Two Bodies, One Soul

Bow Strings

Delia

'Twang!' The bow lept forward in her hand as the arrow was released into the bullseye.
It had been two days since Annie had won the sprints and Delia was feeling great! She had easily 'twang'ed her way to the archery finals and now it was just down to her and a Roman that the announcer introduced as Tyler Bough.
She brought the bow back for another warm-up shot and was rewarded with yet another bullseye. Delia looked over at Tyler and he gave her a cocky grin before releasing an arrow to join the cluster in the center of his target.
"Archers, are you ready?" The announcer asked. They gave him a nod each. "You will each enter the practice room one at a time. A set of targets has been set up for you, you must shoot each of the targets. The one with the best accuracy will win. Tyler Bough will go first."
Delia looked back to Tyler, he gave her one last smug grin before pushing open the door to the practice room.
She waited about five minutes for him to come out. He came out to the applause of the audience but his face told her that he was not happy with what he had done.
Delia took a deep breath before pushing open the door herself. Targets were set up everywhere, on the roof, the walls, the floor. She pulled back her bow and began to shoot.
'Breathe, shoot. Breathe, shoot.' She told herself, firing arrows rapidly into the center of the targets. "Breathe, shoot." She kept going, fingers numb in the rhythm, until the targets were full and her quiver was empty.
If how the audience applauded Tyler was called applause, then by comparison the sound from the stands could only be called a roar.
She walked back out of the room and the rest of the day was a blur. She shook Tyler's hand, ate dinner with Kat, sang by the campfire then went to bed exhausted. But all the while only one thought was clear in her head.
"We may have won three matches, but we're not done yet. Not by a long shot."
