The Original Character Court

Douglas Dougherty

[Laurel]
[Last review before I sleep!]
Submitted by: Melonboy
Basics

Name: Douglas Dougherty
Age: 10
[Yikes. Please be careful with your OC.]
Gender: Male
Birthday: March 24, 2005
Ethnicity: Irish-Russian
Hair color: An almost bleached red color
Eye color: Hazel
Height: 4'1"
Weight: 92 lbs
Other physical descriptions: Douglas has a slight potbelly from overeating. He has an eating problem because his dad would force him to finish his plate at meals. It's become an habit for him. His eyes are slightly sunken in and he has permanent shades under his eyes because he always played games on an old handheld. The handheld is an old model and Douglas thinks that's why it doesn't draw monsters.
[That hasn't exactly been explained so I guess I can make this pass? Maybe?]
Sexual orientation: Bisexual, but he doesn't know.
[Okay.]

Personality
Positive traits: He is usually warm towards people and helps them. He is intuitive.

Negative traits: He is easily distracted. He does not have much common sense. He is gullible and easy to decept.
[*deceive]
[He's young, it makes sense.]

Other Personality traits: He is more of a thinker than a fighter.

Fears/Phobias: traumatophobia-the fear of injuries. He is not much of a fighter and does not know how to use any weapon. This fear stems from him being bullied majorly in 3rd and 4th grade.
[Okay.]

Fatal Flaw: His fatal flaw is of being a waste. This is in part because of his dad forcing him to finish his plate at meals because his dad told him he would be wasting the food if he didn't. It is also in part because of him reflecting on himself and feeling like he had no purpose and no one needed him.
[Oh yikes. Self-esteem issues.]

Family and Background
Godly Parent: Demeter
Mortal Parent: Cameron Dougherty
Other relationships:
Katie Gardener-Katie is protective of him because he doesn't know how to fight. They met when his dad left him at Camp Half-Blood when he was 9(explained in bio.)

Cameron Dougherty-His father. Cameron was very strict. He was a big part of Douglas' life, mostly not in a good way. Cameron didn't abuse Douglas, but he did force him to finish all his food. [That's technically abusing Douglas so yeah. :( Abuse comes in different forms, some less easy to detect than others. It's a sad reality.] This lead to Douglas' fatal flaw. Cameron also never stood up for Douglas, such as when he was's being bullied.

Jane Lumner-Jane is a daughter of Aphrodite. Douglas first met her when he was trying to repair his handheld at camp, because his father broke it. Jane bullies Douglas at camp and won't leave him alone. She is racist and hates Maria.

Maria Porjas-Last name 'j' makes an 'h' sound. Maria is mexican and a daughter of Themis. She is one year older than Douglas. Douglas met her at the campfire one night. Douglas and her are good friends. He likes her but is too afraid to tell her.
[He's ten. I wouldn't really advise telling someone that young.]

George Hunter-George is Douglas' only friend from elementary school. George is a mortal. Douglas eventually forgot about him when he went to camp.
[Youch. Oh well. Probably for the best?]

Backstory: It's a mystery how Cameron managed to attract the attention of Demeter, because he hated anything to do with dirt or plantlife, because of his highschool sweetheart dying buried alive by accident.
[HOW DO YOU GET BURIED ALIVE BY ACCIDENT?! OH MY GOD! THAT'S HORRIBLE! D: ]
Douglas was born almost two months earlier than he should have been. He almost died because his lungs weren't fully developed.
[Aww... premature baby. :( Though, i don't know if babies can survive at seven months. Usually, the earliest premature babies who survive into adulthood are the ones born at 8 months. I'm not an expert and I think Xan's at a party right now.]
His dad was more soft when Douglas was a baby but became harder on him when financial problems arose because Cameron had a betting problem.
Nothing too remarkable happened to Douglas before he went into second grade. When he went into second grade his grandma gave him an old handheld that belonged to his dad when he was a kid.
Douglas loved the handheld, even though it could it only play one game, tetris, which is a lot different than the current version. Douglas prefers the first version because it has the same entertainment but it's easier.
Douglas met George when he was being bullied in 3rd grade. George protected Douglas when he could. The two did everything together.
The bullying got much worse in 4th grade because George moved away. Douglas was bullied all through 4th grade. His dad had been gambling for almost a year now and got mad when Douglas tried to ask him about it. Cameron broke his handheld later that night. Douglas almost committed suicide because of the bullying and the fact that George had moved away. He felt trapped with his father and now his only refuge, the handheld, was broken.
What stopped him was a dream. In the dream, he was older, about 16. There was a girl there, the same age, who was beautiful. They were having a picnic on a hill in a meadow. The older him laughed at something the girl said and then they kissed.
Douglas felt like he had to find that girl and make the dream come true. This dream motivated him to keep living.
He couldn't fix his handheld and he couldn't pay anyone to fix it. He still didn't stand up for himself, though, but thankfully the bullying stopped because the bully moved away. Douglas kept looking for the girl through the half of fifth grade that he took.
[Is it just me or everyone's moving away?]
Halfway through fifth grade, his father dumped him off at Camp Half-Blood. Douglas was now convinced he would never find the girl.
That was, until he met Maria. He recognized her instantly as the girl in the dream. They became good friends.
He was claimed by Demeter two months later, and that's where the story starts.

Combat-related questions
Camp: Camp Half-Blood
Weapon of choice: Douglas is afraid of fighting and as such has never used a weapon.
[Hopefully he'll grow out of it!]
Powers and Abilities: Douglas has only one demigod ability, the ability to control the growth of plantlife. His power does not extend to any genetically modified plant or plantlife. He can't control vines either. Also, he can't control plants. Example, he can't make a tree wrap it's branches around an enemy. He can only influence the natural growth of a plant.
[how does he influence the natural growth? As in, he can only stunt or accelerate the growth?]

He also has intuition, a so-called 'sixth-sense'. It has nothing to do with his godly heritage.
[Can you define the limits of his intuition?]

I'd like to add that I created this OC on the spot, to test my OC-making skills. If I get a good judgement, I think I will write a story for him.
[If you're going to write a story for him, I suggesting writing him older because people tend to make the character/personality of 7-12 year olds a little too mature for their actual age.]

Comments:
Backstory was interesting but some parts were a bit "*head tilt* can this actually happen?" (like the buried alive by accident. Please state what happened because depending on the reason, it could bump your rating either up or down.) Powers and Abilities, please define the
limits. Oh and you didn't explain why Cameron dumped Douglas off at Camp Half-Blood.

Also, did Demeter tell Cameron she was a goddess or what? And how did they meet? It can't just be "poof! You attracted my attention! Let's frickle frackle!" and then out comes a premature baby.

Speaking of premature baby, I'm no expert on the topic and the sources I'm getting are saying different things and my human source (a bio major who would be an expert) is not answering her phone presumably because she's partying, can you double-check babies' developmental stages and what's the earliest premature age they can be brought into this world.

Also, if you want to stick with 10, please research the common characteristics of 10-year-olds.

Final judgement: Fields of Asphodel
