The Ambassador of Athena

I found myself sitting on a blanket in an ocean of flowers. It was the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. I sat there for a few minutes before a figure came towards me through the fields.
It was Palla, wearing a white dress, her hair braided. She carried a picnic basket and smiled when she reached me.
“Florian, nice you came here.”
I smiled too and answered: “It’s not like I had a choice. The goddess calls and the minions come.”
She laughed while she put down the basket and sat down next to me. Palla opened the basket and pulled out a bottle of soda and two ham sandwiches. I took one and asked her:
“So, why did you invite me here?”
She clenched her hands and whispered:
“It’s difficult. You know, I really liked you. You are a really impressive mortal, definitely worth the quest that is coming for you. But I am not here to tell you the obvious; I am here due to your company.”
I looked away and started to rip out flowers.
“You mean Johanna.” I said, my voice shaking.
She nodded.
“You know, she is a special case among demigods. She is my daughter, but also the daughter of her mortal parents. They met when they studied Maths and Physics at University, and they caught my attention. I was good friends with them, not the way you might think. But one day, many years later and after they already had 2 sons, I felt that I got pregnant, and I had to withdraw from them. Johanna is the result of the uniting of three great minds, possibly the child with the most potential. But for demigods with great potential the Fates have a special burden to make the count equal again.
When she was born the Fates gave her the fate that love would determine her destiny.
Her first relationship, the one before you, broke up before the threat grew bigger, but with you it was different.”
A horrible thought started to develop, but I blankly stared at her and let her continue.
Athena now looked desperate.
“I told her after 4 months of your relationship when it seemed that it would become something more solid that I wasn’t her aunt, that she is a child of mine and a demigod. I protected her the first 16 years of her life, but after that she started to attract monsters. I also told her about her fate, and I think I made her thinking about it.”
That was what I feared she would say, but hearing it didn’t make it better.
“You made her breaking up with me.” I whispered emotionless.
Athena stared at a flower next to her and said:
“No, I never told her to break up with you, I just…”
“You just told her that she has a bigger fate than me, that love would kill her, that I was her death sentence. You manipulated her into breaking up with me.”
I jumped up, now furious.
“You have no idea what you have done to me, not the slightest hint. I was depressed after the breakup, it took me years to get back to something called normal, and just before you arrived at the university I thought I was almost ready, but I wasn’t. And now you come here and tell me that you are the fault I had to go to therapy, the fault for my depression.”
She opened her mouth to say something, but I interrupted her.
“No. Don’t say anything. Just let me leave. I hate you, you and your godly friends that belief that you still rule the world. You don’t. Mankind has become free of your interfering and developed an identity where your interventions have no space. Learn that lesson, for your good.”
I stormed off into the field of flowers, just running, running, till the scenery dissolved into darkness.
