The Daughters of the Big Three

Chapter Five

“Uh oh,” Says Accailia.
“What?”
She looks at me and Drea and points. “Trouble coming, 2 o’ clock.”
I follow her gaze and see a group of girls walking toward us, giggling. They reminded me of cheerleaders. Great.
“You guys should go,” Drea says.
“What?” Says Accailia.
“Why?” I ask.
She sighs and says, “They’re only here to pick on me.”
“And you think we’re going to just leave you?” I look at her. Of course these girls are going to be bullies. Why else would they be interested in us?
A girl with light brown hair and blonde highlights says something first. “Drake, how much are you paying these two to hang out with you?” The other girls laugh.
I look at Drea. She is about to speak when Accailia says, “First of all, Danae, its Drea. Second, if I had to choose a dollar to hang out with her, or 1,000 to hang out with you; I would choose the dollar.”
“You wouldn’t be offered the second choice in the first place though, Accailia,” Says another girl. Danae smirks, then looks at me.
“New girl? What was it…? Eleanor?”
“Elaina,” I say.
“Honey, while you can, you better find some new friends,” Danae smiles. “I suggest us,” She smiles at me and gestures to her little group. I’m about to take a step toward her and leave Accailia and Drea, then I tell myself, don’t. I shake my head, and realize I didn’t tell myself anything, and that it was a man’s voice. But no one else seems to have heard it.
“No thanks,” I say.
“Um, I think yes,” Danae says with a little force. Somehow she is forcing me to do as she says. My body tries to give in but I try to control myself. I shut my eyes and will myself to say something back to her. Then I hear Danae shout.
I open my eyes and realize the ground around me is shaking. But I’m perfectly still. Danae and her friends fall down. The next thing I know a wave of lake water is flying over me and the girls are soaked. I’m now smiling and then it stops. The shaking and the water.
Danae and her friends stand up and look at me with fear. Then they run off. I look at Accailia and Drea who are staring at me. They are also a little wet.
“Did I do that?” I ask.
“Well neither of our dads are Poseidon,” Drea says.
“At least you didn’t electrocute anyone,” I hear Accailia mutter.
Drea looks at me then at Accailia, then back at me. She whispers to Accailia, but I can still hear her. “Was that an earthquake?”
“I don’t think Percy has done an earthquake before,” Accailia whispers back.

The next thing I know I’m at dinner. I try to eat but I feel everyone’s eyes on me. So I challenge each pair and soon everyone is looking at their own plates.
“Pretty much everyone saw it,” Percy says, taking a bite of pizza. “Or felt it at least. And when they felt the shaking, they all got ready to fight a monster and tried to see where it was coming from. Then they all realized it was you and… yeah you can guess everything else.”
I look down at my meal. I wish there was someone else, preferably another girl at this table that I could talk to.
“I’ve never caused one before, you know.”
“What an earthquake?” I question.
“Yeah. And the one you did wasn’t even very big. But if you made one like that not even on purpose, imagine when you actually try how big it could be.”
I nod. It kind of scares me though. Earthquakes are dangerous. Tsunamis are dangerous. And if I’m causing both without even meaning to… Wow.
In bed that night I think about my old life, my new life, and how they are the same. They aren’t much alike. But one of the weirdest things is, now looking back at it. I did swim team before, and I was really good at holding my breath. Percy told me he can breathe underwater. Was I really holding my breath? Or did I never realize I didn’t need to?
I have a lot of things to figure out.
