Behind the Shadows

Sapphire stands watching Cayden, as he storms towards her with an uncontained anger. It was a wonder as to why he was so angry at her. She had fought him in the big house but she had not done anything to anger him this much, at least she hadn't yet. Sapphire stands her ground and waits for him to reach her. Was he going to hit her or was he just wanting a reaction. Did he want her to cower away. Sapphire holds back her laughter. She had never cowered away in her life. Luke steps in front of Sapphire and it annoys her. Now she was tempted to summon a wave of water and splatter them both. What was it with boys and protecting girls? She was not weak. Sapphire could fight for herself, and she could do a better job than Luke. Sapphire walks out of Lukes protection.
Cayden comes face to face with Sapphire. There is something in his eyes that does not sit well with Sapphire. He looked like he was barely holding on to his sanity. His breathing is heavy and his hands twitch. Now Sapphire considers taking a step back. She doesn't, she holds her ground and shots Cayden a glare. "Let me guess. Someone stole your cookies" Sapphire chirps and gives him a mocking smile. Cayden growls like a feral animal and makes a lunge for Sapphire. Luke steps forward and shoves Cayden back. He won't back down and makes another move to get her. Sapphire barks a laugh and steps towards Cayden. Luke frowns at her as she passes him. "What exactly is your problem?" Sapphire cocks her head to the side, waiting on his reply. She watches him clench and unclench his fists. He steps forward so that his is just a few inches from her face. He leans forward and moves his head to her ear.
"I know what you are up to" He whispers "Don't get to comfortable with Luke. Once he knows your secret he will kill you" Sapphire swallow, stepping back Sapphire lifts her arm and punches Cayden in the face. He staggers back and holds his grinning face. Cayden tries to hide it, but Sapphire see's it in his eyes. He is surprised. She walks to him and grabs a scruff of his hair.
"Maybe you're right but I would risk my life to see it succeed" Sapphire whispers in his ear. Cayden hisses through his clenched teeth. He grabs her throat and slams her to the floor. He knees and looms over her. The blood from his nose drips on to her shirt. His hand remains around her throat and it adds more pressure. Sapphire panics, gasping for air she slaps at his chest and arms to get him to let go. She felt pathetic and helpless. Someone clear their throat and Cayden flicks his glare off her. He frowns and lets go of her throat. Sapphire scurries away laughing and holding her throat. She sits on the floor and leans against the railings. Luke has hold of Cayden by the collar of his shirt. He is shouting but it is muffled by the ringing in Sapphire's ears. All she can tell is that Cayden looks scared. He obeys whatever Luke has told him and walks away. Sapphire begins to realise just how powerful Luke is now. He is a leader.
"Are you okay?" Luke asks. He kneels beside Sapphire. Her breathing is back to normal and she can hear him clearly now.
"Yes. I let my guard down. That was stupid of me" She replies with a croak.
"What were you and him talking about?" Sapphire stands up and brushes off her shirt. She cringe at the blood and turns to face Luke.
"He does not trust my loyalty. He told me that he was going to turn you against me" Luke seems to believe this. He stands up and holds out his hand.
"Welcome aboard Sapphire" She lets out a relived breath of air and shook his hand. It had taken longer than planned, but Sapphire had done it, She had tricked Luke into letting her join his army. The had to be the most dangerous plan she had ever come up with. There would be no happy ending for her, that was all she knew.
