The Ambassador of Athena

Chapter 16 - Prophetic Dreams

I expected to wake up, but all that happened was that I felt weightless floating around through a pitch black room. I tried to say something, but I couldn’t talk, I couldn’t move, I couldn’t do anything. All of a sudden a guy appeared directly in front of me. He had grey hair, bright blue eyes and wore a dark coat. What irritated me was that I could not make out his face in detail; it was blurry like I saw it through vapour. He talked agitated to a cell phone and didn’t notice me at first, but after a few seconds he spotted me and said:
“Look, just do what I have told you, I have an appointment here. Bye.”
He put his cell phone in the depths of his coat and turned to me.
“Ah, here you are.” He said “You are here earlier than I thought. Bad dreams, eh?” He laughed, but I didn’t felt the need to join him. Besides that, I could not even if I would.
He saw in which state of existence I was and said: “Oh, right, sorry.” The guy snapped his fingers and I felt how my body got more solid.
“That’s better.” I said as soon as I could feel my mouth working again. “And who are you?”
The guy in the coat bowed slightly and said:
“Morpheus, god of dreams, nice to meet you.”
I bowed too, a little bit astonished, and said: “Nice to meet you. I just met your father.”
He nodded. “Yeah, you met my old man. I have to admit he was a good father, better than other divine dads.” He sounded nostalgic when he continued. “He always played hide and seek with us, my brothers were the best in that game, and once it took us 3 days to find them…” He shook his head. “But I am drifting away. I called you here for two reasons: First I wanted to see you myself, the new favourite of Athena, and second to deliver your first prophetic dream myself.”
I was a little bit confused. “Okay, but may I ask you a question?”
He gestured me to go on.
“Weren’t you an enemy of the Olympian Gods in the second titan war?”
Morpheus shifted uncomfortable, but he answered me.
“You are right, but thanks to that demigod that got us all an amnesty I got back in the service of Zeus. And my father also saw why I switched sides, so he gave me the Oneiroi to make my task in putting the world asleep and delivering dreams easier. I am now definitely on the side of the gods, and in a few years the first of my children will come to Camp Half-Blood.”
I nodded, and he looked relieved.
“I understand why you changed sides. Kronos made you an offer you could not resist. But you regret your mistake, which is good.”
The god of dreams nodded slowly.
“Athena might be right about you. Prove yourself worthy and you will become a true hero.”
I blushed and looked down, but Morpheus laughed.
“Oh, don’t worry, other heroes have done worse. They were desperate, exhausted, almost dead, sometimes already dead, but they all made it.”
He pulled a small leather bag out of his coat and said:
“Now prepare for your first prophetic dream. Just, well, lean back and relax.”
He opened the bag and poured a little bit of dust into his palm. “Just a little bit of sleep dust. There is a reason the mortals have made up a figure called the sandman.” He winked and blew the dust in my face.

The scenery melted again and reformed into a… very unimpressive looking motel room. It looked like a normal motel room with a bed, a drawer with a TV on it and two doors, one probably leading to a bathroom.
In the middle of the room on a simple chair sat a guy in a beige tuxedo, his eyes closed. He looked around 50, his brown hair with a few grey strays pulled back in a ponytail. His beard was shortly trimmed, his expression calm and peaceful. He seemed asleep, but when someone knocked on the door he flinched. He sighed and said: “Yes, Stheno, what is it?” His voice was higher than it suited a man with his looks, almost like he inhaled helium.
The door opened slowly and a lady with the worst hairdo I’ve ever seen entered. Instead of normal hair she had snakes sprouting from her head. She must be one of the Gorgons.
“Master, we were ready to go. It’s still a three-day journey to Keystone.” She said and looked concerned when the guy didn’t react.
After a few seconds he took a breath and said: “Stheno, my dear, no need to hurry. We are way ahead of our dear friends of Olympus, if I got my information right they will start tomorrow, and by that time they will not be able to catch up.” A faint smile showed on his face. “The closer we come to the statue the less Zeus’ power will become. But I guess my… sons-“ He spit out that word as if it was poisonous. “my sons will get impatient, so tell them we can leave in five minutes.”
Stheno looked excited. “I will tell them, Master.”
The man opened his eyes. They were completely white, only the black dot in the middle showed that he wasn’t blind.
“Let’s finally bring down Olympus, as Gaia wishes.”
