The Librarian
Problems of Our Own
Nico had forced me to lie back down and walked away with everyone else, who pretty much sat through the rest of the night arguing over what we were going to do about my brother and I.
"I'm a part of this...or so I thought." I murmured to myself as I stared up at the ceiling. I could hear hushed voices hissing and growling things in the other room, and occasionally I would hear "mortal" or "weak" and an immediate defensive voice would pipe up and shut the rest of the people up.
I rolled over onto my side, my head still sore and my entire body throbbing from the pain I had suffered. The magic that Calypso had worked on me was wearing off, and I knew it.
"She is truly incredible..." I heard someone say. "But she is also a fragile mortal."
I shook my head. I was done with this crap. I thought that these amazing people from my books were going to swoop down and help me with my life problems. What a joke.
"I'm outta here." I muttered to no-one in particular, pushing myself off the couch and trudging to the door. I pushed it open gently, pulling upwards on the door knob so the hinges wouldn't squeak. It was an old trick, if I ever needed to get out of my house.
Stepping into the cool air, I could feel the remnants of the moonlight hit my skin and the sun break through the night, lighting up the outdoors. I walked out of the driveway and onto the road and kept on going. I knew that I would reach civilization eventually, and I didn't feel like driving a car.
I had been walking for what felt like miles when I heard a horn behind me, and a large trucker pulled up on my side.
"You wan'a ride, li'le lady?" An old man leaned out the window, a cigarette hanging from his lip.
"Yes, please." I held onto my arm as I swung the other up to grab onto the door handle. He opened it for me, and pulled me into the cab, handling me gently.
"Where are you off too?" He laughed. He smelt like beer and sweat (none too pleasant) and an overlay of cologne that I suppose was supposed to mask the stench.
"Anywhere but here." I smiled feebly.
"Well, there is a truck stop about seventy miles from here, which is where I was headed. Is that okay?"
I simply nodded.
"Alrighty." He turned the key in the ignition and hit the accelerator.
