Nicolas Evens: The Rise of the new ones

Chapter 12

The journey south wasn't half bad. For most of it, I got to thinking about my mortal life. How my mom was still waiting for me back in New York City. How I had deserted her in order to protect her and myself from the monster attacks, and even how much I had missed her.

Victoria Evens. That was her name. She was a beautiful sight. Dawning myself back into the memory of my mother, I recalled the last time I had actually spoken with her. I was twelve, this was just a week before, I had ran away from home.

It was raining that day. I sat calmly, my face pressed up against the living room window of our apartment as I watched the rain pour out against the streets of New York. In the kitchen, my mom was cutting something. That detail escaped me, probably meats or veggies.

She wore an apron as she cooked. Glancing across the room, I could tell I had gotten plenty of my looks from her. She had long curly black hair and hazel eyes, like puddles of milk chocolate. I couldn't bare with the idea of losing her to those demons that had started attacking me recently. I didn't want my own mother to become a casualty of war.

Turning my attention back outside, I noticed a scrawny man. No. That wasn't it. This person, whoever he was wasn't human. I could tell based on his legs. They were masked in a thick coat of goat fur. Glancing up at me, I noticed his face. He looked fairly pale and had curly red hair. I didn't know why, but the instant I saw him I knew he would become an ally.

"Nicolas dinner's almost ready." My mom called from the kitchen. I smiled, taken by the intoxicating armoma of the food. My mom was always gifted when it came to cooking, which was one of my favorite things about her. She could've been a chef, if she had put her mind to it.

Sitting down at the table, I smiled as I took a plate and began serving myself. Once my plate was full of food, I rose from my seat and picked out a bottle of grape soda. Serving two cups, I returned with them in each hand.

"How was school today? I didn't get a phone call does this mean you weren't expelled again?" She asked. I nodded doubtfully and began eating. School wasn't my favorite topic to talk about. Aside from the learning disabilities like Dyslexia and ADHD, the kids weren't a healthy enviornment either. I had a habbit of drawing bullies. Something that came with the lack of confidence. Show confidence and bullies seem to pass you by, but if you hesitat, then you'll be a punching bag for the next year.

"Nicolas, what am I gonna do about you." She sighed. "I can't afford for you to keep getting into trouble. Besides, you can't be happy about changing schools every year, can you?"

"It doesn't affect me." I murmured. "I've learned that I'm not meant to have friends. Besides, they just go away at the first sign of trouble."

Grasping my hand, she stopped me. "Nicolas Evens. Why so down? You're only twelve years old. I'm sure that you'll make great friends one day. They'll be the best friends anyone can ask for. Until then, conaider me not just your mother, I'm also a friend." In a big grin, she smiled at me. But I knew one thing, that smile would be the last thing, I'd see on her face.

The next morning, I left before she had awoken. I left a note stating that I was going to be gone for a while. I told her not to look for me and to never tell anyone I had left.

She withdrew me from school, and for the next two years, I had gone to school that I could get in on my own. I never stayed long, but I would learn things here and there. That saytr his name was indeed Grover Underwood, he was the first real friend I ever had.

Grover taught me how to fight. He taught me how to survive and in all honesty, he also taught me how be confident in myself. Thinking back on it, Grover had become the most important person in my life, he had become my bestfriend.

Glancing around, I smiled as the three of us, arrived at the one place we needee to be. We had finally reached Atlanta.
