Snow

Friendship

As Mark and I walked home through the scenic route to the school, I got a weird rush from inside. I brushed the feeling away, though, because I knew it wasn't that akward with Mira around.
"So, Mark, where do you live?" I looked around the area at the deserted townhouses.
Mark made a fake scared look. "My mommy told me not to answer that question."
All three of us burst out laughing, but I got serious. "But really. Where do you live?"
"Down the street from that school of yours." Mark stopped abruptly at a dark brown townhouse wedged in-between two other giant buildings. "In fact, this is it. Wanna go in?"
"Sure," Mira and I said in unison. We wanted to see what such a ramshackle place looked like from the inside.
We walked up the crooked steps to the building, where Mark pulled out his keys and stuck it in the hole. A faint creaking from the inside suggested the door was open. Mark pushed the door open, and the smell of pot roast wafted out. I longed for home, but since I didn't really know my parents, I knew it couldn't happen anyway. I lumbered down the hall into the living room where I plopped down onto one of the vintage couches, Mira following my lead. Mark headed into the kitchen, then came back out with some sandwiches
Mira grabbed one immediately. "Thanks a lot, Mark!" I laughed, taking one as well.
"Thanks. Where'd you get these?" I bit into the sandwich and tasted an explosion of tomato, lettuce, mayo, and other stuff.
"Oh, just from, well, I'll explain later. It's kinda complicated." Mark shrugged and took the third sandwich for himself.
Finishing my sandwich I looked around the house. It looked really nice, especially for how it looked on the outside. The light coming from outside dimmed really soon, and I looked at my watch.
"Holy crap, I gotta go. Mira, we're leaving!" I shouted.
Mira walked through the doorway. I said goodbye to Mark and we treked all the way back to school, right before curfew.
Debby, the office lady, stopped us before we could head to the cafeteria to dinner.
"What were you girls doing out so late?" Debby asked, crossing her arms in annoyance.
"Well," I started, "We met a friend and we lost track of time, so we are late."
Debby nodded and said, "Fine. But if you ever do this again..."
"Yeah yeah," Mira muttered. "Come on Selena, we gotta go!" She pulled me along to the dining hall, or as everyone called it, the cafeteria. We got in line with our trays and had lasangia plopped on our plate with vegetables on the side. After getting through the line, we picked up sodas and sat down at one of the tables near the exit.
"So..." Mira started.
"So what?" I asked, slurping down my Coke.
"You guys should like totally get together!" Mira clapped her hands excitedly before digging in to her lasania.
"Whaddaya mean?" I questioned, knowing the answer but wanting to drag out the conversation.
"You know who I mean," Mira teased, "Mark!"
"Oh, give me a break," I threw a napkin at Mira. "Mark and I would never get together. We're just friends!"
"Oh really..." Mira rolled her eyes at me.
I really was getting fed up with her behavior, so I silently finished my dinner and sprinted back to my room. I changed and went to my freezing bed. I wanted to know what the next day would bring.
