Hope by my friend Kate Hodel

there’s a girl in a corner
with tear stains on her eyes
no one ever warned her
life could hurt this much
her endless tears
and cries and fears
are silenced by the night.
her laughter echoes
her practiced smile
done with such deceit and guile.
no one has seen the other side
that she feels she needs to hide
her torn heart
her tearful eyes
no one knows what's inside
humor is how she hides the pain
the mask comes tumbling off her face
only when she’s alone
she let’s her tears roll down her cheeks
in an endless flow
now isolated from the world
never feeling whole
a cloud of darkness forms around
her crying face
she braces herself
for the she knows
that the cold and dark will only grow
and when she can’t hold on anymore,
she gives up,
and lets the darkness swallow her soul
she thinks all hope is lost
dying all alone
but then a light comes streaming in
the darkness where she lays
a gleam of hope
shining in the blackest of night
the tears slow
she looks up and follows the light
wherever it may go
she’s still chasing the light today
she knows somehow she’ll find her way
through the sea of endless night
the light gets brighter as she thinks,
maybe someday i will escape
the coldness of the night.
hope will lead the way
and when she does
she’ll see the sun rise again
like she’s never seen before
she finds herself
she starts beginning to glow
and maybe far away
somewhere all alone
a crying boy sees a light
and begins to follow it home
