The Pharaoh's Wife

Mother Hecate

“I’m Lou Ellen, counselor for Cabin Twenty.” She was her sister, but Ariadna knew they were different.

“Nico di Angelo, son of Hades.” The boy introduced himself also.

Chiron smiled. “Let’s take a walk outside, shall we.”

It had already stopped raining, but the ground had a dewy feel to it, and Ariadna’s high tops that had just dried, were soaked again within minutes. The sun had begun to set, which made Ariadna question how long she had been in the Big House.

Chiron was no longer in his wheelchair, but a centaur. Where his legs had once rested in the wheelchair, the rest of his horse body had appeared. Ariadna hid her level of freaked out with a look of calmness.

The trotted, or at least Chiron did, towards a square formation of buildings. “The cabins.” Lou Ellen gave Ariadna explanations. “You don’t really get to choose your cabin, since they’re based on godly parents, but hey, Hecate isn’t all that bad.” In the middle of the cabins, there stood a large bonfire, burning.

“Lou Ellen,” Chiron called over, “grab the dagger Annabeth gave you.” Lou Ellen rushed into a stone cabin, and the cabin seemed to be surrounded by a greenish aura of magical protection.
“Ariadna,” Chiron looked down, directly at her, “how old are you?”

She fidgeted with her sweater. “I’m thir-fourteen.” Hey, today was her birthday, she had the right to mix up her age.

“When’s your birthday?” Nico casually asked, not knowing how upset she would get. She glared at him, straight in the eye.

“August eighteenth.” She mumbled. Her stomach was queasy, and she fought back tears, which wasn’t an unfamiliar emotion.

Nico stared at her, being the only one who had heard the date. “You...I-” He stopped and looked down at his feet.

“Could you say it again, I didn’t hear, sorry.” Annabeth genuinely didn’t know what she had said.
Nico shook his head as Ariadna blinked back her feelings. “It really doesn’t matter.” He closed off the subject.

Lou Ellen came back just in time, with a dagger in hand. “I don’t know how to get it back to it’s original form, we’ve tried all sorts of spells.”

She handed the weapon to Ariadna, and she thought of her dad’s odd ivory boomerang like tool. Suddenly, the dagger became just that. “How did you do that? We’ve been working on that forever.”

Annabeth nodded. “Lou Ellen, Ariadna seems to have a control over the dead. She must’ve gotten it from your mom, right?”

Lou Ellen’s eyes got as big and round as saucers. “Yeah. We’ve had a sibling with that kind of power, but he wasn’t claimed until right before his death. Everyone thought he was a son of Hades.”

Annabeth glanced at Nico. The sun began to set even more. She shook her head and glanced at the sky. “Tomorrow we’ll figure this out, just meet your siblings.” She sighed and looked over at Percy. “I have to go.”

Chiron gave Ariadna a few words of encouragement and he also was off. She was alone with Lou Ellen and Nico di Angelo.

Ariadna cautiously handed the weapon back to Lou Ellen. “I don’t know what to do with this.” Nico stopped the two girls before they left to their cabin.

“Wait, I need to talk to Ariadna for a second.” Lou Ellen cocked her head to one side, curious what was going on. “I’ll introduce her to my sister.” Lou Ellen, satisfied with his response, left them be.

Nico led her to a cabin with walls that simply radiated light. It seemed almost rainbow. Nico squinted his eyes and forged ahead. “Hey, Butch.” A bulky kid with buzz cut hair and a rainbow tattoo spun around.

“Hi, Nico. Wanna talk to Hazel?” Butch wave his hand in the air, and a rainbow appeared. “Fleecy, my mom’s assistant, owes me.” A young girl with cocoa colored skin and dark brown hair appeared as an image.

“Nico?”

“Hey, Hazel.” So this was Hazel, his sister. “This is Ariadna, her mom’s Hecate.”

Hazel gave her a warm smile. “Hello.” She greeted her. “Nico, I’m trying to help Frank and Reyna with some praetor tasks. What gives?”

“Well first, Dad says hi, and also that-” Ariadna cut him off. Just because you respect someone doesn’t mean you can’t interrupt them.

“Hi, sorry to intrude, but I’m very confused, and tired, and annoyed, and-” a laugh escaped from Hazel. "What?" Ariadna demanded

"Nothing, it's just that, what's the rush?" Hazel ran her hand over her scalp and relaxed her shoulders.

"Anyways," Nico shot a death glare at Ariadna, "Ariadna here has a small power over the dead, just like us, even though she's a child of Hecate."

"We should maybe talk with Hades." Hazel suggested. "He and Hecate are good friends, I think."

“Alright. Next time I’m in the basement I’ll ask Dad. Hey, and tell Reyna I say hi.” Nico smiled, but it looked like he needed more practice grinning.

Hazel also smiled, but hers was warmer. “Bye Nico, Ariadna.”

Nico waved his hand through the image and Hazel disappeared. “Let me show you your cabin.” He led her to the stone cabin she had seen Lou Ellen run into earlier.

“I’ll see you around.” And with that short good bye, she swung the door open and entered her new home.

Inside was nothing like she had ever imagined. Instead of being a medium sized cabin, which was how it looked from the outside, the interior was nearly as large as a mansion. Long hallways twisted and turned, almost like a maze. The room in front of her was full of floating spirits doing everyday chores, like washing dishes. Lou Ellen was sitting on a plush green couch, reading a book titled How to Train Cheese Demons.
“Hi. Wanna choose your room?” Lou Ellen looked up from her book and grinned at her.

“Um, okay.” She led her down one of the halls and Ariadna followed. Eerie light streamed from the ceiling and the two of them were alone in the hallways.

“Pick one that doesn’t have a name on it. Oh, and remember, our mother is the goddess of crossroads.” With that mysterious reminder, Lou Ellen slipped into a room, leaving Ariadna alone.

She strolled down the hallway, as the walls began to become a darker shade of gray. Some of the light gray doors she passed had actual names, like Greg, but others had different names, such as potions room.

Finally, she got to the end of the hallway, and the walls were pitch black. There were no doors left to choose from. Feeling around on the walls, she found another door, painted pitch black to blend into the walls. Since it had no shimmering white name on it, Ariadna turned the black knob and entered the room.

It was small, but in a cute quaint way. All that was in the room was a silver metal bunk bed, a small wooden dresser, and a full length mirror. The walls were a light blue, not her favorite color, but still pretty. The small window that let in light had a perfect view of the Big House.
Ariadna flopped onto the bottom bunk and sighed. Her birthday had been a long day. She fell asleep, dreaming of her mother.

Her mother was dressed in white robes with ornate silver designs, like alchemy symbols. Her dark hair, similar to Ariadna’s, barely came down to her shoulders. There is a green shimmer that surrounds her like an aura. She looked like a Greek statue, beautiful and ageless.“Happy birthday, Ariadna." Great, only her mom remembered her birthday. "Much more is in store for you, and you must learn to control your powers. By choosing the room you did, it shows that you take the road less chosen, and that may be good or bad. You decide.” And with that, Ariadna awoke.
