I Shouldn't Be Alive

Chapter 2

As I entered the classroom, only a small fraction of the class was here so I quietly sat in the back next to a window. The scenery always calms me. The green grass shown with dew of the morning, slowly drying off. The sun shown brightly, making me squint my sensitive eyes.

Looking in my iPhone's face cam, I see a mark on my cheek tinted just a tad darker in a deep blue almost purple color. Dang, girls hit hard.

"Hello class!" I hear a loud and high voice of Mrs. Grace. She had a warm heart and totally got why I was mute. I smile at her as her voice arouses me from my thoughts, and I look to see the class already here.

"So class, today is project day!" She singsongs. She loves project day. The more creative, the better. "You will each be assigned a partner! Remember the last time I let you pick?" She mutters the last part. We all nod slowly. I wonder who'll have to deal with the mute boy.

"Look at the board and no complaining! You only had today to work on it, so I recommend doing it at lunch or after school." She states as she hands out papers explaining the work. I grunt quietly in annoyance. I'll have to work non-stop to get it done and it looks like it'll take a week.

I look at the board and to my dismay I got the most popular boy in our school, Ryan. Yeah I've never talked and he never talked to me, so I was nervous on his character.

Ryan is the jock of the school. He has deep brown hair and bright blue eyes. He's muscular and tan, and that's why half the girl population drool over him.

To my surprise I don't hear him protest or grunt in annoyance as he takes a seat next to me. He sighs thoughtfully and flips open the book to a section that can help us. Ryan began reading while I walked to the front desk to retrieve the poster we would have to plaster all this information on.

I smile inwardly at the peace which I usually never experience with the populars of my school. Half of them are stuck up and rude, while the other half is warned not to hang with the losers which would be me.

"Hey, sorry for asking but, why don't you talk?" Ryan interrupts my thoughts as I angle my head and face him. I give him the I'm-not-talking-look and he chuckles quietly.

"Please, at least write something down," he questions as he slides his composition notebook to me. I glare at it for a moment before timidly picking up the notebook and writing.

I wrote: "My life's not what you'd call normal. I don't want to talk and no one really accepts it. I just don't like school."

He nods as he reads it and hands it back. When I look, his handwriting is filled below mine.

He wrote: "I'll accept it. I used to be mute in middle school. But last year before coming to this school as a freshman, I decided to show them the real me and not back down. I understand you."

I felt my lips curve slightly upwards at reading this. Maybe things will get better for me. He is walking proof of it. The bell rings signaling second hour. I stuff the note in my pocket and smile, not in such a bad mood as before. Oh, and science is now my new favorite class.
