Jiper

The SUV swerved around a corner and pulled into the Goode High School student parking lot. Inside, two siblings bickered.
“Jason, you need to shut up and listen for a second,” Thalia demanded, glancing at her younger brother with his gold hair and Green Day t-shirt. He pouted and crossed his arms in the front seat, but Thalia ignored his attitude. “Tech crew will look great on college applications, and you can’t do any sports with a twisted ankle,” she rationalized.
He bit his bottom lip, pondering for a moment. “Fine,” Jason gave in, pushing his glasses back up the ridge of his nose. “But it better be worth spending an hour after school in the theater everyday.”
Thalia grinned like the Chesire Cat. “Oh, it will be.”

Thalia had totally been lying when she said it would be worth an hour of Jason’s time every single day. He had been forced to paint a sparkly pink wardrobe and already seen two kids try to get high off the paint fumes. The only solace to joining tech crew was Reyna Ramírez- Arellano, the stage manager.
Jason had gone to the same school as her since the sixth grade, and they’d only actually talked a few times. She was in charge of nearly everything. The teacher in charge of tech,Mrs. Dodds, simply lounged in a corner flipping through old crafting magazines.
Meanwhile, Reyna was designing the set, assigning tasks to everyone, handling lighting and sound cues, and coordinating with the cast. She was only a sophomore like Jason, but when the senior stage manager the year before had graduated, Reyna stepped up and took charge.
“Hey, you need to help me with bringing these props to the cast so they can practice,” Reyna looked directly at Jason while carrying two large boxes filled with plastic jump ropes. He set down his paintbrush and hefted one of the cardboard boxes out of Reyna’s hands.
“Sure,” Jason strolled with her out of the theater, away from the sound of drilling and smell of drying paint. “Where are we taking these?”
Reyna glanced back at him for a moment. “The multipurpose room, where rehearsal is.” Jason followed her glossy long braid that kept hitting her back.
The multipurpose room was about half the size of a gym, and filled with cast members. They had set up an imaginary stage, with only a few actors on the “stage,” while the rest sat on the carpeted floor doing homework or observing the scene.
Reyna strolled up to the director who was sitting in the only chair, “Here’s the jump ropes,” she began to exchange them, but the director pointed to where the actors were performing.
“Give them to her,” he gestured towards a tall Asian girl with pink eyeliner who was trying to lead the rest of the girls. Jason sort of knew the girl. She was a senior, Drew Tanaka.
Jason and Reyna headed over to the group and carefully set down the boxes. “Hey Drew,” Reyna caught the girl’s attention, “We brought some props.”
Drew sweetly smiled, but her eyes were emotionless. “Thanks hon.”
Jason gazed around the room. Most of the cast was made up of girls, and he wracked his brain to remember what musical they were doing.
Then, someone caught his eye. She was sitting near the director, chewing on her bottom lip as she studied a script. Her uneven braided hair, baggy sweatshirt, and bright orange Converse sneakers. Jason found himself staring. She had the softest lips, and eyes the color of something, he couldn’t exactly pinpoint. Her slouch when she sat, the dark tanned skin that-
“Hey,” Reyna broke him out of his trance, touching his shoulder. Jason jerked back, unaware. “We should get back to the theater.”
Jason rapidly blinked for a moment, then came back to reality. “Yeah,” he stuttered, “sure, sure, okay.” Reyna began walking past him, but he stopped her. “Wait, who’s that girl over there,” he said in a hushed tone.
“Her?” Reyna motioned to the girl. Jason eagerly nodded. “That’s Piper McLean, she just transferred here at the beginning of this school year.”
Piper McLean. Jason was transfixed. Maybe helping out with the school musical wasn’t so bad.

Notes

Okay, I haven't written fanfic in nearly two years, so sorry if I'm rusty. Let me know if you have any feedback because I love being critiqued. Also, can you guess what musicals I'm basing their relationships off of? Enjoy!
