Chapter 7

Chloe

Chloe didn't know why the invisible people wanted to stay hidden. Of course she knew who they were, she wasn't stupid! When she met his gaze she turned away instantly. She knew it was her father from his eyes. He looked exactly like the man Thalia described him as.
Chloe was confused. She was blonde. Why didn't she have his dark hair?
The woman who stood beside him glared at her, wrinkling her nose in disgust. She was chubbier than the other gods around her. Wrinkled sagged underneath her eyes and her black hair stuck out in curls. Her steely eyes cut into Chloe's eyes like daggers. Chloe sensed the woman not only hated her, but wanted she her dead too.
Chloe pulled on her breast plate and pulled her hair up into a ponytail. A few yards away Andrew spoke with his brother's about the plan Annabeth had left behind.
Chloe felt Thalia approach her from behind, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"What's wrong kid?" She asked.
"Nothing," Chloe said, looking over Thalia's face. "You look like him you know."
"Who?"
"Your dad," Chloe said. "You have the same grumpy expression. You should hang out."
Thalia rolled her eyes.
"My Dad and I aren't that close, Chloe," she said. "Here's something you don't understand. Our parents, don't hang out with us. Our relationship is merely biological in some situations."
Chloe frowned. Why would the invisible people be here if they didn't want to speak to their children?
"I'm sorry," Thalia said. "Your Dad is different than mine. He's understanding, but my Dad is more...sensitive to matters."
Chloe cocked her head, looking back towards the group that stood by Chiron.
"Thalia, do you think I'm crazy?"
"That depends," Thalia said. "You don't have an aluminum foil hat do you?"
Chloe rolled her eyes.
"No."
She walked away, heading towards Andrew.
"What's the plan?" Chloe asked.
"We're going to be scouting in the woods," he said. "Apparently the Ares cabin got their hands on some explosives. When we find them, we need to disarm them, fire off a signal from the flare gun. Green means go, red means stop, black means something is wrong."
Chloe took a pair of flare guns and attached them to her belt.
"Sister," the voice said. "Come here little sister."
Chloe clenched her fists turning around and grabbing her attacker by the throat. Nico stood behind her, frowning.
"Relax blondie," he said moving her hands away. "It's just me, death boy."
"Sorry Nico," Chloe said. "I thought you were someone else."
"I just wanted to let you know," Nico said. "Your sister should be here in an hour."
"Which sister?" Andrew asked.
"Annabeth," Nico said rolling his eyes. "I called her, telling her about Chloe's arrival. They would have come sooner but they've been held up in the mortal world."
"I guess that means Percy is coming too?" Andrew asked. "Looks like you'll be meeting your brother, Chloe."
Chloe looked towards Nico. She usually sensed nothing dangerous from him. This time she felt death.
"You sense death don't you?" Nico asked.
Chloe nodded.
"I contacted a few shades for the game. They will be guarding the flag."
The horn echoed through the clearing and Chloe ran to her starting spot with Andrew. Ten seconds passed and she ran into the woods, avoiding arrows and hits from Ares campers.
Andrew was directly behind her, sprinting as fast as he could. Chloe stopped in the designated spot they both knew would be clear. She shot off the first green flare, telling Thalia they made it.
"Sister," the voice said louder. "Come to the river sister."
Chloe winced, holding her hands over her ears.
"Chloe what's wrong?" Andrew asked.
Chloe bent over in pain, feeling as if someone had just stabbed her in the back. Then it was gone. Nothing was left but cold fingers wrapping around her throat. A tear escaped her eye and she looked back towards the river. Something floated on the edge.
Chloe swallowed hard in her throat. Andrew looked in the direction her eyes went, hesitantly walking forward.
"Stay there," he ordered.
Chloe followed him anyway, grabbing his hand. Her body shook as fear overtook her. What did she feel?
Andrew stopped close to the river's edge, picking up a shirt.
"You go look that way," he said. "I'll move the opposite way."
Chloe nodded, squeezing his hand before moving on her own across the bank.
"Sister," the voice said as she moved closer to the cold sharp pain. "You're next dear sister."
Chloe stumbled over a root, falling face first into something wet and sticky. She sat up, rubbing her eyes. Her neck tingled as she felt danger. Something was behind her.
Chloe turned around slowly, feeling a scream escape her lips as her eyes moved over Celeste's dead body.
Andrew came running from the opposite end of the river freezing in his place as he saw Chloe.
"Oh my gods," he said. "Celeste."
Chloe continued to scream, moving away fro the body, shoving a black flare into the barrel of the gun before firing into the air.
Andrew wrapped his arms around her as she sobbed into his chest.
"It's okay," he said. "You're okay."
"The voice," Chloe said. "The voice told me to come here."
Andrew met her gaze, wiping the tears from her face as he fired an emergency flare into the air, signaling to Chiron he needed to stop the game.
Thalia and other campers from the blue team came through the brush.
"Andrew," she said. "What the hell happened?"
"Celeste," Andrew said, shielding Chloe from the river.
Chloe looked up, finding Chiron's gaze.
"What happened?" Chiron asked. "She's covered in blood."
"I don't know," Andrew said. "We just moved into our positions and when we moved closer to the river Chloe noticed the body and tripped and fell in the blood."
Medics from the Apollo cabin rushed by Andrew, going to revive his sister.
Nico stood behind Thalia and Chloe met his gaze. He knew what she felt; the pain, the suffering, the anguish. He knew Chloe felt Celeste die.
Chiron nodded as a camper told him Celeste was dead.
"Everyone goes back to their cabins," Chiron said. "Thalia, please see to it that Ms. Williamson's body to the Big House."
Thalia nodded, giving Chloe a nod before walking with the Apollo campers who carried Celeste's body away.
"I'm sorry Chiron," Chloe said, bowing her head. "I didn't do anything, I swear."
"I'm not blaming you my girl, I promise," Chiron said. "I am however, curious. How did you know there was a body here?"
Chloe shifted on her feet.
"You'll think I'm crazy," she said.
"Chloe, I assure you, I will not pass judgement without reasoning," Chiron said, putting a hand on her shoulder.
"I felt it," Chloe said, glancing over his shoulder. The air shimmered before she saw the same bearded man as before. He offered her a small smile. He was proud of her.
"You sensed it?" Chiron asked.
Chloe nodded. "Yes. Is that bad?"
"Not at all," Chiron said, looking back towards Andrew who remained at Chloe's side. "Why don't you take Chloe back to her cabin, Andrew? I'll be there in a few moments with some materials."
Andrew nodded, motioning for Chloe to come with him. Chloe looked back at the group of invisible gods who stood with Chiron. Away from the group in the forest flashed a golden light, and then it was gone.
Chills shot down Chloe's spine. Whatever Andrew was seeing in his dreams was in the camp, and the invisible people were trying to find it.
