Embers
New Places
We arrived at the small cabin a few hours later, thanks to Kat's plane tickets she had bought (there were four in all, just in case). It wasn't much on the outside. It was a brick house with a small chimney off to the side of it. The window on the left of the front door was smashed and replaced with wooden boards. Kat slowly opened the door, filling the silence with the creak of the rusted hinges. Inside was a small living room with three mattresses in it and a reading lamp on the floor. The blankets were sprawled across each bed, with the light casting an eery glow. There was a kitchen off to the side of the house.
The living room was the only room in the house.
"Is this it?" I questioned, stroking my thick beard.
"It's not much, but it's close enough to camp. It's just for a few nights." She motioned to the beds. "Yours is the one on the left."
"Why are there three beds?" I asked.
"Just in case Camp Jupiter decided to attack, I'm going to bring Jack here with us." She gazed off in the distance for a moment. "Nico is off hiding in New Mexico right now, but we're going to try and meet up later. Now, I'll be back with Jack in an hour or two. You should rest... you did just come back from being dead." She grabbed a baby bottle off of the kitchen counter and headed out the door, locking it behind her.
I went over to the small bed with a wrench pattern on it, got in the covers, and shut my eyes.
