The bullets were flying faster and at a closer range as I hid behind the sofa, lying in wait for Chris to walk down the stairs. Shouts and laughs came from the adjacent rooms as the others faught their own mini battles but I was still aftee Chris and he was after me.
"Cordy?" He called down as his footsteps padded down the steps. "Are you in there?" His voice echoed off the framed walls and joined Lyssa's laugh coming from the kitchen.
I silently loaded my gun and got it ready to shoot, waiting for the subtle squeak of the second step to the bottom.
I heard it and leaped out from my hiding place, my gun already aimed at him and the bullets already flying.
Then something stupid happened.
My foot caught on the woven rug and my world turned sideways as I plummeted towards the carved stone tiki and taniwha sitting on a low bookshelf.
"Cordy!" Chris shouted and I was pushed aside so I lay panting and winded on the floor. At least my head wasn't through a wall.
"Chris-" I began but then I sat up to see him staring at me in shock, still by the staircase.
If he hadn't pushed me out of the way, then who had?
Notes
Tiki was the first man in maori mythology (like adam and eve) and the taniwha is a lake monster that used to creep me out so much when I was a kid. They both have heaps of kinda mental carvings of them and they're awesome!Sorry it's been a while again but I've been working *groans* so it doesn't leave too much time for writing. But here is another chapter and I hope you all have a very merry christmas! :)
