The Librarian
Walking Down the Canal
It was dark now outside, the sun having sunk beneath the horizon long ago. We wondered down an empty street that ran along the canal. The water reflected the streetlamps and the empty shops, making me feel as if I could dive through the surface and just enter another dimension.
"What are you thinking about?" Nico asked, his hands stuffed in his jacket pockets.
"Nothing, just-" I gave the water another look. "Don't you think it would be amazing if there was another world under there, with its lights shining and its shops glowing just the same as us. Wouldn't it be amazing to just dive under the water and into that world?"
Nico gave me a curious glance. "But what if that's what we do every time we go under water. What if we come up in a completely different world and don't even notice it because it's the same as ours?"
I let out a low whistle. "Deep thoughts for a demigod."
He grinned, "Right?"
We kept walking, Nico was deep in thought.
"Now what are you thinking about?" I asked him.
"Stuff." He said vaguely.
"Very specific." I said sarcastically, earning a laugh from him.
"I was just wondering whether I should have done this. I mean, if you know this world exists now then I've only bought you danger, being my friend will make it worse." He admitted, staring at the tiled path.
"Hey!" I pulled him around to face me. "What you told me is worth more than my ignorance could ever be! A life of adventure and danger is what I've always dreamt of as a writer! This is my dream Nico, my dream come to life, and I wouldn't trade it for anything!"
He smiled and met my eyes. "I have a weird question to ask you?"
"Yeah?"
"Well I kinda have this thing on in the weekend, a demigod thing, and I was told to bring a girl. And I know you don't even know me but we'll just be going as friends and-"
I cut him off, laying a hand on his arm. "Nico, I would love to go with you."
He smiled, "Thank you."
"On one condition," I added. "You need to tell me about you."
He groaned and I gave him an angelic smile.
"Fine." He said. "Coffee tomorrow lunch, I'll explain everything. But now it's getting late so we should get back to New York."
I nodded. "Where's Mrs O'Leary?"
He grinned mischievously and pulled out a black whistle, blowing it silently. A black blur stretched towards us and within seconds we were perched on the back of the hellhound and speeding through the shadow dimensions.
We arrived back at the library where we had left, I dismounted and stood before Nico. He handed me a thin black strip of paper.
"My phone number." He explained. "I'll meet you here tomorrow at lunch."
And with that, he collapsed into the shadows, leaving me standing on the cracked sidewalk.
