One Shots

It has been a year since the demigods defeated the earth mother, Gaea. Leo has returned from the dead and brought a girl named Calypso with him. At the rare moments when Reyna and percy and Annabeth who moved to New Rome came to visit Camp Half Blood, Chiron and Mr. D would let the nine demigods and sometimes with Calypso joining them stay out after curfew. Tonight was one of those rare nights when all the demigods were together in one place. Percy was engaged with Annabeth and the couples were still together, if not closer to each other. The demigods gathered around the campfire and just stayed to talk to each other, occasional pranks from Leo and Percy. Leo managed to bring a radio so they could listen to music as they sit together, enjoying each other’s company..

“When your legs don’t work like they used to before,
And I can’t sweep you off of your feet,
Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love?
Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks?”

The song, Thinking Out Loud, by the popular mortal singer, Ed Sheeran came on and the couples caught each other’s glances and they stood together and danced, following the example of Jason which stood up first and bowed in front of Piper and asked for a dance, which she gladly took with a light blush on her cheeks. Percy with Annabeth, Jason with Piper, Frank with Hazel, Leo with Calypso, all slowly dancing in each other’s arms. Nico and Reyna were the only one without someone to dance with and Reyna somehow looked as if the light around her has vanished, leaving her completely in the shadow, the only thing that made her visible was the light from the fire that reflected off of her armour. Her eyes were directed at the ground and Nico noticed that she was biting her lip and her breath was shake from holding back the tears that were forming in her eyes. Nico knew why Reyna was like this, looking at Percy and Annabeth dancing each other was like a stab in his heart, repeatedly. But Nico never had anything special with the son of Poseidon, but Reyna… she have spent a lot of time with the son of Jupiter. He can only imagine how it would affect Reyna to see Jason dance around with Piper. He knew to keep back because once he asked her about it and she snapped at him and yelled at him to go away and that it’s none of his business… but when the tears start to fall, he just couldn’t hold himself back. “Reyna…” He whispered, and without meaning too, his voice was full of pity and he knew she wouldn’t appreciate sympathy. She stood up and walked away to the woods, running as soon as she got far enough. Nobody else noticed, they were all still caught in each other’s loving stares and bright smiles. Taking a glance towards the son of Poseidon and daughter of Athena, making his heart ache even more, he followed Reyna to the dark.
He didn’t really know where she was until he heard crunching leaves and snapping sticks and then a heavy thud and clang from her fall and when her armour hits the ground. "ωχ, σκατά!” She cursed in Greek when she fell, how she managed to learn the Greek language he didn’t know. “Reyna!” He yelled reflectively, running towards the source of the sound. Her cape had dirt all over it since she must have dragged them all the way here, not bothering to lift the blessed fabric as she hastened away from the dancing couples.

“Just leave me alone, di Angelo.” She weeped, laying on the ground on her chest, her arms propping up her head so it doesn’t touch the soil. Her braided hair was in a disarray around her head but she didn’t seem to care. From the way she was just lying there and weeping, the way her purple cape fanned out behind her and how her armour glistened under the soft illumination from the moon and how a halo seemed to appear in the silvery moonlight, Nico can’t help but to think she looks like a princess… but he knew that Reyna was anything but a maiden in distress, the daughter of Bellona was a warrior.

“Reyna…” He said gently, kneeling in front of her. Her sobs were stifled but he could hear it anyways, and it was surprisingly heart-wrenchingly painful for Nico to hear. “Nico, please. Just leave me here alone.” She pleaded, but he wouldn’t leave her on her own, weeping in the forest ground… never.

“I’m not supposed to show emotion. I have been a soldier for my whole life, training all day. Showing emotion like this… it’s strange. Nico, why does it hurt so bad?” She whimpered, still trying in vain to stop her heartbreaking sobs. Nico didn’t know how to react to what the roman praetor just said. Emotion is what makes us human.

“Stand up, soldier.” Nico said firmly, surprised by his own sturdy voice. “What?” Reyna asked in mixed surprise and confusion and she finally looked up. Nico’s breathing hitched as his heart dropped… Her face was wet with tears and her eyes are red and puffy and her nose is runny. Her face looks strikingly pale in the moonlight and the only colour in her face was her natural cherry red lips, which was also bleeding from her biting it so often in the struggle to keep her emotions at bay. “Weren’t you the one who said that you have been a soldier and have been treated like one your entire life? Then I’m going to treat you like a soldier.” He said, the words just tumbling out of his mouth as if someone else was controlling his body, taking his form and using his voice.

She looked dazed for a moment before taking a deep shaky breath and standing up, her posture as amazing as ever. She stood up straight with her feet apart a little and her hand was behind her back, her left hand clutching her right wrist, with her chin lifted up in slight defiance. Even in a soldier pose, the ebony-haired girl would still have something that shows that she doesn’t always follow the rules, and that’s sometimes a good thing, because sometimes someone would need to take charge, to improvise instead of following the rules like a straight line. She looked straight ahead, as if Nico wasn’t there at all.

“At ease.” He whispered, suddenly feeling breathless in amazement by the grace and self-control Reyna had. She seemed to relax a little and a crazy idea appeared in Nico’s messed up mind. “Dance with me.” He said, but this time his voice didn’t sound like someone ordering a soldier. Genuine caring coated his words and Reyna gasped and stared at his eyes as if to wonder if he’ll break her heart like the son of Jupiter did. Nico stared back, but not in confusion, but with gentleness and softness as her gaze was like a confused deer’s.

Nico took a step towards her and took her hand in his and twirled her around, stopping her as she faced him. Her eyes were closed and her cheeks were flushed and she was breathless. “I never said you could.” She whispered, a faint smile heard in her voice. “You never said I couldn’t.” Nico countered with a smirk and touched her forehead with his.

People fall in love in mysterious ways…
Maybe just a touch of a hand…
Well, me - I fall in love with you every single day…
And I just want to tell you I am…”

Reyna made a ‘tch tch’ sound but glided along as Nico led them both through the dance and the song. He was surprised at how skilled he was at dancing, and how graceful she was in all the steps she took. The song was faintly audible from this distance but it was enough for them to dance with the tempo of it.

"So honey now,
Take me into your loving arms…”

Nico took both of her hands in his and gently pulled her closer to him so her back was facing him. He folded her arms so her right hand was touching her left shoulder and her left hand touching her right shoulder so her arms crossed in front of her chest and that automatically pulled them even closer so their bodies touched. She tensed a little but then he felt her muscles relax and he could practically feel her smile.

"Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars…”

Nico wouldn’t dare to kiss her just yet, in fear that the action would only grant him an angry red slap mark on his cheek. But he did stepped back and twirled her around so she was facing him and pressed his forehead into hers, letting only their foreheads and the tip of their noses touch. She looped her arms behind his neck and he grabbed her hips as they sway slowly under the moonlight and the stars.

"Place your head on my beating heart…
I’m thinking out loud,
Maybe we found love right where we are…”

“Maybe we found love right where we are…” She hummed along to the song and hearing her voice brought a smile to his face. “Oh, baby, we found love right where we are…” He sang too, following the ending of the song. “And we found love right where we are…” They sang in unison and in perfect harmony.

Even after the song had ended and laughter from the couples near the campfire were heard, the hidden daughter of Bellona and son of Hades kept on dancing… Just the both of them in a clearing in the middle of the forest. Barely illuminated by the moon as they sway to the non-existent music. Maybe they did found love right where they were… and little did they know that the other eight campers were observing them from afar, the girls giggling with each other and Leo just stood there, baffled, as Jason and Percy was just plain confused since they both thought that the two dancing demigods had a thing for them. But no… they found their new loves, and it was in each other.
