Alexandra Orlova

Chapter 10: Meeting

“Hurry up, otherwise we’re going to be late.” said Will, as they approached the Big House. “I wonder whose fault was that.” mumbled Nico. They were making across the cabins just as the sun was setting, making the sky pink and azure and the central hearth glow a bright orange.
“Oh jeez, I’m sorry I had to reattach Kyle’s hand.” replied Will. Nico rolled his eyes.
“You could have given the operation to someone else, you know.”
“Yes, but I have more experience with such things.” Will turned to his boyfriend, “And, besides, Kyle trusts me with such things.”
“Maybe because he has such a crush on you.” retorted Nico.
“Ooor it could be that I have great healing skills.” replied Will.

They had reached the entrance of the Big House and were just about to open the door when a figure in black came running. Will’s expression turned into anger. “What’s wrong?” asked Nico.
“It’s her.”

She stopped just at the bottom of the stairs when she seemed to realize there were two people looking at her. Both guys and girl studied each other for a moment.

Despite knowing what Alexandra had done only moments ago, Nico was entranced by her eyes. He couldn’t help it. The fact that she was so pale and her hair was black only accented her mismatched eyes, the only things with color in them. She was wearing a black, slightly ripped, t-shirt and dark grey jeans, nothing weird, except for the fact that on her left leg was a bronze boot, glistening with small green things on it.

Will broke the silence. “What were you doing?” Nico was surprised by how sharp his tone was, as if the girl had slapped his mother or something, “Hopefully not trying to kill anyone.”

Nico was surprised by how rude that kind of was. Usually, he was the one who talked like that.
Alexandra straightened herself and answered, “I believe a ‘good evening’ is in place.” She got up the stairs, and got into Will’s face, which was a bit funny considering she was slightly shorter than him, “ And don’t worry. Even if I did kill anyone, such as you for example, I’d hide the corpse so well, no one would know what happened.”

“Don’t talk like that” said Nico, angrily. The girl turned, her mismatched eyes looking at him.
“Why not?” she asked, keeping her eyes on him. It was unnerving looking into her eyes. Especially since they were different colored, but Nico kept looking into them.

“Because you don’t have the right.” He got closer to her. “You are our guest. We’re offering you help and a sanctuary. You have no right to insult us.” He lowered his face even more so now they were face to face. He pointed to the sky. “Otherwise, you’d be breaking the laws of being a guest which were put in place by, none other than, Zeus.” He lowered his voice, “And, tell me, do you really want to anger him?”

He stood back, watching. Will was shocked, Alexandra’s expression was rather neutral calm, but there was some sort of fear in her eyes and she kind of looked proud, which kind of confused Nico.

All of a sudden, the door swung open, and Travis Stoll was flung out.
“And that will teach you to never mix the Cheez Whiz with Tabasco sauce!” yelled Clarisse, her face red as a tomato’s. The door swung closed.
Then it swung open again, to reveal Piper, “Uh… we were waiting for you, guys.” She seemed to notice Alexandra for the first time. For a while, it seemed like Piper was thinking whether to punch Alex or not. She seemed to decide against it.
At the place, she smiled brightly and said, “Come on, everyone’s waiting for you.”
Alexandra brushed passed Piper and went inside, as if she weren’t there.

Inside, all the cabin counselors were nestled around the ping pong table, doing different things, and causing a commotion. Paulo from the Hebe cabin was arm wrestling with the head counselor of the Nike cabin, Connor Stoll was arguing with Clarisse over the fact she threw his brother out, Lucia, head of the Hecate cabin was making Johnny, head of the Nemesis cabin’s finger disappear and reappear.
As Nico, Will, and Alexandra entered, the room went silent.

Chiron was sitting at the head of the ping pong table, with Mr. D on his right, who was looking around bored. Travis Stoll came back inside and sat next to his brother, Piper took her place next to Jason, and Annabeth and Percy, who’d seemed to be in a deep conversation, turned and looked at the newcomers.

The room had turned into an awkward silence with everyone looking slightly threatening. Nico glanced at Alexandra, she was looking down at everyone with a steely expression.
“Finally.” cried out Mr. D, “You graced us with your presence Nicholas Angel and William Santos.” He looked up from his cup, “We were getting worried.”
“Forgive them.” replied Alexandra. Nico realized she was speaking with a slight accent he didn’t know where to place, she continued, “I stalled them a bit.” she took the seat that was across from Chiron, “I hope you can forgive me for that, sir.”

Nico had to give her credit, she was good. Her voice wasn’t sweet or sing-songy but steely and serious. Much like a military officer. And she did sound sincere. Mr.D huffed and drank, Chiron looked at Alexandra and gestured for Will and Nico to take seats.
Surprisingly, there were two seats left, but they were on either side of Alexandra. So, Nico took the seat on the left and Will took the seat on the right.
“Let’s get this over with.” said Jake from the Hephaestus cabin, he seemed angry. Everyone mumbled their agreement. Just then, Argus, the security guy came in and stood behind Alexandra’s seat. He had a club hanging from his belt.

“What’s Argus doing here?” asked Lucia Moneta.
“Due to the fact that we haven’t established how dangerous our guest is…” started Chiron, “I have brought in our friend over there to keep her in place, should anything turn to violence.”
“Or a potential murder.” finished Connor Stoll.
“She wasn’t going to murder him, for the gods’ sake.” said George, head counselor of the Orcus cabin.
“She could’ve.” retorted Nico.
“Well, she didn’t.” George turned to give a look of disgust at Nico.

George Skarsgard, not unlike his father, had a rather sick sense of humor. He had oily brown hair, a lean face, and he was very skinny and sickly. He was well-known in giving huge, punishing humiliations, which is why no one ever made a bet with him for fear they would be humiliated for life.

Nico had a past encounter with a descendant of Orcus. It didn’t go so well, so he tended to avoid George whenever he can. That and the fact that Nico, being a son of Hades, and he being a son of Orcus, they both had roots from the Underworld, they both had different ideas on the justice system and blah blah blah. Basically, they couldn’t stand each other.

George continued, glancing at Percy, “He only got a scratch, that’s literally nothing.”
Before anyone could argue, Alexandra spoke up, “It’s not ‘just a scratch’.” Everyone turned their angry stares at her, “At that moment I could have slit his throat open...” She looked towards George, and he froze. “...with one move.” She said those silently.

People shuffled nervously on their seats. Much to Nico’s disgust, George smiled widely.
“Great”, thought Nico, “He’s found a potential mate.”

Alexandra turned towards everyone, her right, blue eye gleaming, “ First off, I may not be able to answer all your questions, for I may lie, which I don’t like doing.” The demigods were looking at her intensely, “Second, even though I am on both my feet and capable of walking, I will stay here for a week to gain some of my strength back.” She looked at her nails, “Any questions?”
Everyone was looking at each other, surprised. All this hustle for this?

“Uh… OK, let’s start with the basics, I guess.” spoke up Connor Stoll, breaking the silence, he looked towards Alexandra, “Who are you?”
“You know who I am. Alexandra.” was the monotonous reply.
“Yes, but don’t you have a last name or something?”
“Why?” Alexandra looked at Connor, making him a bit nervous.
“You know. So, we can find your family and relatives easier? Tell them you’re okay and not dead in some ditch.”
“Don’t worry about that. My family is dead.” she didn’t even flinch, as if that was nothing. That took a everyone aback, but, unfortunately, it was a familiar story.
“Urm.. ok, do you have a guardian? Foster parents? That type of thing.” that was Travis.
Alexandra simply looked up and shook her head a bit, “Nope.” she went back to her nails, “Any other questions?”.
“How’d you get on both your feet?” Annabeth asked, “I mean, we heard you had some sort of…”
“... paralysis on the left leg.” finished Alexandra.

Annabeth nodded, she was trying to contain her anger. She didn’t like 14-year-old girls attacking her boyfriend, “Yes. I doubt you prayed for a miracle or something.”
As an answer, Alexandra hoisted her left leg up and put it on the table, her metal boot thumping against the table. There were intricate glowing, green symbols adorning it.

Everyone edged closer to look at it, Jake’s eyes widened.
“Wasn’t Harvey working on that?”
“With Claire?” asked Lucia.
Alexandra didn’t answer. She hoisted her leg down. “Anymore questions?”

“Why did you attack Percy?” that was Jason. He looked towards the girl who was starting to become an even a bigger enigma.
She looked up, annoyed, “ Straight to the beef, huh?” Jason kept his cool, “ Since you insist, because I got tired of everyone being like ‘we don’t know her’ and ‘is she dangerous’ and blah blah blah, so I made it easier for you guys.” She gestured toward Percy, “I took one of your supposedly best fighters and…” she looked up as if looking for the right word, “... ‘fought’ him.”

“That wasn’t a fight!” yelled Clarisse, her face even redder than before. She stood up, her armor glistening, and glared at the weirdo, “You insulted him!”
“In any fight, you always insult or trick your adversary in hopes he loses it.” said Alexandra, her voice calm, “And in this case, your best fighter lost his temper and would have gotten killed.”

Many of the demigods were glaring at Alexandra, but some were glancing at Percy. Is it true that Percy, the great hero, who fought in not one but two major wars, got tricked and beaten by 14-year-old girl?
“Is it true?” asked George. “She made you lose your temper that easily?”

Before Percy could answer, Will stood up, “She did make him lose his temper, but…” He looked down at Alexandra, “... she wasn’t insulting him, personally.” He looked towards everyone, “She criticized his relationship with Annabeth.”
“Yeah, we know that.” said Connor.
“But we don’t know in what way that set Percy off.” finished Travis.
Surprisingly, Annabeth answered, “ ‘ Kind of a weird relationship, but oh well, love is love, right?’” She looked at Alexandra, he was mad, “Those were your exact words, no?” She turned towards everyone, “She judged my relationship with Percy because of the whole Poseidon-Athena rivalry.” She turned towards Alex, “And by the way, that rivalry is really minor compared to others.”

Alexandra simply shrugged, “Not true, but do go on.”
Annabeth took a deep breath, she looked like she wanted to stab her, but she kept it together. “Yes, he did lose it, and yes, he would have been killed, but he did what any person would do in such a situation.” She put her hand on Percy’s shoulder. “He defended our relationship.” She turned towards Alexandra, “And insulting a guy’s love life which you have no business in, is a pretty low way in winning a fight.” Annabeth smiled a bit, “But I guess for a person of your demeanor, it’s pretty high.”
Everyone looked at Annabeth with admiration.

“You done?” said the girl in black, “Do you have another speech prepared?”, she leaned back, “Now that you’re done Ms. Chase, let me state my opinion of your aforesaid speech.” She leaned forward, her hands clasped together,

“Let’s start from the end. One, in the end of your ‘speech’, are you saying that I’m stupid? Or to put it in your words, I have a low IQ?” There was tension in the room as the two girls were fighting with words. Annabeth gave Alexandra a challenging look. “Because if you are, than it is very sad that your boyfriend lost to me, a retard. Does that mean that he is even stupider than me?”
The anger that flashed in Annabeth’s eyes would have scared any monster, but Alexandra simply kept going,

“Two, when you said that the Poseidon-Athena rivalry was a minor thing and it wasn’t so important, let me tell you something, because of the whole rivalry we, mortals and immortals alike, take on our father’s names.” Alexandra’s eyes were shining with glee, “And there was a law. No, there were two major laws that cost many people their lives. One was that no child or relative of Poseidon shall enter Athens without any special permission from the king,” She seemed to be reading from a scroll or something, “, if one entered without special permission, they will be killed on the spot.”
“That’s not true.” said Annabeth, with no doubt in her voice.
“How do you know? Because it wasn’t written in your textbook?”
“No, because, by killing a child or relative of Poseidon, Athens risked his wrath.” Annabeth smiled, “No one wanted to make Poseidon angry.”

It was like watching a tennis match. One down spoke the other as the ball passed the net. Even Chiron and Mr.D. watched intently.

“And if Poseidon attacked Athens, he risked the wrath of your mother.” she looked at Annabeth, “Are you saying that Poseidon’s wrath is worse than your mother’s?”
“No, but-”
“Then are you saying that your mother’s wrath, Athena’s wrath is worse than Poseidon’s wrath?”

For once Annabeth was at a loss of words. Alexandra had cornered her. The daughter of Athena gritted her teeth. “That was dirty.”
Alexandra shrugged, “You will not like the second law.” She gave Annabeth a challenging look. “Do you dare, comrade?”
“Don’t call me comrade.”

Alexandra ignored and went on, a smile had formed on her face. She looked at Annabeth then at Percy, “Now the second law, it was forbidden for children of Poseidon and Athena to be together” She looked at Annabeth, “Meaning it was forbidden for them to fall in love with each other, have intercourse, reproduce, etc.”
“You could have stopped at the falling in love part.” mumbled Jason.
“That’s the thing that bothered you?” asked Piper, gently.
Annabeth looked at Alexandra, “And the punishment was?”

Chiron coughed, “That’s enough.” Everyone looked at him with surprise. He got out of his wheelchair form and stood, his head bumping the ceiling. He looked at Alexandra, a silent message. He looked at everyone, “Our guest over here will stay with us for a week, while then, she will be staying at the Hermes cabin…”
“What?!” cried Connor and Travis Stoll in unison, “Why can’t she stay in the infirmary?”
“Because I’m not sick.” The Stoll brothers looked at her, “Can you at least pretend to be sick?” suggested Connor.
By then, Chiron had clip-clopped and hit both of them in the back of the head.
“Ow!” they cried.
“... She will be staying at the Hermes cabin…” continued Chiron, “... and you will all stay away from her, for your safety.” He went and stood behind Alexandra, “Now, go eat.” He put a hand on Alexandra’s shoulder, “Me and the guest will be a bit late.” He looked at Mr.D., “Mr.D., please make sure that there are no food fights. It took days to clean the dining pavilion after that mishap with the Ares and Apollo cabin”

And with that, Chiron walked out of the room.

Argus remained behind Alexandra, who was still seated, as the demigods filed out of the Big House and headed to the dining pavilion. Connor and Travis Stoll gave directions to their newest cabin mate and left, grumbling at how unfair their life was.

“What attitude!” said Will, angrily, “I mean, you would think she’s superior to us!”
“What if she is?” asked Nico, as they headed to the dining pavilion.
“I- Excuse me? What do you mean? That she’s a goddess in disguise or something?”
“Maybe.”
Will stopped. He turned to look at his boyfriend. “You’re kidding me.”
“I mean, there is a possibility…” Will stepped closer, and looked at Nico intently, “Are you drunk? Did Mr.D. pass you something?”
Nico backed off, annoyed, “No. I mean… you didn’t sense it?”
“Sense what?”
“Her power.”
“What power?”
Nico was getting frustrated, “A buzz? A tingle? Anything like that?”
Will was looking at Nico, “Are you in love with her or something?”
“What?”,
“Because if you are, then tell me.”
“Yes, Will, I totally am.” said Nico, sarcastically. Then he frowned “Seriously?”
Will smiled, “Sorry.”
“I should be asking you that question.” They both laughed nervously. “Let’s go, I’m getting hungry.” said Will, he turned to Nico and put a hand on his shoulder, “We’ll discuss this later. Great men think better after they’ve eaten.”
“Gods, you’re such a dork.” But that still didn’t shake off the feeling as if Nico had seen Alexandra before. Just somewhere else...

“You shouldn’t have done that.” said Chiron. He was drinking his herbal tea that was said to get rid of his headache.

“I couldn’t help it.” said the young girl. She was leaning back on the leather couch where Percy had impaled his sword, with Argus behind her. She turned towards him, “What’s up? How’s your scar? Has it healed?”

Argus nodded, “Good.”. She brought a fist up, “Fist bump?”, Argus shook his head slightly, “Not on the job, ok.” She turned back to Chiron.
“How long are you going to keep me here?”
“I haven’t given you a lecture yet.”
“Oh please, I already know how it goes.” Alexandra took an air of a professor, “‘You shouldn’t have done that, young lady’, ‘Shame on you’, ‘I expected more from you’, ‘Don’t attack my demigods’, and yada yada yada.” She looked at Chiron, “Am I right?”
“You’re not too far from the truth, but you forgot one thing.”
“Ah yes, ‘You stay away from my students, and they’ll stay away from you.’”
“Exactly. But I think I also mentioned something about keeping them away from danger, no?”
Alexandra nodded. She got up from the couch, “Honored to hear you lecture personally, but I’m hungry.” She headed from the exit.

“Alexandra.” The girl stopped. “I know that we had a limited time together but, please, don’t hurt these kids. They’re not like you.” He got up and went to the grown image of the 10-year-old he used to know and put both his hands on her shoulders, “Can you do that for me? As a favor?”
Alexandra looked him in the eyes, and for a while, Chiron recognized the little girl he knew but then it was gone in second.
She took a step back and, without an answer, left.

Notes

*BOOM*

AAAAAAAAARRRRGGGHHH!!
*hits studio floor, causing a big commotion*

*What happened?
Shut up! *sniff*
*But I asked what happened...
Doesn't matter!
*But I-
Ugh! Since you insist, you nosy little cyclops!
*I didn't-
Both Athena and Poseidon had a huge argument over whose wrath was worse!
*That part that you wrote in this chapter?
Yes, you doofus. Now stop interrupting me.
*But I-
Be quiet! *fixes dress* Now, they called me up on Olympus to settle the whole dispute and I,
the fool that I am, said that neither of them had the worst wrath.
*How did that get you flung out of Olympus at supernova speed?
I- wait, how'd you know I was flung out of Olympus at supernova speed?
*Because that happened to me once, you see. I-
OK, enough about you, back to me. *takes back dramatic air* I said Zeus had the worst wrath!
*You said it in front of them?
Yes! Then the argument changed to all 12 gods debating over who has the worst wrath! *moans* And I was in the middle of the whole thing! *Grabs and shakes cyclops, half-giant something, whose name I don't remember*
*Hey!
There were TORNADOES! and STORMS! and HURRICAINES! and ARROWS! and SWORDS! and SPEARS! and ROASTED CHICKEN! * dramatically gasps* *dramatically faints to the floor*
*How did that get you thrown off?
Well, surprisingly it wasn't the tornadoes that flung me out at supernova speed. Hera, pissed that I started this whole thing because I had written about the whole Poseidon-Athena rivalry, grabbed me and threw me off of Olympus. And from what I've known, this isn't the first time she's flung something down Mt. Olympus at supernova speed. *sighs*
*(pats shoulder sympathetically) I know that feeling.
Shut up.
*Ok... I'm gonna get some ice cream.
*Nods sadly, sighs, looks at audience* Thank you for liking my story and blah blah blah. Subscribe, comment and vote... And don't come at my studio, hunting me for the fact I was late in submitting a chapter. I already got enough sh*t on my plate right now. Strudles! (or was it Tudles?)
