The Librarian
Lattes and Bagels
We sat down at a window seat and ordered a latte each, Nico predictably also ordered a large bagel whereas I settled for just the coffee.
"I ate earlier." I explained to Nico's raised eyebrows as the waitress sauntered away. "While I was waiting for you."
"Hey!" He protested at my accusing look. "I told you I dropped my phone!"
I snorted, "Sure you did!"
He gave me a stricken look before he caught onto my sarcasm and laughed.
"You are quite a piece of work, Kimmi Ye!" He grinned.
I smiled. "You have no idea!"
The waitress sauntered back over, two steaming mugs in hand and a plate balanced on her forearm. She set them down in front of us and Nico handed her a tip before she made her way back to the kitchen.
I looked at Nico expectantly, but he ignored me and bit into his bagel. He looked up across the table and caught my eye.
"What?" He asked through his mouthful of food.
"You said you would explain everything over coffee." I pointed out. "And here we are... drinking coffee..."
"Oh, right." He said, diminishing the rest of his bagel. "Well, what do you want to know?"
"Everything, but I'll start with the basics." I grinned, taking a sip of my coffee. It was hot and bitter; delicious.
He groaned at my bad pun. "Alright then." He cleared his throat and began; "My name is Nico di Angelo, I'm twenty-five-years-old and I've been living in an apartment by myself since I left camp ages ago. I have a sister named Hazel and I used to have one named Bianca, but you already know that story. My dad is Hades and my mum is dead, killed by Zeus when I was little. I was born before World War Two and I was kind of in a hotel for a little while and I lost a few years."
I laughed at that. "Just a few?"
He chuckled but kept going. "My favourite colour is not black, it's actually orange, I just wear black a lot because I look pretty good in it." I nodded at that, and he grinned. "I love cold nights and personally I'm a bit of a hellhound person, I'm not much into cats. I'm trying to live as normal a life as I can but monsters keep attacking me, which kind of puts me off studying at NYU. Oh, and despite prior opinion, I am most definitely not gay!"
I frowned. "But Rick wrote about Eros and-"
"We might have made the mistake of giving him artistic license for that one." He said, cutting me off. "But I'm definitely straight."
"Oh?" I asked. "Prove it!"
He smiled, "Gladly." He leaned across the coffee and kissed me. His lips were soft against mine, tasting of coffee and his touch was gentle, hand tucked under my chin. Not bad for a first kiss.
"What?" A strangled cry came from beside our table, and it most definitely wasn't Nico. I jerked, elbowing my mug off the table. The hot liquid splattered over designer jeans and I looked up to come face to face with a pretty girl not much older than me.
"I'm so sorry." I gasped, clapping a hand over my mouth.
