The Librarian

I walked into a wave of air conditioning as I stepped through the doors, letting it waft through my shirt and make me shiver.

"Hello." A pretty, dark haired girl greeted us in a heavily accented voice.

"Hi, Mickey." Nico smiled at her and began speaking to her in rapid Italian as I looked around the room.

A soft violin played from a sound system and elegantly dressed people milled around drinking from champagne flutes. Their beautiful gowns and black suits suddenly making me feel self conscious of my 'Talk Nerdy to Me' T-shirt and blue jeans.

"Hey!" Nico came up behind me and took my hand again, leading me past candlelit tables to a corner. "I got us a special table!" He winked as he led me through the maze of diners and out onto the street.

I stared at the simple wrought iron table that stood in the alleyway, covered in a checkered cloth with a basket of bread and flutes of bubbling liquid.

"I'm getting a bit of deja-vu here." I said. "Lady and the tramp?"

He just grinned. "I ordered pasta." I laughed and sat in one of the iron chairs, he sat in the other and sipped his glass.

"What's in it?" I asked.

"Wine, not very good though." He pulled a face and set down his glass. I pushed mine towards the center of the table.

"Good, at least I know I'm not missing out on much!" I grinned.

He looked at me strangely. "You don't drink?"

I shrugged, "I like being in control of myself." He kept looking at me weird.

"What?" I demanded.

"Nothing," He said, "I mean, just... I never really thought about mortals being all that interesting and I guess, meeting you I realize how wrong I was."

I raised my eyebrows. "Oh?"

"In a good way." He added. I smiled as a waitress brought us a plate of, yes, pasta.

"So corny." I muttered and I was rewarded by a grin.

"So, tell me about yourself." Nico said through a mouthful of thick pasta.

I twirled my fork thoughtfully. "What do you want to know?"

"Everything." He said. "But I'll start with the basics."

"Okay..." I started. "Well, my name is Kimmi Ye, I'm twenty-two and I work at the library while taking night classes in writing. I have a twin brother who lives in London where he's studying architecture and both of my parents live in Taiwan. They sent me over here to study when I was fourteen."

I looked at Nico and he motioned for me to keep going.

"My favorite color is purple, I love books and chocolate and rainy afternoons. I'm a cat person but I think puppies are adorable. I play the flute and the piano, I have never drunken alcohol in my life or gone to a single nightclub. I've never had a boyfriend since all of my heroes lived in books... or at least they used to."

"Wow." He said, "Kimmi Ye, you are perhaps the most interesting mortal I have ever met."

I inclined my head, "Thank you. What about you?" I asked.

"What about me?" He asked in return.

"Well, I just opened up, so it seems only fair that you do the same."

"But you already know everything you need to know about me." He said, devouring the last of the pasta.

"No, Rick was specifically vague when it came to you." I protested.

"And that," His eyes glimmered over his wine glass. "is all you really need to know."

I stared at him stubbornly. "That's not fair!"

He just grinned and stood, offering me his hand. "How about a walk down the canal?" I took his hand. Maybe he would tell me something about him eventually, maybe...
