Two Bodies, One Soul
Running Wind
Annie tightened the laces on her sneakers as she tried to force down the hard knot of nervousness in her gut.
"Are you ready?" A hand rested on her shoulder and she looked up to see Tink.
"No." She admitted. It was no use lying to her friend.
"Don't worry, you'll be fine." Tink assured her before going to stand with the rest of the audience by the chariot track where the foot races were to be held.
A cheer went out from the crowd as the dryads ushered the competitors onto the track and they took their starting positions.
"Three..." Juniper called.
Annie bent down in front of the line.
"Two..."
She tensed her legs 'think spring, think spring'.
"One."
Annie barely heard the bang lf the start gun over the sound of her heart in her ears.
She was off down the track.
It was just her and the sound on her feet beating against the hard dirt.
Just her and her rhythmic breathing.
Just her and her eyes trained on the finish.
Just her and the roar of the crowd underneath the blood rushing in her ears.
Just her and the pumping of her arms.
Just her and the snap of the ribbon against her stomach.
Just her and the arms lifting her off her feet...
Then the realisation struck her. She had done it. She had won.
Just like that she had won. But the adrenaline coursing through her veins told her to keep running, to do it again, to keep going. And the elation from winning told her to celebrate.
She was carried off by the audience. They were chanting her name, but the noise was faded into the background by the sheer surealness of the moment.
She had won.
