The Pharaoh's Wife

The Big House

They stood in the freezing rain for half an hour. “Is she coming yet?” Ariadna quivered and chattered her teeth.

“Let’s just hope no monsters come.” Sadie pulled her arms around herself and kicked her combat boots.

“Let’s go where the road leads us.” Ariadna moaned impatiently.

“Annabeth said not to without her so...let’s get moving.” Sadie trudged forward, leading the way.

They climbed up a large hill, and at the top was a pine tree, holding a golden material of some kind. Below the hill was a large camp, with a lake, several different cabins, strawberry fields, a forest, a large house, and some camp activities.

“Whoa.”

They stood next to the pine, and Ariadna could spot two figures running towards them. “Uh, Sadie, do you know them?”

“Annabeth. And that must be her boyfriend, Percy.” The two people got closer and Ariadna studied them. The girl had blond hair, and gray stormy eyes, and the boy had dark brownish-blackish hair and sea green eyes. Both of them wore orange t-shirts reading Camp Half-Blood.

They both seemed to be completely dry, even though it was pouring rain. “Hi, Sadie.” The girl, Annabeth smiled. “I told you I would meet you. This is my boyfriend, Percy. Sorry we’re a little late. Today’s his birthday.” Ariadna nearly grimaced. I bet he’s having a better birthday than me.

“Hi. Happy birthday, Percy. Yesterday, Ariadna Hamad here,” Sadie stuck her thumb at Ariadna, “was out cold, from fighting an Egyptian demon escapee from Chaos. I saw she had a symbol of Hecate over her head when she was in a coma, and-”

“I have different powers from a magician, even though I have the blood of a pharaoh.” Ariadna completed her sentence in a hurry.

“She’s obviously a daughter of Hecate.” Percy mused. “We better take her to Chiron.”

“Thanks, Sadie.” Annabeth said as she tugged on Percy’s arm. “I think we’ll take it from here, but if we ever need you in battle one day, Percy knows how to get to you, Seaweed Brain.” She kissed him on the cheek and Ariadna and Sadie said their goodbyes.

“Bye, nice meeting you, Percy.” Sadie disappeared down the hill.
“Come with us, we need to chat with Chiron.”

The large house appeared to be a soft blue, with a porch all around and multiple floors. Annabeth and Percy referred to it as the “Big House,” as they walked towards it, casually chatting. Ariadna plodded behind them, her clothes soaked and her hair wet and matted.

They entered the Big House, and Ariadna glanced around. It seemed like a normal living room, except for the fact that there was a stuffed leopard head on the wall that appeared to be sleeping. It awoke and roared at her. “Eep!” She let down her guard.

“Sorry about that. Seymour is hungry.” A man stepped into the room, his watery blue eyes sweeping to and fro. He looked a bit plump, and the animal print Hawaiian shirt didn’t do justice to his body figure. Though, his facial features still seemed stunning. He threw a piece of food at the creature and its jaws snapped. “Hello Peter Johnson, Annie Bell. Who is this?”

Ariadna realized he was asking about her. “Ariadna.”

The man smiled. “Ah, a lovely name, Ariadne. You must’ve been named after my wife. I am Mr. D, god of wine.”

“Actually, Mr. D, it’s not Ariadne, it’s-” Annabeth elbowed her.

“Don’t even try correcting him,” She whispered, “he hasn’t even learned my name even though it’s been about ten years.”

“New, I suppose, and did your godly parent claim you yet?” Mr. D waved his hand around, and summoned a can of Diet Coke out of thin air and popped it open.

“Actually, yeah, yesterday. When I was at the Twenty First Nome.” Ariadna wrung her hands together nervously.
Mr. D groaned. “First the Greek and Roman mix. Now this. I might as well try to ignore it as long as possible, you’ll probably just kill each other.” He strolled out while calling a name. “Chiron, there’s another new one. Don’t start the video yet.”

Annabeth and Percy exchanged looks. “Mr. D doesn’t really like demigods, so just excuse his behavior.” Percy clarified.

Ariadna recalled a book she had read about Greek gods. “He’s Dionysus, god of wine, madness, theater, and vegetation.”

“Exactly, how did you know?” Annabeth suspiciously asked.

“I-I just read it in a book.” Ariadna stammered, hoping she said the right answer.

A man sitting in a wheelchair rolled into the room. “Come into my office. I’m Chiron.” He led Ariadna into an office area, with bronze metal plated on every wall. There sat a desk holding a computer, boom box, record player, and full screen video.

In one of the few chairs sat a young looking boy, his fingers tapping his temple. His light brown hair was styled neatly and as his soft caramel colored eyes bored into Ariadna, they reminded her of the chewy candy she had loved the same color.

“Hello. I’m Henry.” He politely said, as he shrank into his seat.

“Hey,” Ariadna muttered, not in the mood for a great first impressions, “Ariadna.”

“Alright,” Chiron clapped his hands loudly together, “you may have many questions, and they will all be answered soon.” Ariadna saw that Percy, Annabeth, and Mr. D had left her for the other room.

He flipped off the lights, turned on a video, and exited, while closing the door behind him.

The video began rolling, and it was scenery from Camp Half-Blood. The tape soon flickered and the screen turned completely white, while the lights stayed off. “We should go tell Chiron.” Henry suggested as he stood up.

“No.” Ariadna simply stated. “We have free time, so let’s listen in.” Boys never thought plans through.

She shuffled around Chiron’s desk in the eerie lighting until she found her goal. “A pencil holder?” Henry thought out loud.

Ariadna shushed him, then silently dumped out the glass’s contents. “I get to listen in. It was my idea, so don’t complain,” she whispered.

Henry nodded, clearly intimidated. Good.

She pressed the glass against the door and pushed her ear on the other side. The voices echoed in a hollow manner as she eavesdropped.

“I told you what happened with Sadie, and I suspect Ariadna is like a bridge between our worlds.” Annabeth’s muffled voice was heard through the glass.

“But I wonder why she was claimed yesterday, when only a magician was present.”

“Did you ask her how old she was even, that could be the case.” The voices seemed indistinguishable.

“No, I never thought of that.”

“Lou Ellen will be in charge of her for the week.”

Ariadna heard footsteps coming towards the door. She quickly scrambled back, placed the glass where it was, and organized its contents as fast as lightning.

The footsteps walked back and forth, and Ariadna was relieved. “Phew, false alarm.”

Henry stared at her with wide eyes. “What did you hear?”

Ariadna stared back at him, maintaining eye contact until he broke away. “Do you know who Lou Ellen is?”
Henry nodded. “Well?” Ariadna tapped her foot impatiently, “are you going to answer or not, because we don’t have all day.”

“She’s a daughter of Hecate. That’s all I know.” He shrugged and focused on his hands. Lou Ellen was her sister.

The room flooded with light once again and the four entered. “Ariadna,” Chiron called her out, “we were just wondering, what powers do you have?”

Oh no, the dreaded question once again. “This white light thing that’s basically a blast of energy, I can disguise myself and others without them realizing, and um, I can...I can...” Ariadna cleared her throat, “control the dead.”

Chiron muttered something to Percy, and he sprinted out of the room. He mused to himself. “Hecate does have power over Necromancy, but not enough power that she passes it on to her demigod children, or maybe it’s just more rare.”

“Hen, Camilla will give you a full tour tomorrow after it stops raining, so just talk with your new siblings for now.” Chiron then instructed Henry how to find his cabin and Camilla, his sister. What Ariadna was wondering though, was why did Chiron call Henry Hen, even though Henry told her to call him Henry? Ugh, her head ached as the boy left and she shifted in her seat. Mr. D hadn’t bothered to come into Chiron’s office, so it was her, Annabeth, and Chiron. His brown steely eyes seemed to cut into her soul.

“Did your dad tell you anything?” Annabeth broke the tension that filled the air as thick as pea soup.

“Not really, but my stepmom always thought I was going crazy, because I saw different things than other people. Once, I saw a boy chasing a shaggy monstrous dog, but my mom said it was a poodle. She once even took me to a shrink when my dad was out of town, but whenever I saw a monster with my dad, he told me to go wait far away, and all I ever saw was him pulling out a ivory boomerang type thing, and then he yelled at me to look away.”

She poured out her life story. All the monsters and demons, and the demon her dad had married. She also had a half sister, and nobody believed her when she said she could do magical things, only her dad did. Her real mom had left after she was born, and her father never mentioned her. Her dad had always been there to protect her, except for the recent days before. His business trip had run long, and Ariadna didn’t know if he had even come back yet.

“Chiron.” Percy strolled into the room with two other people. The boy was a ghastly pale, with a skeletal like figure, and sloppily combed cute dark brown hair. His eyes at the second seemed glazed over, but Ariadna could tell they held a sort of sadness.

The girl, though older, was more familiar to Ariadna. Her jet black hair was cut a bit short and more straight though, her skin a little paler, and her bright green eyes had a more playful glint. Ariadna knew her from somewhere, and as she began talking, Ariadna knew from where. She was looking at herself.
