When MYTHS Become Real

Water Fight

The first step in turning the tides in the gods' favor was closing that damn portal. Like before, everyone was too focused on each other to pay me any mind. I danced around the fighters until I reached. I could sense the magic in the water hard at work keeping the gate to Tartarus open. It gave off the same vibe as the River Lethe had. I was hoping that the Fates would be kind and let it be as easy as freezing the water like I'd done down in the Underworld. I mustered up my ebbing strength and waved my hand over the crystal water and made a fist. The liquid responded and the portal closed, leaving behind a rink of smooth ice that reflected the battle raging on Olympus. I took just a second to watch things play out in the icy mirror at my feet and figures this must be what it was like for the gods, always just watching us down below. Well unlike them, I wasn't going to sit by and
watch.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets wiggled its way into my head again. An idea formed but it wasn't nearly enough. I had to give Annabeth.
I went to turn away but something caught my attention in the glassy surface. It took all my willpower not to scream when the dark shake that was the Titan king joined me in the reflection. "Mnemosyne, what I'd the meaning of this?" he boomed.
My heart pounded but I kept my gaze trained on myself and flipped my red waves back. Mnemosyne was big on vanity so I hoped that would help me out here. "It's getting rather crowded here. All this hard work I went through and I feel like I can barely walk around and admire it. Plus, now I can see how pretty I am. I mean, not as beautiful as I normally am, but she's good enough."
Kronos was quiet for one painfully long minute. "How we became so reliant on Memory is beyond me. Fine. Do as you will."
I let out a relieved sigh when he walked away. I took another few seconds to check out my reflection in the ice, not because I was hot, but to be sure I didn't look as scared as I felt. When I was satisfied, I turned and scanned the throne room. Kronos made himself comfortable on Zeus's massive marble throne and watched as his forces gained ground. I hurried up to the Medusa ice sculpture. The ice was thick and wavy to keep her trapped in but it wasn't very shiny. I wasn't sure if I could manipulate the water to do what I needed it to. I put my hand on the cold prison and tried to morph it into a smooth surface but quickly stopped when it started to thin and shudder under my touch. I thumped my forehead in annoyance but I refused to give up. I placed my hand back on the cage and closed my eyes.
My other senses opened up. I could hear the clinking of swords like they were playing over a speaker, the coppery sweet scent of ichor, immortal blood, permeated the air. Below my fingertips, the ice was cold and wet and it seeped all the way to my bones. I could feel it waiting to respond to my command. I let out a slow breath and willed the solid water against my hands to become smooth like glass on the inside while still being strong enough to hold Medusa in.
Something shifted inside the prison. I heard, or more like felt, the Gorgon's panic. The icy inside became like a mirror. I think she knew that my little trick wasn't going to be good for her because she wiggled in the cage; I could sense the commotion through the water.
A few seconds passed before all movement stopped inside. I spun around just in time to see the Percy
stone statue turn back into flesh and fall to the floor.
"Big brother," Tyson called out. The floor rattled with his steps as he ran to our brother. A scaly monster that I didn't know the name of bared down on the pair. Tyson was bigger than the rest of us, but he was still a young Cyclops and more immature than us and even though he was tough, I still worried about him. And Percy was barely conscious so he was in no condition to fight. A curse escaped my lips and I drew my sword to its full extension.
Before I could take a step, shadow Kronos got in my way. I stopped dead in my tracks and looked up at him through my red lashes. I was scared for my brothers' lives but I was ready to play the annoying part of Mnemosyne. I went so far as to flip my hair. I looked up at him then my red lashes but I guess he wasn't buying it because the next thing I knew, his ghostly hand wrapped around my thrust and lifted me four feet off the ground.
I couldn’t breathe. My fingers clawed at his hands but it was like trying to pull away smoke. I coughed and my legs kicked uselessly in the air as black spots danced before my vision. “What?” I managed to gasp out.
“Did you believe me so stupid, little girl? I knew that Mnemosyne no longer controls you and you proved that you are once again the daughter of the sea. I’ll admit that it was intriguing to watch, but now you must pay with your life.”
Despite Kronos’s low opinion me, I wasn’t stupid. I knew that there was no getting out of here. But I still didn’t want to die and leave my friends in this mess. Perch Jackson was the strongest demigod since Hercules and maybe I could give them all a fighting chance if I could keep him distracted long enough for my brother to get up. But dammit, I had no idea what to do and my brain was going fuzzy from lack of oxygen.
There was a flash of black, which for a second I thought was maybe was my imagination as I died, but then I fell to the ground. My ankles popped and my ass hit the ground hard enough to bruise. I sucked in air greedily wondering if this was what it felt like to nearly drown. When I finally got my bearings, Nico was standing protectively over me with his sword drawn. Kronos roared but he seemed wary to attack so quickly.
“You’re awake?” I mumbled when I got to my feet. My right foot hurt but I ignored it.
“Yeah. Thanks for the headache, by the way.”
I grimaced. “Sorry. I was trying to keep you out of the way and make sure you didn’t spill the fact that I’m me again. Guess it’s a moot point now.”
“You two think that you can defeat me?! I am the father of all!”
That damn sickle arched toward us and Nico and I rolled away from it at the last second. The deadly curve sliced the air above us and chipped at the ice sculpture still in the middle of the room. We ducked behind Medusa and I had to catch my breath again.
“So what’s the plan?”
My green eyes narrowed at his black ones. “Seriously? What the hell makes you think I have a plan? I’m not Annabeth, you know.”
“We’ll I can’t think of anything.”
“We’re screwed. It took the three most powerful gods to defeat him. I don’t think the children of two of them would pack the same punch.”
“Fools,” Kronos thundered as the weapon made another go. “You forget who you deal with!”
The last few months of my boyfriend forgetting my existence flew to the front of my mind at his words. I still felt Mnemosyne's power coursing through me. She had had a sound plan to single-handedly take down all of the gods of Olympus. It would totally have worked it I hadn't been able to take control and intervene.
"Nico, I have a plan."
He gave me his sexy grin. "See? I knew you could do it."
I would've smacked him if this wasn't a life or death situation. I settled for shooting an annoyed look at him. "I'm gonna need your help. When I say, you'll have to distract him."
He made a face at me which was kinda cute. "You can't still be pissed at me for forgetting."
Hmm, maybe I was a little. "This isn't even about that. Are you gonna help me our not?"
Nico pulled me to his chest and cradled my jaw in his palms. "Be careful, Naida. I love you."
He kissed me hard before I could
respond in kind. I wished that we could stay like that but we were in a bit of a time cruch.
I pulled some water from the cage and morphed it into a softball sized orb. That was the easy part. The harder part was infusing it with whatever made people forget. It took a few seconds but I could feel when I had my own Puddle Lethe.
"Ok, it's ready. And don't get wet. GO!"
Nico jumped out from behind the ice and raised his blade. "Idiot," Kronos laughed. That creepy curved blade lifted again to strike him down.
I'd never been good at sports involving balls and my aim usually sucked, but it was different when that ball was water. I launched it into the air and the Titan king turned just in time for it to hit him square in the face.
