Half-Blooded, Half-Chosen

Chapter Three

Chapter Song - 2 Sides of Me

I had to go lie down after Isabelle’s fire in the kitchen, my head throbbing more than usual. Usually that meant Calypso had lost yet another hero. Lucky for me, we got to share our emotions! Yay! Her heart must be really broken this time, since my headache was worse than any other I have ever felt. The pain from her had been increasing since the past week. I don’t know why.Fun.

I threw my blankets aside, sliding my legs into bed. Lucky for me, no one knew my secret. Yet. My father (who is still a mystery to me...thanks to Maryse) took pity on Calypso and split her in half: Her personality and heart mirrored mine. According to what I had been told. Reliable stories indeed.

Assuming that is true...I sighed, wishing he hadn’t. I hated these migraines. I had found more of my papers stashed in Maryse's bag, and went through them...turns out that perhaps she wasn't telling me everything.

I shifted under my covers, unable to get comfortable or to stop the splitting headache that seemed to get worse as I moved. I rubbed my temples, but that only increased the pain.

“Dammit.” I cursed. “Why me?” I threw my hands up, my blankets blocking my frustration.
Groaning, I gave up and stood, blankets landing on the floor. I shuffled to the other side of my huge room. The Institute was majorly lacking in guests, so Maryse had Jace and Alec do some renovating and managed to make 100 rooms into 75 rooms. I did a once over of it before flinging my door open.

I was immediately hit with a vision: a boy on a beach...with Calypso? He looked rather familiar. I shook my head. That’s not right. A raft was bobbing towards them. She forced him on, and they seemed to exchange words. Suddenly, she grabbed him and kissed him, then shoved him away, and my headache got so bad I couldn’t remain standing.

My sight returned, and I slumped onto the floor, staring at the wall. “Ow.”

Alec rounded the corner, his black hair falling into his eyes. As usual. He was rubbing his thumb along a seraph blade, not looking where he was going. As usual.

I looked up at him from my spot on the floor. “Hi.” I said, massaging my head.

He jumped, the blade landing on the marble floor with a clatter. “For the love of...” He muttered, bending over to pick it up. When he straightened he turned to look at me, mouth already open for an onslaught of curses for scaring him when he paled.

“You don’t look right.” He stuttered.

“What?” I said, still trying to numb my throbbing temples. He made an exasperated noise and shoved me into my room. He tipped my vanity mirror towards me. “See?”

I squinted at my reflection before I noticed that aside form my hair being light brown I had different colored eyes and a spattering of freckles across my nose. “Oh no.” I kicked my door shut and stared at the mirror, grabbing it and evaluating my face closer. “No no NO!” I complained.

Alec stared at me. “What happened?”

Ignoring him, I patted my face, tugging on my hair. “Go back...” I said pleadingly. “I don’t want to look like her!”

Alec grabbed my arms and spun me around. “What. Happened?” He asked through gritted teeth. “A warlock spell? A glamor? What?”

I just fixed my eyes on his chest and tapped my foot, my thoughts spinning. How in the HELL did this happen? This wasn’t supposed to happen.

Alec shook me. “Adler!”

“Stop!” I yelled. “I have a splitting headac – Wait a second.” I made the connection. “Ohhhh.”

“Do tell!” Alec said, glaring at me.

“Uh...” I laughed nervously. “Yeah, about that.” Before I could answer, a light knock and “Addie?” came from outside. I buried my face in my hands. “It’s Isabelle. I can’t open that door.”

Alec grabbed my wrist. “Here.” He quickly drew a weird looking rune on my wrist.

“What are you doing?” I hissed.

“Hiding your looks.” He said. The rune faded into my skin and turned black, and when I looked back in the mirror I saw my familiar black curls and green eyes. I collapsed on my floor in relief.

“Addie...” Isabelle crooned through the door. “I know you’re in there...”

“Yes, Izzy. Come in.” I said, putting the mirror facedown on the floor.

The door creaked open and Izzy slipped through, tossing me a sandwich wrapped in parchment paper. “You didn’t make this, did you?” I asked, giving it a wary look.

“No. Picked it up from the deli.” She said, throwing one at Alec. “There you are. Mom wants to see you." She stalked out, hair swinging from side to side.

Once the door shut I let my back hit the floor. “What are we going to do?”

Alec unwrapped his sandwich and took a bite. “My mom might know something.”

“Then let’s ask.” I said, pushing myself to my feet. “She knows more about my past than I do.
