttered my brother's name she knew what had been taken, and what it meant to me, but Claire ran down the pier and jumped straight into the lake, and I was going too fast, Clarisse screamed at me to slow down, but it was too late.
I slid right off the pier and plummeted into the waters below. "NOOO!" she screamed, running ever harder. I started to sink. Why? I screamed at myself. I'm twenty-four! Why haven't I learned to swim? How could I be so incompetent!
I heard Clarisse jump into the water after me and saw her swimming towards me. I reached out as she grabbed my waist and hauled me out of the water. Just about everyone was gathered by the pier and Clarisse angrily dropped me on the ground and threw a towel at me.
"What the hell were you thinking?!" she screamed at me. "You know better than that! You could've died!"
My eyes welled with tears. Everyone was watching. I didn't want to do this here. Nico came and put his nice dry jacket around my shoulders. "Can we do this somewhere else, C.C.?" I asked.
She didn't seem to be paying me any attention anymore. Percy had swum to shore with his daughter Claire. "And you!" she screamed at him. "You need to teach your daughter some better manners and to take stuff from people!" She yanked the dog tags from Claire's hand.
"It was just a game," Percy protested.
I curled into a ball, and hid my face in Nico's chest. "What's she so angry about?" he whispered. I didn't answer. I felt like a useless child again. I hated feeling like that.
"That's little game could've gotten Angel killed!" Clarisse snapped.
"It's just a bit of water."
"ANGEL CAN'T SWIM!"
Silence fell around everyone. They all stared at me. I only hid my face into Nico's chest further as I sobbed. Such a stupid weakness to have, but it was the one I had. "Please," I whispered to Nico. "Please, take me away from here." He did. He picked me up and carried me to his cabin.

Notes

so I gave Angel a weakness--a rather childish one (hence the acting like a child hint previous) and she really embarrassed about it--wouldn't you after all?

I know I said I wouldn't be able to update, due to the dress commission, but my sister lent me her dragon aid thingy--so I could speak the words instead of type them while did the work---yay multitasking!
