Chapter 8

Andrew

Andrew watched Chloe from a distance the next morning as he ate breakfast. He wished he could eat with her, he hated seeing her alone.
Chloe sensed his gaze, looking up and meeting his grey eyes.
He looked quickly towards Chiron then back towards her. He was worried the entire night what had happened in her cabin the night before.
Chloe held up her hands and signed the word "nothing", then "just..a..test."
Andrew nodded, looking back down a this breakfast.
The night before he had his same reoccurring dream, this time it was different. Instead of a horse Andrew saw Chloe, standing in front of him on the beach, a knife in her heart, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Why?" She asked. "How could you do this to me?"
Andrew tried to answer but he had no voice. Blood began to flow from the wound, and as Chloe collapsed on the ground Andrew jolted awake.
"You okay?" Steve asked.
"I'm fine," Andrew answered. "Just a little tired."
"Is Chloe alright?" Marcus asked. "She looked pretty shaken up."
"I'm not sure," Andrew said. "But Chloe is strong. She'll be okay."
Marcus looked in Chloe's direction, staring for a moment.
"She's uh...quite beautiful you know?"
"What's that supposed to mean?" Andrew asked.
"I think she's pretty," Marcus said.
"Careful bro," Steve said. "Andrew's claimed her."
"I have not-! I have not claimed her," Andrew said through gritted teeth. "Chloe and I are just..friends."
Andrew looked towards Chloe again, seeing her frown down at the goblet she had been drinking from. She dropped the glass, shattering the metal.
Andrew rose from his seat, running over to her as she began coughing.
"Andrew get away from me," Chloe croaked.
"You've been poisoned!" Andrew cried. "I'm not going anywhere."
"Andrew get away from her!" Chiron shouted from behind him, pulling him away.
Andrew watched as Chloe collapsed to the ground, coughing, wheezing for air. Pure white light came from her hands, moving into the air like thin fingers.
Andrew was thrown back when the light exploded. Tables and chairs were overturned, older campers shielded the younger campers from the violence.
Andrew looked towards the Hecate table, who seemed to be the only table remaining calm. Andrew shoved through the crowds, making his way over to Lou Ellen, the cabin head.
"What's going on?" Andrew asked.
"Chloe's just experiencing some pain," Lou Ellen said. "It'll pass."
"What do you mean pain?"
"I mean pain," Lou Ellen said. "It's completely normal. Except for the fact she's been inactive for so many years."
"What are you talking about?" Andrew asked.
"Chloe has magic," Lou Ellen said, sipping a cup of tea. "You couldn't tell? She practically had a flashing sign."
"Excuse me if I don't exactly notice that stuff," Andrew grumbled.
"My guess is Chloe grew up in a home where she couldn't use her abilities at all. The magic inside her continued to develop like it does normally, but since she never learned how to control it, it diminished when she became a teenager. My guess is someone gave her a potion to reawaken her ability."
"Why would someone do that?" Andrew asked.
"My guess," Lou Ellen said. "Is someone knew she would be powerful. It's hard to tell especially with someone who has never used their abilities. Because Chloe is the child of one of the Big Three, her magic can either be incredibly light or incredibly dark."
Andrew swallowed deeply in his throat.
"What happens now?" He asked, watching Chiron help Chloe from the ground, dusting the dirt from her cheeks and knees as two medics came to tend to her.
"My advice would be since her abilities have been activated is that she starts learning how to control them immediately. Otherwise, her magic will become to dangerous and her body could explode."
Andrew's eyes widened, worry causing his stomach to feel hollow.
"Worrying will never change the outcome," a wise voice said in his ear.
Andrew turned around, looking. No one was there. He bowed his head, feeling stupid.
Chiron walked from the dining area, his arm around Chloe.
"Do not worry my dear, everything will be fine."
Chloe met Andrew's gaze as she passed, fear in her eyes. Andrew sensed the fear in everyone around him.
If people didn't believe Celeste before that Chloe was a monster, they would now.

It became two weeks after Chloe had her incident with magic. Andrew watched her lessons from afar at the sword training area. During his break he would lean against the fence and give her a thumbs up as Lou Ellen taught her a new spell she would yet again, master easily.
Chloe especially enjoyed making potions from the books Lou Ellen supplied to her. Some were general, others weren't as they created small animals or a daze that would keep a person frozen completely for five minutes at a time.
Andrew continued to have his reoccurring dream to no avail, he tried everything. Chloe noticed he was tired.
"I could make you a sleeping potion," Chloe offered. "Lou Ellen says I've mastered my craft enough to make it."
"I'll be okay," Andrew said, handing her a can of Diet Coke.
They sipped their drinks quietly as their eyes poured over the myth books from Andrew's cabin. They hadn't found much on the golden-light besides the information from before.
Chloe sensed something, looking up from her book.
"Someone's coming," Chloe said. "I think it's...Chiron?"
"Very good my girl," Chiron said, patting her lovingly on the head. "You control of your senses are getting better."
Chloe gave him a smile before it faltered slowly.
"What's happened?" She asked. "You're..scared."
Chiron bowed his head.
"An old enemy of your uncle," Chiron said. "It's nothing to worry about, I promise."
Chloe frowned again.
"That's a lie, otherwise you wouldn't be thinking about it."
Chiron sighed, seeing the books they were reading.
"I see Andrew is keeping you up to date in your studies?"
"Yes," Andrew said. "I thought it would be different if we started with the primordial deities."
Chiron met his eyes for a moment before looking away.
"Lou Ellen would like to meet with you later," he said. "Don't be late."
"I won't Chiron," Chloe said, rising from her seat. She walked behind the centaur, grabbing another can of Diet Coke.
"Your shoe is untied," Chloe said, looking at the air.
Andrew frowned, giving her a look as Chiron walked away.
"Relax Andrew," Chloe said. "I know what I'm doing."
